REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 23 (Reuters) - Officials investigating the killing of a synagogue leader in Detroit over the weekend said on Monday that the crime does not appear to have been motivated by antisemitism, although the investigation is still ongoing. "We believe that there are no other groups or anyone else at risk in regards to this particular incident. We believe that this incident was not motivated by antisemitism," White said, adding that the investigation was still young. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel remembered Woll in a post on X as being driven by "her sincere love of her community, state and country."

State Senator Stephanie Chang, a longtime friend, said that since Oct. 7, when Hamas attacked Israel, Ms. Woll had been talking with Jewish and Muslim community leaders about helping civilians on the ground. She would always, he said, “draw out the best in everybody.”Speaking at the funeral, he noted the diverse crowd in attendance, which he said represented what Ms. Woll was about. “We have in this room, Muslims and Hindus, Catholics and Christians and Jews and all kinds of races, and everyone loves Sam and was affirmed by Sam,” he said. Rabbi Ariana Silverman of the Downtown Synagogue spoke about Ms. Woll’s recent work guiding the renovation of the synagogue, her leadership on fund-raising efforts and her openness to other viewpoints. “She certainly had her own convictions,” Rabbi Silverman said, “but she would really listen to different ideas and had the remarkable ability to say, ‘Let me think about it, and I will get back to you.’”

Opinion: Uncomfortable reality for Biden

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He didn’t live to see the allies’ victory in World War II that year or the conference in San Francisco that month that established the United Nations. But his diplomatic efforts to meet with Arab leaders came undone after a devastating explosion at a hospital in Gaza. Biden himself initially supported the US 2003 war in Iraq only to end up as the president who ordered the US pullout of Afghanistan. “This is the politics that Donald Trump’s rhetoric has wrought among his supporters in the Republican Party,” wrote Avlon.

Arab citizens and permanent residents in Israel make up just over 20% of the country’s population. The roughly 2 million people are distinct from Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank and Gaza – but they are far from a uniform group. Many have family in the West Bank and Gaza. Last Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some opposition leaders joined an emergency war cabinet to manage the war. The finance minister is Bezalel Smotrich, who supports abolishing the Palestinian Authority and annexing the West Bank – neither are part of the war cabinet, although they are maintaining their ministerial roles.

Like him, I’m an Arab, Muslim and American — an amalgam of identities that conjures up “pariah” in the world we live in. What does it mean for a mother who escaped war for the safety of an American suburb? This existential ballad of being Arab or Muslim in America is far more onerous, far more absurd. Wadea’s death foreshadows that these figures may spike again, and descend on the heads of Arab and Muslim Americans shadowed by suspicion.

“I know these conflicts can seem far away, and it’s natural to ask – why does this matter to America?” Biden said. Biden’s decision to combine aid requests for Israel and Ukraine will trigger a fierce political clash in Washington. Hell no.”Polls show that Americans do not necessarily buy Biden’s position that the threats to Ukraine and Israel are the same. Biden’s address, with the familiar backdrop of US and presidential flags in the Oval Office felt like a throwback to an earlier age — when presidents would interrupt primetime on the handful of TV channels at a moment of national crisis. Biden Says He's Heartbroken Over Loss of Palestinian Lives

President Biden's staunch support for Israel since Hamas’s attack on Oct. 7 has frustrated some progressives, Muslims and Arab-Americans, who say Biden hasn’t adequately expressed his sympathy for Palestinians or done enough to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In his address Thursday night, Biden said he was heartbroken over the loss of Palestinian lives and reiterated U.S. support for a two-state solution. “The actions of Hamas don’t take that away,” Biden said. “We can't ignore the humanity of innocent Palestinians who only want to live in peace and have an opportunity,” he said.

He said he would ask Congress on Friday for a combined security funding package – described at being around $100 billion for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the U.S.-Mexico border – to help Ukraine and Israel defend themselves. Biden warned that Putin would not stop there, perhaps moving to Poland or another NATO nation and escalating the conflict. NATO's charter says that if one member nation is attacked, all of NATO will come to that member's aid. Biden called for unity in the United States, including an intolerance for both antisemitism and Islamophobia in the wake of the Hamas attack. But he said it was imperative that the United States take the lead during the separate crises he said were related by the common theme of defending democracy and the dignity of people.

At the same time, Republican voters are warier of foreign conflicts and less interested in foreign policy than they have been during previous competitive primary elections, said Doug Heye, a Republican strategist. Republicans have often said that militants who support or carry out attacks on Israel will try to slip through the U.S.-Mexico border, despite scant evidence of it. He also said, without evidence, that Hamas militants were pouring over the U.S.-Mexico border.
