A weather station in Liangtian Village, Baiyun District, about 1.7 miles from where the tornado hit, registered a maximum wind gust of 20.6 meters per second, Xinhua reported. When the White House issued an executive order last October to promote safe and responsible development and use of artificial intelligence in the federal government, one of the first agencies to say it was on board the AI train was the Department of Homeland Security. In one pilot, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) will test AI to help in investigative processes focused on detecting fentanyl and combatting child exploitation. The unprecedented speed and potential of AI's development and adoption presents both opportunities and risks, according to Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security. What DHS learns from the pilot projects will be beneficial in shaping how it can effectively and responsibly use AI across homeland security moving forward, he said.

☆ OpenAI opens its first Asia office in Japan as a 'first step' in its commitment to the region

OpenAI has opened its first Asian office in Tokyo, Japan as the ChatGPT developer aims to expand its global presence. As part of the move, the company has appointed Tadao Nagasaki as the new president of OpenAI Japan, to head commercial and market engagement efforts. Altman met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last year and reportedly mentioned he was looking into opening a new office in Japan. The company is backed by Microsoft and has a private market valuation that's reportedly approaching $100 billion. This is the "single largest investment in its 46-year history in Japan, also the site of its first international office," Microsoft said.
