Ron DeSantis at a fundraising picnic in Sioux Center, Iowa, on Saturday. Ron DeSantis has visited four times as many cities as former President Donald Trump this year in the state that will host the first Republican presidential nomination contest early next year. It is an early indication of how important Iowa will be for Mr. DeSantis, who is expected to announce a presidential bid by next month. After losing ground to Mr. Trump in polls of the still-forming race, he needs to find a place to make a stand in a party where the former president remains dominant. Aides say they hope Iowa, where Mr. Trump finished second in the 2016 caucuses, could be that place.

Donald Trump was found liable and ordered to pay $5 million in damages for sexual abuse and defamation in a civil case brought by E. Jean Carroll. Photo: Justin Lane/EPA/Shutterstock/Jeff J Mitchell/Getty ImagesDonald Trump, appearing in a live CNN town hall a day after a federal jury in New York found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation, blasted the decision, repeated his false claims about the 2020 election and defended his behavior during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot by his supporters. “They’re doing this for election interference,” Mr. Trump said, nodding to his claims of a vast conspiracy to stop his political career. “This woman, I don’t know her, I never met her,” he said of columnist E. Jean Carroll on Wednesday night from St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, where the nation’s first Republican primary will be held early next year.
Once known as Square, Block agreed in March 2021 to pay $306 million for an 87.5% stake in Tidal. The pension fund also said Dorsey, a co-founder of Block and Twitter, was Block's only top executive who supported the purchase, and bought Tidal because he and Jay-Z were friends. But in concluding that Block directors did not breach their fiduciary duties, McCormick said she could not "presume bad faith based on the merits of the deal alone." Jay-Z, the rapper and music mogul whose real name is Shawn Carter, joined San Francisco-based Block's board after the Tidal purchase and remains a director. The Delaware case was a derivative lawsuit that sought to have Block's directors or their insurers pay damages to the company for shareholders' benefit.
Last year, a parent at a Virginia school board meeting stepped up to a microphone and read a passage from my book, “Sold.” The scene she chose to read, informed in part by my own experiences of sexual abuse, describes the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl by an older man. There is no graphic language or obscenity in the passage; the story is told from the point of view of a child — in the words of a child — and conveys her confusion, terror and physical pain. It made the list thanks, in part, to Moms for Liberty, a right-wing organization that has created a playbook that’s been used across the country — by people who in some case are not even parents — to lobby to have books removed from libraries and classrooms. These challenges are not grass-roots responses to books coming home in students’ backpacks; they are campaigns orchestrated by a national clearinghouse with shadowy funding and apparent links to groups such as the Heritage Foundation. “Moms” in Texas, Florida, Idaho, Pennsylvania and elsewhere have all read the same passage and have used similar language to challenge the book.
MARION, Iowa—Republican presidential hopefuls seeking to exploit disputes over the rights of parents are finding fertile ground in this suburban area where a debate over gender identity has triggered division in the state that starts the 2024 nomination process. The Linn-Mar Community School District became a rallying point for conservatives last year after the school board approved rules giving students in grade seven or higher the ability to request a “gender support plan” that called for teachers and peers to address them by a new name and with new pronouns without parental notification. It also allowed students to use locker rooms and bathrooms corresponding to their preferred gender identity.
The 10 Senate seats most likely to flip in 2024

The GOP needs a net gain of one or two seats to flip the chamber, depending on which party wins the White House in 2024, and it’s Democrats who are defending the tougher seats. Jim Justice announcing his Senate bid in West Virginia – the seat most likely to flip party control in 2024. In a presidential year, the national environment is likely to loom large, especially with battleground states hosting key Senate races. Two businessmen with the ability to tap into or raise significant resources could be in the mix – Eric Hovde, who lost the GOP Senate nomination in 2012, and Scott Mayer. Still, unseating Cruz in a state Trump won by nearly 6 points in 2020 will be a tall order.

Will Donald Trump Agree to Any Debates?

