Can Boeing get back to its glory days?
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Leslie Josephs | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +17 min
Then on Jan. 5, about six minutes and 16,000 feet into a packed flight out of Portland, Oregon, a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9. The Federal Aviation Administration barred Boeing from increasing output of its Max planes and stepped up hands-on inspections at production plants. The 737 was dubbed "Baby Boeing" and went on to become the company's bestseller, helping to make Boeing the largest U.S. exporter. Pilots in those Boeing planes fought against a flight-control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, that pushed the nose of the planes downward repeatedly. Boeing has said it aims to increase rates to about 50 Max planes a month in the next few years.

Read previewIt may not feel like it, but there are a lot of cheap flights to be had this summer — and the influx of low-priced, often money-losing economy seats has airlines scrambling. "The unprofitable capacity is just not sustainable," United Airlines' chief commercial officer Andrew Nocella told investors Thursday. Low-cost airlines are bearing the brunt of the painDelta CEO Ed Bastian also questioned the long-term financial viability of the business strategy of low-cost carriers during the airline's earnings call last week. Delta CEO Ed Bastian, pictured onstage at CES in 2019, questioned the long-term viability of money-losing low-cost airlines. In addition, Alaska Airlines announced this week that it's retrofitting its Boeing 737 fleet to add 1.3 million first-class and premium economy seats annually.

The Justice Department has sued Southwest Key Programs, the nation’s largest operator of shelters for unaccompanied migrant children, accusing its employees of repeatedly subjecting minors in its care to sexual abuse and harassment. Southwest Key has worked with the federal government for more than two decades, playing a critical role in the shelter system. It has been awarded nearly $6 billion in federal funds since 2007, operating 29 shelters in Texas, Arizona and California that can house more than 6,300 children. They receive meals and educational opportunities in such shelters until they can be placed with a parent, relative or other guardian. Southwest Key documented dozens of incidents of abuse reported by children, but according to prosecutors, employees did not report abuse they had observed or knew of, or violations of policies designed to protect minors.

United Airlines ' second-quarter profit rose more than 20% from last year as strong demand for international travel boosted the carrier's results, but its third-quarter forecast came in shy of estimates as an oversupply of flights weighs on fares. United and Delta Air Lines , which also disappointed with its third-quarter guidance, have still been standouts in the U.S. airline industry. The company expanded domestic flying by more than 5% in the second quarter over last year, and unit revenues fell more than 1% over last year. On Tuesday, Spirit Airlines cut its second-quarter forecast, citing weaker-than-expected revenue for fees like seating or luggage. Southwest Airlines and American Airlines , which report results on July 25, previously reduced their second-quarter estimates.

Senator J.D. Portraying himself as a child of Appalachia with a deep appreciation for the “grit in the American heartland,” Mr. Vance effectively framed his nomination as one for Mr. Trump’s white, working-class political base. He said he would be guided by the lessons learned from “Mamaw,” his deeply religious, foul-mouthed grandmother who raised him, and the memories of the friends and acquaintances from his old neighborhood who died of drug overdoses. “I pledge to every American, no matter your party, I will give everything I have,” Mr. Vance said. “To serve you and to make this country a place where every dream you have for yourself, your family and your country will be possible once again.”

CNN —Sixteen people were killed after a fire broke out at a shopping mall in southwest China on Wednesday, according to Chinese state media. Dramatic images showed a huge column of black smoke billowing from the 14-story building in the city of Zigong, Sichuan province. Rescuers work at the site of the fire in China's Zigong city on July 17, 2024. Such incidents are not uncommon in China, where enforcement of safety standards is often lax. In January, a fire at a mixed-use building in southeast China killed at least 39 people just days after another blaze at a boarding school in central Henan province killed 13 children.

What to Expect as a Punishing Heat Wave Shifts East

A heat wave that broke dozens of temperature records across the American Southwest will shift to more of the country this weekend, with heat peaking in the Northeast early next week. Some East Coast cities, including Baltimore and Washington, D.C., will experience temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. That won’t necessarily break records, as Las Vegas and many other Western cities did last week. “What we want people to be prepared for is the hot daytime temperatures, and the temperatures that don’t really cool off that much at night,” said Richard Bann, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. That can be especially stressful for people who don’t have a good way to keep cool or aren’t staying hydrated, he said.

Brands are "shifting from one-time, short-term partnerships to long-term, recurring partnerships," said Olivia McNaughten, senior director of product marketing and partnerships at the influencer firm Grin. Influencer marketing remains a bright spot in the creator industry, whereas companies in other categories have struggled to grow. Influencer marketing, by contrast, is humming along, with billions of dollars expected to pour into the category this year. Influencer marketing may also be outperforming other creator-economy businesses because it taps into an existing market rather than inventing something new. Goldman Sachs analysts forecasted in April 2023 that influencer marketing and creator advertising would help grow the creator economy to a $480 billion industry by 2027.
