DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union says its two-week strike against Detroit automakers will spread to 7,000 more workers at a Ford plant in Chicago and a General Motors assembly factory near Lansing, Michigan. Union President Shawn Fain told workers on a video appearance Friday that negotiations haven’t broken down but Ford and GM have refused to make meaningful progress. The GM plant in Delta Township, near Lansing, makes large crossover SUVs such as the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. The Chicago Ford plant makes the Ford Explorer and Explorer Police Interceptors, as well as the Lincoln Aviator SUV. New York CNN —Starbucks violated federal labor law when it increased wages and offered new perks and benefits only to non-union employees, a National Labor Relations Board judge found Thursday. The decision is the latest in a series of NLRB rulings finding that Starbucks has violated labor law in its efforts to stop unions from forming in its coffee shops. Last year, Starbucks announced that it would raise wages for non-union employees, and offer them other new benefits. Starbucks should also post a notice in its cafes telling workers that the NLRB found Starbucks had violated federal labor law, and detailing employee rights, she said. Public companies in the S&P 500 stock index had an average pension "funded ratio" of 102% as of Sept. 21, according to data tracked by financial services firm Aon. That's the highest level since at least the end of 2011, when the ratio was around 78%. A funded ratio is one way to gauge pension health. Benefiting from the highest interest rates since 2008, pension funds are better funded to meet future payouts than they have been in years. Because insurers hold a lot less government debt than pension funds, favouring higher-return assets such as corporate debt, they are expected to sell some of the gilts they receive. DETROIT – Major automakers are calling into question the United Auto Workers' motives in launching targeted strikes in light of leaked messages by a union director calling to "keep them wounded for months." Ford communications chief Mark Truby said in a statement Friday the leaked messages are "disappointing, to say the least, given what is at stake for our employees, the companies and this region." In response to The Detroit News, Furman would not confirm writing the messages but according to the paper, called them "private messages" that "you shouldn't have." The leaked messages come as Fain on Friday announced additional plants the union plans to strike as part of its "stand-up strikes," a nod to historic "sit-down" strikes by the UAW in the 1930s.

"I believe that an Alberta pension plan would be fairer," Premier Danielle Smith told a news conference on Thursday. However, he noted the pension respects the right of Albertans to consider withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan. Albertans will have until spring 2024 to submit views on a provincial pension plan to a panel, which will submit a report to the Albertan government. Former Premier Jason Kenney announced in June 2020 that his government would study a recommendation from a panel to replace the CPP with a provincial plan. Any province has the right to withdraw under the Canada Pension Plan Act but written notice is required, enabling legislation has to be passed and the value of assets to be transferred must be negotiated.
