This week's initial College Football Playoff rankings, where Michigan was ranked third, stoked coaches’ outrage over the inaction. The call with coaches Wednesday was also regularly scheduled, but it was dominated by talk of the current allegations against Michigan. Michigan and the Big Ten have acknowledged the NCAA is investigating the Wolverines football program. Multiple Big Ten schools have found tickets purchased in Stalions' name to their games over the last three seasons. A person with knowledge of the situation told AP tickets to the last two Southeastern Conference championship games were also purchased in Stalions' name.

Doctors across the country say it’s rare that migrants receive medical screenings or anything beyond care for medical emergencies when they arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border, and there’s no overarching national system to track the care, either. You have these little islands of shelter,” said Deliana Garcia, of the nonprofit Migrant Clinicians Network, which supported more than 1,000 migrants in need of medical care in the first 10 months of this year. The challenges of careMigrants face a lack of access to steady medical care in the U.S., as well as healthy food and stable housing. Some avoid asking for help entirely out of fear of a large bill or longstanding distrust of the medical system. The shelter system in Massachusetts is so full that the governor brought in the National Guard in August to assist.

But declines in small-cap stocks suggest that worries about the US economy’s health still linger on Wall Street. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks the performance of US small-cap stocks, last Friday touched its lowest level since November 2020 after turning negative for the year earlier in October. Small-cap stocks tend to be an indicator of economic strength, because they generate most of their revenue domestically. Still, Mahajan says that small-cap stocks could be set up for a rally, especially if the economy sees renewed growth next year. Research suggests each geriatrician should care for no more than 700 patients; the current ratio of providers to older patients is 1 to 10,000. In some respects, geriatrics has been remarkably successful in disseminating principles and practices meant to improve the care of older adults. Under this model, older adults with acute but non-life-threatening illnesses get care at home, managed closely by nurses and doctors. In July 2019, the American College of Surgeons created a program with 32 standards designed to improve the care of older adults. Top law firms call out antisemitism on college campuses

New York CNN —Some of the nation’s most powerful law firms are warning America’s elite universities to crack down on antisemitism on campus – or the schools and their students will face real consequences. “Over the last several weeks, we have been alarmed at reports of anti-Semitic harassment, vandalism and assaults on college campuses, including rallies calling for the death of Jews and the elimination of the State of Israel,” more than two dozen law firms wrote in a letter obtained by CNN. The letter campaign was spearheaded by Joe Shenker, senior chair of Sullivan & Cromwell, according to the New York-based law firm. “One would hope that by the twenty-first century, antisemitism would have been relegated to the dustbin of history,” Columbia University leaders said in a statement. Last month, a Columbia student hanging up posters on campus in support of Israel was assaulted.

New York CNN —University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill, facing a backlash from donors calling for her to resign, launched a new effort on Wednesday to fight antisemitism at the Ivy League school. “This is an incredibly challenging moment in the world, and we are feeling its reverberations on our campus,” Magill wrote in a letter to the Penn community on Wednesday. “The engagement of Jewish faculty, students, staff and alumni has been an important part of the success of Penn as a leading University,” Magill said. Magill condemned antisemitism broadly before that festival and noted that some speakers had a history of making antisemitic remarks. Organizers of the three-day-long Palestine Writes festival denied that it embraced antisemitism, according to UPenn student newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian.

A jury in Illinois ordered Chicago-based Conagra Brands to pay $7.1 million to a Pennsylvania woman who was badly burned when a can of cooking spray caught fire at her workplace kitchen. The woman, Tammy Reese, was working in a kitchen at Hub City Club in Shippensburg, Penn., in May 2017 and using Pam cooking spray when it suddenly “exploded into a fireball, causing burns,” according to the complaint filed in 2019. Ms. Reese suffered second-degree burns on her head, face, hands and arms and spent weeks getting burn care, Ms. Reese’s lawyer, J. Craig Smith, said. The jury ruled in favor of Ms. Reese on counts that included liability, design defect, failure to warn, and negligence and willful and wanton conduct, according to documents filed in Cook County Circuit Court on Monday.

Big donors to universities have long expected special treatment, like preference for their children’s applications. Universities helped create the expectation that donations come with influence. Like most nonprofits, U.S. universities foster relationships with some donors by offering them seats on the board of the trustees. The job comes with real power: Trustees vote on decisions like tenure and the selection of the university president. The question is how far the influence of individual donors should extend.
