The legal overhang on Abbott Labs has been real, even if shares have found some traction in recent months. Bottom line Abbott Labs still faces other cases over its specialized formulas across the country, but Thursday night's win is significant. Abbott shares traded around 22 times forward earnings estimates Friday, below their five-year average of 24, according to FactSet. With victory in hand, Abbott Labs will now begin the next phase of its legal fight on much stronger ground. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have both talked about the importance of making childcare more affordable. Below are three elements of the childcare equation and what the Harris and the Trump camps have either proposed or already done. Child tax creditsTrump and Harris have both proposed expanding the child tax credit, which currently provides up to $2,000 per child. Harris' child tax credit policy would restore the enhanced pandemic-era credit, giving parents up to $3,600 annually per child, with the amount dependent on a child's age and family income. The US's pandemic-era child tax credit expired at the end of 2021 because Republicans in Congress opposed it.

Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign rally at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas, Oct. 25, 2024. But what could Harris actually do to support abortion access in a post-Roe landscape? Even so, she said, a Harris administration could increase the availability of medication abortions and, crucially, it could fight Republican and activist attempts to further limit reproductive rights. A Harris administration would not enforce the Comstock Act, a controversial federal law passed in 1873 that bans the mailing of obscene matter. "A Harris administration wouldn't be able to change what the Supreme Court is saying, but it could de-prioritize those prosecutions," Ziegler said.

On the campaign trail, both Trump and Kennedy have pitched a “Make America Healthy Again” movement. However, he wasn’t sure how Warp Speed would apply to childhood chronic diseases — or in what way Kennedy would be helpful. If the plan goes forward, Kennedy’s mandate would be an “all-of-government-project” and allow him to marshall resources from all of these agencies for childhood chronic disease. What’s still to be determined, Altman said, is how much — if any — authority the Warp Speed role would give Kennedy to command agencies such as the FDA or CDC. Trump transition co-chair Howard Lutnick also praised Kennedy in an interview with CNN Wednesday night, and questioned whether vaccines are actually safe.

In an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance suggested that he and Donald Trump can win the “normal gay guy vote” and that families with transgender children are looking for an edge in Ivy League college admissions. An early portion of the interview focused heavily on transgender people and transition-related medical care, which Vance described as “pharmaceutical conversion therapy” for gay people. “I mean that’s what to me is so crazy about some of the hyper-left-wing reaction,” Vance responded. “Well, I think I’m probably going to pick you, but I don’t know, and I’m not ready to make a decision,” Vance recalled Trump saying. “We’re sitting there watching, like, some stupid show, ‘Emily in Paris’ on Netflix or something,” Vance said, before catching himself.

William Herman Hietamaki was identified this month using genetic genealogy after construction workers initially found human bones near the Hoover Dam in 2009, according to a statement this week from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. Mohave County Sheriff's Office via FacebookThe items were turned over to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office, but no leads developed despite years of investigating. This month, the sheriff’s office learned that the John Doe in the case had ancestors with roots in Michigan dating back to the 1800s. The sheriff’s office said Hietamaki, a known hitchhiker who lived a nomadic lifestyle, had been traveling in the southwest United States. He was last seen when he visited his sister in New Mexico in 1995, according to the sheriff’s office.

This week, the state health department issued an advisory to doctors suggesting that recent ads about Nebraska’s abortion restrictions had created "confusion." She said the health department and Gov. Jeff Powell, communications director for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, said the intent of the health alert was to "clarify the current law." In response to the health department alert, two doctors in the state said there is no confusion among physicians about how to treat ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages. The Florida Health Department sent cease-and-desist letters to multiple broadcast stations that aired an ad supporting an abortion-rights ballot measure.

The Mary Rose was one of the largest warships of the Tudor navy during King Henry VIII’s reign until it sank on July 19, 1545, during a battle against the French. The Mary Rose was one of them, and the flagship became the king’s favorite. The hull of the Mary Rose, supported by a steel cradle attached to a lifting frame, was raised on October 11, 1982. The research team used Raman spectroscopy, a nondestructive method that preserves valuable samples, to study the bones, Shankland said. “Investigating the impact of this on the spine would further our understanding of bone chemistry changes with age, but also with stress from activity.”

I do think that seeing a woman on the ballot will, hopefully, encourage more women to vote, even if they don't vote for Harris. At the time, I thought it was going to be a landslide, like 'We're about to have our first woman president.' I don't think everybody in the U.S. will ever be ready for a woman president, but I don't think everybody in the U.S. was ready for a Black president either. Even if Kamala wins, I don't think everybody in the U.S. is ready for a woman president, just like they weren't ready for a Black president. I think Harris is just bringing a lot of new people into the process who haven't necessarily felt included before.

The number of E. coli cases linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has risen to 90, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday, up from 75 reported cases last Friday. The slivered onions used on the burgers are the “likely source” of the outbreak, the CDC said. The true number of cases linked to the Quarter Pounders is likely much higher than the 90 reported so far. Thirteen states have reported cases: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. According to McDonald’s, 900 restaurants across 12 states received the onions from Taylor Farms.

The update comes as the H5N1 virus continues to spread rapidly among dairy cows across the country. The bird flu outbreak in dairy cows has infected 387 herds across 14 states so far, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last week, the CDC released results of a monthslong investigation that found no evidence of bird flu spreading from human to human. It's unclear how the pig in Oregon was exposed to bird flu, although earlier this month state officials detected the virus in poultry on the farm.

He said he was glad that Harris chose to host a rally at the same spot where Trump told his supporters to march to the Capitol. While Hodges spent Jan. 6 fighting a pro-Trump mob in the lower west tunnel, he didn't see much action in the aftermath of Harris' speech. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued an El Paso doctor on Tuesday, accusing him of providing transition-related medical care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Texas enacted a law, Senate Bill 14, last year banning gender-affirming care for anyone under 18. Laws restricting access to transition-related care for minors exist in 26 states, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank. The Texas lawsuits come just ahead of the presidential election, where transition-related care has become somewhat of a flashpoint. UNRWA provides far more than humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip. Many Palestinians see darker motives, viewing the UNRWA ban as Israel's latest attempt to make their lives unlivable, first imprisoning and bombing them, now taking away their main aid lifeline. Palestinians wait to receive medicines at the UNRWA health center in Khan Younis last month. Despite its endorsements, the United States is yet to resume funding to UNRWA after Israel's Oct. 7 allegations. For many families, child care is often the biggest. Thanks to a state program launched during the recovery from the pandemic, they pay nothing for child care. Vice President Kamala Harris proposes capping child care costs at 7% of working families’ incomes, along with an up-to-$6,000 expanded child tax credit for those with newborns. The permanent fund now funnels more than $150 million from fossil fuel producers into child care subsidies, state officials estimate. As elder care costs continue to outpace inflation, the Democratic ticket sees that constituency as key to victory.
