The reality, however, was much more mundane: a botched software update from the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. "In this case, it was a content update," said Nick Hyatt, director of threat intelligence at security firm Blackpoint Cyber. And because CrowdStrike has such a broad base of customers, it was the content update felt around the world. In this case, the content update was tied to the CrowdStrike Falcon monitoring software. As the 2024 market rally broadens out, some small-cap stocks are poised to do better than others. But with interest rate cuts on the horizon, the prospects for small-cap stocks have improved in recent weeks. The Russell 2000 small-cap index has already risen more than 6% in July alone. Against that backdrop, CNBC Pro screened for the small-cap stocks that could be poised for a boost. "We believe near-term expectations are reasonable, and given the stock's negative sentiment and recent market volatility, we decided to move to the sidelines," wrote analyst Chris O'Cull.

There have been no celebrations of Jan. 6 rioters and no talk of election “mules” smuggling ballots. There, in so-called media row, the hive of right-wing activists galvanized by former President Donald J. Trump’s lies about the 2020 election was buzzing. Mike Lindell, the pillow company founder who is one of the most prominent promoters of conspiracy theories about election fraud, gave interviews about rigged voting machines. Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s leading lawyer in the effort to subvert the 2020 election, held court nearby. And, with polls showing a widening lead for Mr. Trump, some in the denial movement are signaling how they might legitimize a victory in a system they’ve decried for years.

The Democratic National Committee announced on Tuesday that it would pour $15 million into the party’s ground game in seven battleground states, an early cash infusion into the nuts and bolts of campaigning as Republicans hold their national convention in Milwaukee. The money, which will go directly to the Democrats’ state parties, will be used to open more field offices, expand data collection efforts and hire staff members to cover more terrain in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. “This is the largest-ever investment made to battleground state parties at this point in time,” Jaime Harrison, the chair of the D.N.C., said in a statement. “And we continue to build our state-by-state war chests in preparation to re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris in November.”The $15 million summer expenditure amounts to a bet by Democrats that a sophisticated and sprawling ground game in battleground states can overcome the turmoil engulfing President Biden’s campaign, after weeks in which key elected Democrats and donors have defected from him and called for him to step aside over concerns about his age and acuity.

Swatch Group reported a steep fall in first half sales and earnings on Monday as the world's biggest watchmaker struggled with weaker demand in China. The sales figure missed the 3.75 billion francs forecast by analysts in a consensus gathered by Visible Alpha. Net profit tumbled to 147 million francs from 498 million francs, it added. Sales during the first half of the year were hurt by a negative currency impact of 145 million francs, it noted. Sales figures outside of China in local currencies were at the level of 2023, a record year, Swatch said.

Trump victory trades to swell after shooting, investors say
  + stars: | 2024-07-14 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Saturday's shooting at U.S. former President Donald Trump's election rally raises his odds of winning back the White House, and trades betting on his victory will increase this coming week, investors said on Sunday. Trump was shot in the ear during the rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday in what the authorities were treating as an assassination attempt. The first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since a 1981 assassination attempt on Republican President Ronald Reagan could upend the Nov. 5 rematch between Republican Trump and President Joe Biden, a Democrat, which has been tight in opinion polls. World leaders and U.S. politicians condemned the shooting, while some industry executives, including Tesla chief Elon Musk, declared their support for Trump. Investors also expect an extension of corporate and personal tax cuts expiring next year, fuelling concerns about rising budget deficits under Trump.

The Republican Party and its conservative allies are engaged in an unprecedented legal campaign targeting the American voting system. Their wide-ranging and methodical effort is laying the groundwork to contest an election that they argue, falsely, is already being rigged against former President Donald J. Trump. The campaign involves a powerful network of Republican lawyers and activist groups, working loosely in concert with the Republican National Committee. Many of the key players were active in Mr. Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Mr. Trump’s allies have followed a two-pronged approach: restricting voting for partisan advantage ahead of Election Day and short-circuiting the process of ratifying the winner afterward, if Mr. Trump loses.

The NRA also hasn't ruled out the possibility of paying for LaPierre's continued legal fees, James' lawyers said. Former President Donald Trump speaks during his campaign rally at the Trump National Doral Golf Club on July 09, 2024 in Doral, Florida. Meta said Friday it's removing any previously imposed penalties and restrictions on former President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, as the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election nears. In January 2023, Meta said it would reinstate Trump on its platform, and he regained access to his accounts the following month. But Trump was still subject to remaining penalties and restrictions that could have led to his social media accounts facing long suspensions. A Meta spokesperson characterized the update as "simply bringing presumptive GOP nominee Trump to parity with President Biden."

The White House eventually tasks Kelly with filming a fake moon landing in case the real one fails. Apollo 11 spaceship launch director Cole Davis (Tatum) opposes Kelly's plan, believing it will discredit NASA's efforts. This storyline leans into the conspiracy theory that NASA faked the US moon landing in 1969. But there's no evidence to suggests NASA or any network tried to fake the moon landing.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is no stranger to controversy, and he found himself in the thick of another public-relations pickle before he strode to the stage at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday night. But in accepting the Pat Tillman Award for Service at ESPN’s annual made-for-TV gala, Harry graciously acknowledged his critics — including Mr. Tillman’s mother, Mary — while citing the work that his organization, the Invictus Games, had done since its inception in 2014. “The truth is, I stand here not as Prince Harry, Pat Tillman Award recipient,” Harry said during his speech, “but rather a voice on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation and the thousands of veterans and service personnel from over 20 nations who have made the Invictus Games a reality. This award belongs to them, not to me.”The awards show, which had its broadcast delayed by President Biden’s news conference, featured stars from the sports world and beyond in their formal best. There were emotional moments, like a speech from the former Alabama football coach Nick Saban, who won the Icon Award; powerful ones, like Dawn Staley, the women’s basketball coach at South Carolina, highlighting the pay gap in men’s and women’s sports; and some laugh-out-loud moments when presenters took swipes at people like Harrison Butker and Bronny James.

He found that the industries with the largest declines in hiring requirements also saw "rapidly cooling demand" for workers over this period.
