Nov 21 (Reuters) - At least one person has been killed and multiple others were believed to be missing in a major landslide along the principal roadway serving an island community in Southeast Alaska, state officials said on Tuesday. "Multiple individuals are believed to have been within the slide area when the landslide occurred and are believed to be missing," the statement said. Alaska state police assumed command of the search-and-rescue effort, but ground-level search operations were suspended while geologists assessed the risk of additional landslide activity in the area, the public safety agency said. Wrangell is linked to the mainland and other towns in Southeast Alaska by ferry and airplane. Its principal road is the Zimovia Highway, which runs along the west side of the island for 14 miles.

CNN —At least one person was found dead and multiple others are believed to be missing after a large landslide covered a highway near a remote community in southeast Alaska, the state’s Department of Public Safety said in a news release Tuesday. The landslide was reported Monday around 9 p.m. local time on the Zimovia Highway near Wrangell, and a preliminary survey by emergency responders determined it had walloped three single-family residences in its path. Mike Dunleavy has issued a disaster declaration in Wrangell after deadly landslide, his office posted on social media. Alaska’s Department of Public Safety urges people not to enter the slide area as it has been active throughout the night and additional landslides are possible. The state's biggest utility, PG&E, serves more than 16 million people across 70,000 square miles in Northern and Central California. The APD set the 2023 revenue requirement at $13.52 billion, reflecting an 11% increase from 2022. According to the regulator, customers would see an increase of $32.62 on their bills, compared with PG&E's request of $38.73. One of the main wildfire mitigation efforts PG&E has been undertaking is undergrounding, or burying power lines. This lessens the need for public safety power shutoffs — a last resort during dry, windy conditions to reduce the risk of sparking a wildfire.

Last week, Cruise announced it would recall 950 robotaxis after a pedestrian collision. In October, the California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise's deployment and testing permits for its autonomous vehicles, effective immediately. "When there is an unreasonable risk to public safety, the DMV can immediately suspend or revoke permits," the California DMV said in a statement at the time. Last Thursday, Cruise announced a round of contractor layoffs.
