Ukraine has started using its US-donated ATACMS missiles to great effect. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe long-range ATACMS missiles that Ukraine got from the US are putting Russia on the back foot, rendering one of its tactics less effective, an expert told Insider. But now Ukraine can hit equipment that is spread further apart thanks to the ATACMS cluster munitions. Ukraine can hit "targets where you need to hit a wide range of targets in one location," said Bailey. Ukraine said at it expended at least four missiles in the ATACMS strike [which took out far more than four targets?].

Investors were also excited by Tuesday's approval of an additional 1 trillion yuan ($136.76 billion) of sovereign bond issuance. Drawing investors back into China's $10.5 trillion stock market, particularly the foreign buyers that have fled in droves this year, would stem further slides in a market which fell to its lowest since 2019 earlier this week. "China's central government is endorsing the stock market," said Qi Wang, chief investment officer of UOB Kay Hian's wealth management division in Hong Kong. Huijin last bought ETFs during the 2015 stock market crash, and during the money market liquidity crunch in 2013. Still, China's stock markets have to overcome earlier heavy selling from foreigners, burnt by Xi's previous crackdowns on internet companies and other sectors, and its earlier stringent zero-COVID policy.

Russia launched its first major offensive in months on the village of Avdiivka — but it's not going well. Western observers have remarked on large Russian losses around Avdiivka, where Russia has failed to make significant advances despite committing large numbers of troops and vehicles. AdvertisementAdvertisementBailey pointed to Russia's efforts in Vuhledar, another town nearby, where Russian attacks ended in defeat and huge tank losses earlier this year. Russia launched its assault on Avdiivka, in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, on October 10, Ukraine said. Ukrainian units have shared footage of intense fighting and destroyed Russian vehicles.

"Despite inflicting significant losses on Russian armed forces, Ukraine's four-and-a-half-month-old counteroffensive has not achieved major territorial gains nor managed to slice through Russia's 'land bridge' to Crimea," he added. "The hope is that they're far enough through the Russian defensive lines now ... to make some rapid progress. Russian forces had months to prepare layers of defenses including extensive networks of trenches; anti-tank obstacles such as ditches and "dragon's teeth"; and minefields. Russian forces are also receiving support from artillery, attack helicopters and other aircraft, again impeding Ukraine's forces. Minefields, in particular, have disrupted Ukraine's offensive momentum and rate of advance, according to analysts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Bitcoin leaps to 2023 high on ETF bets

Bitcoin rose more than 6% to $35,198, its highest since May 2022. It had surged 10% on Monday in its best session for almost a year and its price has doubled in 2023. Crypto-linked shares such as Coinbase Global (COIN.O) or bitcoin owner MicroStrategy (MSTR.O) rose in after-hours trade. An exchange-traded fund (ETF) owning bitcoin on behalf of fund investors is seen as a driver of demand because it would allow anyone reluctant to trade crypto markets a means of buying exposure to bitcoin through the stockmarket. So the ETF would make a large audience and increase liquidity," said Steen Jakobsen, CIO at Saxo.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have continued to target Israel with deadly rockets from hidden launch sites inside Gaza. Palestinian rockets have malfunctioned in the past and one estimate says 15 percent of rockets launched by Gazan militant groups fail. Hamas immediately blamed an Israeli airstrike, while the Israel Defense Forces soon denied any responsibility and placed the blame on a malfunctioning Palestinian rocket. Numerous media outlets have shown the video footage and several have cited it as evidence that a Palestinian rocket hit the hospital. It was launched from Israel, not Gaza, and appears to have exploded above the Israeli-Gaza border, at least two miles away from the hospital.

Dollar dips ahead of key US data, bitcoin soars

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsTOKYO, Oct 24 (Reuters) - The dollar softened against a basket of currencies on Tuesday, mirroring a dip in Treasuries yields as investors awaited key U.S. economic data before the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting next week. The dollar index last sat around 105.57, having lost over 0.5% in the previous session as U.S. Treasury yields tumbled. Bitcoin returned the market spotlight with the virtual currency soaring on speculation that the United States could soon approve a bitcoin exchange-traded fund. The PMI data could set the market expectations ahead of the GDP report, said Matt Simpson, senior market analyst at City Index. Traders see the 150 threshold as a possible line-in-the-sand for Japanese authorities to intervene in the currency market.

14 Utah blew an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter before rallying for a thrilling 34-32 victory over No. USC kicked a field goal with 3:03 to play, and its maligned defense stopped Utah at midfield. After Utah quickly got to midfield with a personal foul and targeting penalty on USC lineman Bear Alexander, Barnes darted through the USC defense on his rambling run. Vaki caught a 53-yard touchdown pass on the Utes' third play from scrimmage, roaring away from USC's defense in space. Utah does more with less than just about any elite program, and a third straight Pac-12 title is still in play.
