How to save San Francisco
  + stars: | 2023-07-16 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +18 min
But treating San Francisco as some sort of outlier, a sui generis example of urban decay, is wrong, too. After I washed out back there I washed up on the Embarcadero, a typical San Francisco story. Because here's my one crazy trick to fix San Francisco: homes. Paul Chinn/The San Francisco Chronicle via Getty ImagesThis is just a matter of good old-fashioned supply and demand. To revive the city, San Francisco needs to get back to its freak-flag-flying roots.

The couple used Facebook Marketplace to buy most of the furniture and they only spent $1,900. We did most of the work ourselves and only did what was necessaryWe decided to renovate the AirBnB space mostly on our own and with friends to save labor costs. We found a new toilet and pedestal sink on Facebook Marketplace and just had to pay the plumber for installation. In order to keep the costs low, we sourced most of the items from Facebook Marketplace. You can do it without spending too much money, just get creative, and source decor from second-hand shops or Facebook Marketplace.

CNN —Your Chipotle guacamole may soon be prepared by a robot. Meet “Autocado,” a Chipotle robot designed to perform the more tedious tasks of creating the chain’s guacamole, including cutting, coring and peeling avocados. But Chipotle (CMG) said this “collaborative robot” will not eliminate jobs, but, instead, employees will work with the robot to speed up guacamole production. For its design, Chipotle partnered with Vebu Labs, a robotics startup in California, to analyze the preparation process at various Chipotle restaurants and identify the most time-consuming tasks for employees. And Chipotle is already testing “Chippy,” a robotic kitchen assistant that uses artificial intelligence to make tortilla chips to dip in Autocado’s guacamole.

ANCASH, Peru, July 12 (Reuters) - Archaeologists working in Peru have uncovered a 3,000-year-old sealed corridor dubbed "the condor's passageway" that likely leads to other chambers inside what was once a massive temple complex pertaining to the ancient Chavin culture. Located around 190 miles (306 km) northeast of Lima, the Chavin de Huantar archeological site is among the culture's most important centers, thriving from around 1,500-550 B.C. The temple complex features terraces as well as a network of passageways, which have only recently been discovered. Rick, a Stanford University archeologist, has said much of the temple complex remains to be excavated. The United Nations' educational, scientific and cultural arm UNESCO declared Chavin de Huantar a world heritage site in 1985.

"Superfakes" are gaining popularity as high-quality designer knockoffs. Designer brands have been combatting knockoffs for decades, but a rising category of "superfakes" can trick the most experienced experts. Here's how superfakes became so difficult to tell apart from the real thing. However, any product that intentionally replicates a brand's product, using its logo, name, or intellectual property is considered a knockoff. Both designer brands and third-party marketplaces have invested millions in combating counterfeits, but the issue is so widespread that it's impossible to stop them all.

After making an arrest, the Inmate Reception Center is the first place police take someone before they are assigned to another county jail. While policymakers in other jurisdictions have successfully implemented decarceration strategies to limit jail populations, Los Angeles County is home to the largest jail system in the United States. Six years ago, Mr. Salaam moved to Georgia; Harlem had become so expensive. He sees the lack of affordable housing as the area’s chief concern, and he is committed to working with developers to create more. Mr. Salaam’s ascent suggests the political appeal of lived experience over the attraction of outlier ideologies that have been cultivated at a privileged distance. Despite what he suffered at the hands of a warped system, Mr. Salaam maintains a position on policing that is comparatively moderate, calling for better and more sensitive policing, not a world without it. One of his political supporters is a former corrections officer who first encountered Mr. Salaam in a Lower Manhattan courthouse in the early stages of his long ordeal.

But that made little difference to Colosseum authorities who said that it didn’t change the fact that the act was vandalism. Mr. Dimitrov was eventually identified by Italian military police officers who crosschecked the two lovers’ names with registered guests in Rome and found they had stayed in an Airbnb rental in the Cinecittà neighborhood. Roberto Martina, the police commander who oversaw the operation, said they tracked Mr. Dimitrov to England, where he and his girlfriend, who is not under investigation, live. Three years ago, a spate of incidents prompted lawmakers to stiffen penalties for vandalizing Italy’s venerable cultural heritage. Mr. Tirelli said he was hoping for a plea bargain that will allow his client to pay a fine but serve no jail time.

