Pricing is really weird lately
  + stars: | 2024-07-10 | by ( Jordan Parker Erb | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +7 min
In today's big story, we're looking at why pricing is so weird these days . More recently, Walmart introduced digital price tags, which some people said could be used for variable pricing. The constantly changing costs have consumers feeling a sense of price fatigue, Emily writes. Emily writes that most economists agree that government-mandated price-fixing isn't the way to go about it. So, as Emily writes, you can't fault anyone for feeling a certain sense of doom and gloom about the economy.

A potter’s field burial site on Hart Island was receiving 24 bodies each day, as many as the city typically used to bury there in a week. Last month in Karachi, Pakistan, temperatures approached 120 degrees Fahrenheit and hospitals reportedly treated thousands for heatstroke. The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. A 2006 bill that would have defined illegal lockouts for all Illinois residents was defeated.

For close to a century, putting your savings into a federally insured bank has been a sure thing: If the institution fails, up to $250,000 of your money will be protected. The promise of bank insurance — a tenet of U.S. consumer protection since the Great Depression — is now being tested by a crisis swirling around online-only lenders with hundreds of millions of dollars of deposits between them. Most depositors have little clue where their money has gone, and whether they will get any of it back. If some industry experts are right, they could help solve a global labor shortage. Companies like Tesla, Amazon , Microsoft and Nvidia have plowed billions of dollars into what are known as "humanoid" robots. The market for humanoids is set to balloon to $38 billion in the next 20 years, according to an analysis by Goldman Sachs. The firm predicts these robots will be the next "must-have" device, not unlike smartphones or EVs. Goldman also say humanoids may be "vital for manufacturing and dangerous work, but they would also help with elderly care and fill in for labor shortages in factories."
