— In their first and only debate of an unusually competitive Maryland Senate race Thursday, Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and former Gov. Larry Hogan sparred over the issue of abortion and whether the deep blue state would be best represented by a staunch Democrat or an anti-Donald Trump Republican. Hogan distanced himself from the former president and current GOP presidential nominee, framing himself as someone willing to put "country over party." Alsobrooks dismissed that frame, arguing that a vote for Hogan would mean a vote for a Senate Republican majority that would threaten abortion rights and support for Ukraine. Hogan criticized Alsobrooks and "both sides" of the aisle for "trying to change the rules so they can pack the court."

Their employment rate is also slightly lower than women in their early 20s. "This smaller share reflects the fact that, within marriages, mothers are still more likely than fathers to specialize in child care," the Fed noted. Today, 26% of mothers are stay-at-home parents, compared with just 7% of fathers, according to a separate Pew study from August. Mothers working full time and year-round outside the home rarely recoup the lost wages, which add up to $20,000 a year, on average. Working moms are making just 71 cents for every dollar paid to fathers, according to an analysis of Census data by the National Women's Law Center.

The U.S. dollar fell from two-month highs hit overnight versus its major peers after signs of weakness in the labor market boosted the case for quicker Federal Reserve rate cuts. A week earlier, there was a 32.1% chance of a half-point reduction and 67.9% probability of a quarter-point cut. The dollar added 0.06% to 148.68 yen , inching back towards Thursday's high of 149.58 yen, a level previously not seen since Aug. 2. China is expected to announce extra fiscal policy support on Saturday. The lack of consumer support in China's last stimulus package disappointed investors. According to a Bloomberg survey, most analysts expect authorities to pledge $283 billion of fiscal stimulus at Saturday's highly anticipated press conference. Chinese authorities followed up by announcing Saturday's press conference, which promised to introduce new measures centered on fiscal policy. Some analysts remain less sure about what fiscal stimulus will actually achieve on its own, pointing out that Beijing needs to pursue structural reforms to revive consumer confidence.

CNN —Archaeologists have identified the cannibalized remains of a senior officer who perished during an ill-fated 19th century Arctic expedition, offering insight into its lost crew’s tragic and grisly final days. The remains identified as Fitzjames’ in the new study, published September 24 in the Journal of Archaeological Science, were among them. The remains of James Fitzjames, a senior officer who took part in Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to the Northwest Passage, showed signs of having been cannibalized, a new study said. However, unlike Fitzjames’ remains, Gregory’s bones did not display any cut marks suggestive of cannibalism. Canada’s national parks service and the Inuit communities found the final resting place of the HMS Erebus in 2014 and the HMS Terror in 2016.

Inside data brokers' massive vaultCybersecurity experts estimate that data brokers collect an average of 1,000 data points on each individual with an online presence. Little oversight around data privacyThe lack of comprehensive regulation around data privacy allows data brokers to operate with little oversight, unlike the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union. Opt-out links and instructions are readily available for most of the major data brokers: ExperianTransUnionLexisNexisEpsilon But data privacy experts says reclaiming or deleting your data from brokers can be a deliberately complex process that is not only time-consuming but frustrating. "With AI, data brokers will create even more detailed and predictive profiles, incorporating everything from biometric data to behavioral tracking," Abed said. Until regulation steps in, data brokers will continue to collect as much data as possible.

Oil eased on Friday after a rally the previous day, but prices remained set for a second straight weekly gain as investors weighed the impact of hurricane damage on U.S. demand against any broad supply disruption if Israel attacks Iranian oil sites. Brent crude oil futures fell 39 cents, or 0.5%, to $79.01 a barrel by 0152 GMT. "Oil prices are likely to hover around the current 200-day average levels, with the primary concern being whether Israel will retaliate against Iranian oil facilities," he said. Crude benchmarks spiked this month after Iran launched more than 180 missiles against Israel on Oct. 1, raising the prospect of retaliation against Iranian oil facilities. Israel has yet to respond, and crude benchmarks have eased and remained relatively flat through the week.

Union members are still angry that Boeing demanded they give up their traditional pension plans 10 years ago, when the company was doing well financially. Even with all of its problems, Boeing is likely at no risk of disappearing. If airlines that are Boeing customers cancel their order, they would have to wait five years for a comparable jet from Airbus. Beijing Reuters —China will “significantly increase” government debt issuance to offer subsidies to people with low incomes, support the property market and replenish state banks’ capital as it pushes to revive sputtering economic growth. “There is still relatively big room for China to issue debt,” he said. Reuters reported last month that China plans to issue special sovereign bonds worth about 2 trillion yuan ($284.43 billion) this year as part of fresh fiscal stimulus. Separately, Bloomberg News reported that China is also considering injecting up to 1 trillion yuan ($142 billion) of capital into its biggest state banks to increase their capacity to support the economy, primarily by issuing new sovereign bonds. That's because of a twisty backstory involving gun-shy Hollywood studios, a fledgling producer, and his father-in-law: Dan Snyder, a billionaire Trump supporter who initially bankrolled the movie. This comes two weeks after Hurricane Helene significantly damaged communities like Asheville, North Carolina, hundreds of miles inland, that were seemingly immunized from the worst effects of climate change. Treating climate change as a national security problem is not a liberal position but a hardheaded realist one. This framing of national security also endured after the 9/11 attacks. After Hurricane Milton, Americans should ask themselves: Are they safer now from threats like climate change and pandemics? And if not, isn’t it time for a real discussion of what truly constitutes national security to begin?

Between 2023 and 2024, independent pharmacies in the CVS Caremark pharmacy network were reimbursed 67.5% higher on average than CVS Pharmacy locations, and 51.9% higher than other chain pharmacies in the state. The CVS spokesman also said that CVS pharmacies are not all serviced by Caremark, working with over 70 different PBMs. "There are unfortunately many factors for pharmacy closures in rural areas, including population declines and the growing use of online pharmacies."
