Yet, there they were back at Globe Life Field on Wednesday getting ready to host Game 1 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Political Cartoons View All 1218 ImagesGame 1 is Friday night in the retractable-roof stadium that hosted MLB’s neutral-site World Series in 2020, the first year the ballpark opened. Texas and Arizona both had to win Games 6 and 7 of their respective League Championship Series on the road to get to the World Series. But it set up the third World Series matching wild-card teams. The Rangers have home-field advantage in the World Series because their 90 wins in the regular season were six more than Arizona had.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trea Turner had the moment that could have pushed the Phillies toward the World Series waiting for him. Harper, though, lined a 2-1 fastball to center to end the scoring threat, the inning — and Philadelphia's last, best chance to return to the World Series. The Diamondbacks used a walk-off Game 3 single and a tying two-run homer late in a Game 4 win that wiped out an 0-2 NLCS hole. Castellanos struck out — one of 11 in the NLCS — and, after a walk to Brandon Marsh, Thomson let the light-hitting Rojas take his cuts. The Phillies have not won a World Series since 2008.

With Sen. Laphonza Butler not running for a full term, the California race remains wide open. Former MLB All-Star Steve Garvey, a Republican, jumped into the Senate race earlier this month. Sen. Laphonza Butler, center, will not run for a full Senate term in 2024. There will be two Senate races on the November 2024 ballot: a special election to fill the Senate term through January 2025 and a general election for the full Senate term ending in January 2031. Given the Democratic lean of the state, there's a strong chance of a Senate race between two Democrats.

Abreu was suspended Saturday by MLB senior vice president Michael Hill, a day after the incident. The reliever appealed, allowing him to pitch in Game 6, and the hearing was held Monday before John McHale Jr., a special assistant to baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. He was pleased with the resolution since it allows him to pitch this postseason despite the suspension not being reduced. “That was kind of what I was hoping for when I didn’t use him in a down game two innings yesterday,” Baker said. Abreu, García and Baker were ejected.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston reliever Bryan Abreu has appealed the two-game suspension he was given by Major League Baseball for what the league said was intentionally throwing at Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers during Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. Because of the appeal, Abreu will be eligible to pitch in Game 6 on Sunday night, when the Astros can advance to the World Series for a third straight season with a win. MLB said Saturday that all six umpires decided Abreu’s pitch was intentional. Abreu, who was also fined for the incident, is one of Houston's top relievers and has a 1.42 ERA in seven appearances this postseason. CNN —Both benches cleared as tempers flared in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) between the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers on Friday. García immediately dropped his bat and turned to confront Houston catcher Martín Maldonado, with the pair exchanging words. Although no punches were thrown, Abreu, García and Houston manager Dusty Baker were all ejected after a delay of almost 12 minutes. They now hold a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven series, having won the last three games, and are one win from a spot in the World Series. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jose Altuve homered, Cristian Javier worked into the sixth inning of another solid postseason start and the Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers 8-5 on Wednesday night, closing to 2-1 in the AL Championship Series.
