The latestElon Musk is getting a crash course in the world of President-elect Donald Trump. Trump worked to fill out his cabinet, after picking Florida’s Pam Bondi to replace Matt Gaetz as his nominee for attorney general. The Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer is staying strategically silent over Trump’s cabinet picks. “Why get in the middle of a food fight?” one Democrat said. When gravity exerted its pull on that now-former congressman, Matt Gaetz, he reached for a tried-and-true excuse that has softened the landing of many nominees who failed before him, albeit for less shocking reasons.

The words “private equity” are almost poetic in their power to obfuscate in such a way that most people simply tune out when they hear them. But there’s a reason workers tend to have a negative association with private equity. Per Bloomberg, Apollo “built its name as the scrappiest private equity and distressed-debt investor on Wall Street by buying businesses and loading them up with debt that offered creditors meager protections in the face of default.”Historically, private equity deals were largely handled by big banks. Private equity firms now hold controlling stakes across an array of industries, including supermarkets, housing, health care, fashion, restaurants and vet clinics. And other efforts to force more transparency and accountability in private equity have similarly faced opposition.

An aerial view of Phillips 66 oil refinery is seen in Linden, New Jersey, United States on March 8, 2022. Oil prices rose on Friday after Russia said it had fired a ballistic missile at Ukraine and warned of a broadening conflict, raising the prospect of tightening crude supplies. Russia is among the world's top crude oil producing countries, even with output declines following import bans tied to its invasion of Ukraine and supply curbs by producer group OPEC+. Russia this month said it produced about 9 million barrels of oil a day. Ukraine has used drones to target Russian oil infrastructure, including in June, when it used long-range attack drones to strike four Russian refineries.

The circumstances that led to Gabbard’s inclusion on Quiet Skies may be entirely benign, these sources said. Under normal circumstances, one official said, Gabbard would be forced to explain the underlying foreign travel or contacts in question during her background check. Security officials from multiple agencies told CNN that the program is known inside the government for having far laxer standards for inclusion. “TSA’s Quiet Skies program is a risk-based, automated approach to transportation security, to include identifying potential risks and applying enhanced security measures.”The statement continued: “TSA’s Quiet Skies program is not a terrorist watchlist.

President Trump is for you” — Democrats are now debating how much the issue of trans rights hurt them and how fast they should retreat from it. The party’s decision to focus on the issues that matter to most voters, especially reproductive rights, and set trans rights aside is based on a misconception. The two issues can’t be separated, because trans rights don’t just resemble reproductive rights; trans rights are reproductive rights. But opponents of trans rights argue that there is an area in which the consequences can be nothing short of catastrophic, and that area is reproduction. Both of them have repeatedly expressed fear that the treatment they received as teenagers could have rendered them infertile.

While Anthropic and OpenAI continue to raise significant sums, some smaller companies have essentially been folded into Google and Microsoft. U.S. regulators are also scrutinizing the multibillion-dollar investments that Microsoft, Amazon and Google are putting into A.I. But the deals are seen as allowing the big companies to form deep ties with their smaller rivals while avoiding most government scrutiny. Anthropic has tried to position itself as one of the more responsible actors in the field of A.I.