The answer is: The last battle of America’s war of independence was fought on this continent. DuVal and others say two key protagonists of the Revolutionary War – Britain and France – actually fought the final battle of the conflict in Cuddalore, India, in June of 1783. Britain and, to a lesser extent, France were well established with colonies in India when the American Revolution began and had already brought their hostilities from Europe to the subcontinent, according to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. “They brought news that six months before in Paris, the British, French and the Americans – the Dutch were a little later – signed the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution,” he says. “Cuddalore, India, was indeed the last battle of the American Revolution.”

On a recent morning in this quiet village outside Amsterdam, an older woman stocked shelves inside the local supermarket. In the plaza just outside the store, a group of men sat around a table, chatting the hours away. Over in the town square, a woman in a hijab sipped coffee outside the cafe. Many of the people here don’t realize that they are living in the world’s first so-called “dementia village,” and it can be difficult for visitors to tell the difference between the residents and the plain-clothed staff. “To be honest, at that moment I had made my choice already.”

The rise of political nepo babies
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( Chris Dalla Riva | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
Second, if you are a nepo baby in your first term, you will continue to be counted as a nepo baby in each subsequent term. Thus, Pelosi has been counted as a nepo baby each year since she was first elected in 1987. It's possible that this trend is the result of the Democratic party electing more nepo baby incumbents like Pelosi. Thus, it's not surprising that the Democratic Party does not just have more incumbent nepo babies but also more first-time nepo babies. On top of that, we continue to see that independent of party the Senate elects more nepo babies than the House.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Graduates of Harvard and other Ivy League schools earn significantly more than most college graduates –— the credential opens doors. Maybe the best confirmation of that is that eight out of the nine Supreme Court justices went to law school at either Harvard or its Ivy rival, Yale. “The court’s decision Thursday is consistent with its view that race-based preferences should and would have a limited shelf life. And the Supreme Court has just guaranteed that this will be the case for many years to come.”“The court made the right decision,” wrote Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University.

To combat the growing problem, the FBI has begun taking formal measures to get a comprehensive picture of the problem on a national level. Ashley Hamilton was living paycheck-to-paycheck when she went to a local real estate conference. I love real estate because the barrier to entry is so low. Hamilton first learned about real estate in 2009, when she attended a free seminar in Detroit. Still, two concepts resonated with her that she says helped her go from living paycheck-to-paycheck to building a 35-unit real estate portfolio that has helped her achieve financial independence. Another trick that helped Hamilton think long-term was to always have a specific timeline for her goals.

The DeSantis plan, rolled out at a press conference at the Texas border Monday, lays out steps that should satisfy most Republican border hawks. His immigration plan showcases a candidate interested in effective policymaking beyond pure sloganeering, even if some major questions surround a few key details. The former President noted the similarities — “His plan is my plan,” Trump told Semafor and ABC News on Tuesday. Then, there are the ideas in DeSantis’ plan that have a harder time standing up to scrutiny. Similarly, cutting federal funding to non-governmental organizations that provide aid to those who cross the southern border would be less effective than it sounds.

“Flamin’ Hot” says “no,” that only through the gospel of ganas may we enter the kingdom of heaven. But, oh, how “Flamin’ Hot” tries. “Flamin’ Hot” isn’t even effective propaganda. There can be a successful Latino, the movie says, but only one; the people who serve him must also be Latino. A movie can depart from the strict truth and capture a broader, deeper truth, so I hoped “Flamin’ Hot” would surprise me.

Copper prices have jumped as much as 12% from their May 25 low, and that could signal green shoots for the economy. Copper prices have long been viewed as a leading economic indicator because it is utilized in various sectors of the economy. Essentially, rising copper prices could signal increased demand and therefore increased economic activity, and vice versa for when copper prices fall. But rising copper prices aren't always driven by an increase in demand for the commodity, and could instead be impacted by other factors. Sosnick also said that recent interest rate cuts in China could be impacting copper prices more so than broad economic strength "since other key commodities like oil are hardly signaling economic strength."
