The Federal Reserve may have paused its aggressive interest rate hikes for now, but that offers little relief for anyone with credit card debt. The central bank raised interest rates 10 times since last year — the fastest pace of tightening since the early 1980s — and that has caused credit card rates to hit an all-time high. As the federal funds rate rose, the prime rate did, as well, and credit card rates followed suit. The average credit card now charges a record 20.69% — nearly five percentage points higher than the beginning of last year, according to Rossman. "While the skip means interest rates may not rise again this month, the high credit card interest rates consumers are currently seeing are going nowhere anytime soon," said Michele Raneri, vice president and head of U.S. research and consulting at TransUnion.

The high cost of living is the "top societal concern" of Gen Zers and millennials, a Deloitte survey found. Financial concerns have pushed 46% of Gen Zs and 37% of millennials to find a second job. The 2023 survey of more than 22,000 Gen Zers and millennials around the world found the high cost of living is the "top societal concern" of both generations, with 51% of Gen Zers and 52% millennials reporting they live paycheck to paycheck. Also, 46% of Gen Zs and 37% of millennials have taken on either a part- or full-time paying job in addition to their primary position, according to the survey. A March survey of 1,009 adults ages 24 to 35 by TIAA Institute found that 51% of Gen Zers and millennials don't expect to do as well financially as their parents.

At least 70 children in Gambia, most under 5 years old, died from acute kidney injury between June and October. Tests by the WHO found that the Maiden cough syrups contained the lethal toxins diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), used in car brake fluid. Indian officials have said the WHO failed to prove a causal link to the Gambia deaths, accusing the agency of denigrating its $41 billion pharmaceutical industry. However, cough syrups made by a second Indian drugmaker have been linked to the deaths of 19 children in Uzbekistan. India has since made drug testing mandatory for cough syrups before export.

☆ Rome Fiumicino seen as Lufthansa's new southern hub after ITA deal

Shares in Lufthansa were down 0.2% on Friday, a day after the airline and the Italian Treasury announced the ITA deal. A report from TRA consulting firm says some 43 million people travelled through Rome Fiumicino in 2019, before the COVID-19 outbreak, and the airport has potential to become an even stronger hub for the Mediterranean area. His report said this is due to the weakness of the national airline, and the integration of ITA into the Lufthansa group might help Fiumicino become an hub for travellers heading to the Americas. Lufthansa, which already operates the brands Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, said it would look to feed more passengers into Fiumicino airport. Analysts believe Lufthansa has good chances to boost Fiumicino, after fostering development of other airports it entered after its previous takeovers.

A new electoral system means New Democracy fell just shy of an absolute majority, paving the way for coalition talks this week though a second vote in June is more likely. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emerged stronger despite a wiretapping scandal, the COVID pandemic, a cost of living crisis and a deadly rail crash in February which triggered public outrage. "I think what Syriza missed was the willingness of the electorate to move away from the crisis politics era. That is what Mitsotakis understood whereas Syriza didn't," said Wolfango Piccoli, co-president of political risk advisory at Teneo. Another leftist party, MeRA25, led by Varoufakis, used a similarly cryptic slogan "Alliance for the Rupture".
