MOSCOW — A U.S. citizen who was spirited out of eastern Ukraine by Russian special forces after helping the Kremlin target Ukrainian troops said in Moscow on Saturday he had asked for Russian citizenship. He said he was under no duress, wanted to receive Russian citizenship and predicted Russia would win the war in Ukraine. Martindale, who said he had worked as a missionary, said he entered Ukraine from Poland in early 2022, just days before President Vladimir Putin ordered thousands of troops into Ukraine. Martindale said that while in Ukraine, he had established contact with pro-Russian forces via Telegram and passed them information from Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. Russian forces had even delivered a telephone to him with a drone, the Izvestia newspaper reported.

BOSTON — Firefighters in Massachusetts are continuing to battle stubborn brush fires across the state with officials urging residents to take precautions to help avoid sparking new blazes. In Massachusetts, an average of 15 wildland fires are reported each October. On Saturday, a Boston man was arrested in connection to a brush fire in Milford, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Boston. More than a quarter of this year’s brush and wildland fires took place in October, according to Chief Fire Warden David Celino of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. “Any outdoor fire will grow quickly, become difficult to control, and require numerous firefighting resources.”State Fire Marshal Jon Davine said about 45% of Massachusetts homes are in or near wooded areas at risk for brush and wildland fires.

Israel has officially notified the United Nations that it was cancelling the agreement that regulated its relations with the main U.N. relief organization for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) since 1967, the country’s foreign ministry said on Monday. The legislation does not directly outlaw UNRWA’s operations in the West Bank and Gaza, both considered by international law to be outside the state of Israel but under Israeli occupation. The Israeli foreign ministry said activity by other international organizations would be expanded and “preparations will be made to end the connection with UNRWA and to boost alternatives to UNRWA.”

CNN —An American-Iranian journalist who once worked for a US-funded broadcaster is believed to have been detained in Iran, according to his former employer and multiple press freedom groups. Iran has not acknowledged detaining Valizadeh and the Iranian mission to the United Nations has declined to comment on his situation. CNN —More severe weather is expected in the South and the Southern Plains Monday, including in Oklahoma, where residents are surveying the destruction from tornado-spawning storms that injured at least 11 people and leveled homes over the weekend. Tornado sirens rang out Monday morning in Oklahoma City, where residents are still surrounded by the destruction and debris caused by the weekend’s severe storms, after the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. There were no confirmed tornadoes or reports of damage from Monday morning’s storms. A level 2 of 5 threat of severe thunderstorms spans from central and eastern Texas to the Illinois-Missouri border – including Dallas, threatening damaging wind gusts, large hail and tornadoes, according to the SPC. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has opened an administrative review as videos circulating online show violent interactions between deputies and fans at this weekend's University of Florida and University of Georgia rivalry football game. One video went viral after being posted by Tate Moore, a Barstool Sports employee, where two game spectators appeared to be repeatedly punched by deputies. As they speak, the camera pans to a deputy appearing to hold a stun gun a few feet away. It then sounds as if the stun gun was deployed and the man pulls the cords to the gun off him and stands up yelling. "I’m aware of several disturbing videos circulating from yesterday’s game," Deegan said.

At least five people were injured after heavy rain and tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma Saturday night leading into Sunday morning. Video shows that Newcastle Elementary School in the Oklahoma City metro area sustained major damage, including tiling that fell off of the building's facade. KFORElsewhere in Oklahoma City, mounds of debris, including wood and sheetrock, could be seen strewn about around a community. It's not clear whether they were injured as a result of the tornadoes or the heavy rainfall, but the fire department said they responded to several vehicles that had been flooded. Most of Oklahoma remains under flood watch with a threat of heavy rainfall and over 51,000 utility customers do not have power as of 10:30 a.m.

Chappell Roan went from the “Pink Pony Club” to the country club on “Saturday Night Live,” surprising fans by going country in both look and sound for her second number of the show, the premiere of a brand new song, “The Giver,” that marries C&W with LGBTQ. “I get the job done,” Roan sang in the refrain of the new song, which shares a theme with “Femininomenon” in making the argument that pleasing a woman is sometimes (or always?) “All you country boys saying you know how to threat a woman right,” Roan said during a spoken word aside in the song — “Well, only a woman knows how to treat a woman right. Roan’s new song is not the first lesbian country song, of course. Now, the big question: Will Roan be invited to get the job done with a Grand Ole Opry appearance?
