Scientists said they had expected the sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico to wane eventually — but not so fast, or by so much. “That is a surprise,” said Chuanmin Hu, a professor of oceanography at the University of South Florida, noting that there was still “a lot of sargassum” in the Tropical Atlantic. “The good news is the sargassum season for Florida is very likely over for this year. Last month, the amount of sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico dropped by a staggering 75 percent, Dr. Hu and colleagues at the University of South Florida Optical Oceanography Lab noted in a bulletin published last week.

Some reporters were granted access to the courtroom through a lottery system. No cell phones or laptops were allowed in the courthouse, leaving us to rely on an old-school journalism approach of pay phones and notepads. Here I was, reporting what happened inside a room that only about 100 people would witness. Journalists with the closest access to the Trump arraignment were inside the courtroom, within feet of the former president. The judge, Aileen M. Cannon, who Mr. Trump appointed to the bench in 2020, is scheduled — at least for now — to preside over the former president’s first appearance in Federal District Court in Miami on Tuesday, the people said. But it was not clear whether Judge Cannon would remain assigned for the entirety of Mr. Trump’s case. Judge Cannon’s involvement was earlier reported by ABC News. The chances that Judge Cannon would randomly receive the assignment were low. There are 15 active Federal District Court judges in South Florida, along with 11 on senior status who are still assigned to hear cases but at a reduced workload.

Special counsel Jack Smith is set to deliver an on-camera statement following the public release of the federal indictment against former President Donald Trump. Smith has been leading the Department of Justice investigation into the transfer of classified documents to Trump's home Mar-a-Lago. Trump announced Thursday that he had been indicted in the criminal probe into his handling of classified records after leaving the presidency. The case in federal court in South Florida was under seal until about 1:40 p.m. Earlier Friday, two of his lawyers announced they would no longer represent him in the criminal case, or as part of another federal criminal investigation related to the events surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