Former President Donald Trump has a history of injecting chaos into the debate tradition. Photo: justin lane/ShutterstockDonald Trump is threatening to skip the first GOP primary debates, raising the prospects for messy negotiations and drama as the Republican National Committee seeks to tame internal divisions, treat a growing field of 2024 candidates equally and manage the demands of a man who helps drive the party’s grass-roots fundraising. The former president, who has a history of injecting chaos into the longtime tradition of candidate face-offs, asserted his front-runner status this week in objecting to the first two scheduled debates.
Investors may want to position themselves for a stagflationary environment after Thursday's gross domestic product reading for the first quarter showed lackluster economic growth and high inflation. First-quarter growth came in at a 1.1% annualized pace, much slower than the 2% growth expected by economists polled by Dow Jones. Stagflation is an economic condition the U.S. experienced in the 1970s, characterized by slow economic growth and elevated inflation, along with high unemployment. The one ingredient missing today is the high unemployment, but mounting layoffs are raising fears that will change soon too. But it's a reasonable bet that certain stocks with pricing power and resilient revenue sources could outperform in this kind of environment.
Photo: Jonathan Ernst/ReutersNikki Haley received stock options worth close to $300,000 roughly six weeks after jumping into the 2024 presidential race as part of a real-estate company merger that could deliver even more lucrative payouts in the years ahead, Securities and Exchange Commission filings show. The 26,703 shares of United Homes Group Inc. stock awarded on March 30 to Ms. Haley—a former South Carolina governor who hasn’t been employed full-time since resigning as United Nations ambassador from the Trump administration in 2018—was part of her compensation for serving on the company’s board of directors.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—Sen. Tim Scott ’s language was heavy with spiritual references during a recent speech here in the state that will start the Republican presidential nomination balloting early next year. Moving amid tables of GOP activists assembled in a country club ballroom, like a minister who had stepped down from the pulpit, the South Carolina senator thanked “God almighty,” talked of “false prophets,” spoke of “redemption” and “blessings” and thanked “God almighty” again.
America’s cultural cancer manifests itself in many ways, but no symptom is more telling than our low military recruitment. Last year the Army hit only 75% of its recruiting target, while other services had to scramble to meet theirs. The all-volunteer force, formed 50 years ago, is in peril and threatens our ability to defend ourselves in a dangerous world. A volunteer military requires able-bodied recruits, but 77% of young Americans would be unfit to serve for health reasons. Every year, fentanyl and other drugs take more than 106,000 lives and affect millions more, reducing the pool of recruits.

Republicans weighing 2024 Senate bids in key states haven't settled on Donald Trump for 2024. "As Senate Republican's primary dynamics get messier by the day, Senate GOP candidates are in a lose-lose situation when it comes to Trump," said Nora Keefe, a spokesperson for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Representatives for the three GOP prospects and the Senate GOP campaign arm either did not elaborate or respond when asked for comment. Rep. Mike Gallagher, a potential Senate candidate in another battleground state, Wisconsin, has repeatedly said he would not support Trump since the Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in the January 6 insurrection. I stand by what I said," he said during an Axios forum when asked if he would support Trump if he becomes the nominee.

For the first time since inflation began accelerating in mid-2021, restaurant prices outpaced grocery prices on a 12-month basis, according to the Labor Department. For months, restaurant CEOs like Cheesecake Factory's Matthew Clark and Wendy's Todd Penegor have touted their meals as a relative bargain compared with eating at home, based on consumer price index data. March food prices rose 8.5% over the last 12 months, fueled by the jump in the cost of eating away from home, which was up 8.8% over that period. The National Restaurant Association's chief economist, Bruce Grindy, attributed the increase to the surge in food prices at schools as free lunch programs instituted during the Covid pandemic expired. The overall consumer price index has risen 5% over the last 12 months as inflation continues to cool.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., on Monday announced he will seek a fourth term in the battleground state next year as Democrats fight to keep their Senate majority. "I'm running for re-election because with so much on the line for Pennsylvania's working families, I want to keep delivering results for Pennsylvania," Casey said in a statement announcing his re-election campaign. No other candidates for the 2024 Pennsylvania Senate race have been officially announced. During his time in the Senate, Casey has joined Republicans and other Democrats to negotiate bipartisan bills. Casey, who has long held anti-abortion views, had a complicated stance on the government's role in abortion rights.
Just hours after Donald Trump became the first former president to be indicted, Republicans filed into a tavern northwest of Milwaukee to commiserate over Tuesday evening’s loss of a hard-fought race for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat. As the clock approached midnight, a heated debate broke out between two men active in the local GOP, said Randy Marquardt , the party chairman in Washington County. One argued for loyalty to Mr. Trump, he said, while the other insisted it is time for the party to pick someone else as their 2024 presidential nominee. “It got ugly and people eventually went their separate ways to head home,” said Mr. Marquardt. “The other guy argued that Trump came with too much baggage, but there are still quite a few people who are all in with Trump.”Mr. Marquardt, who twice voted for the former president, says he thinks it is time to move on.
