The U.S. added the fewest jobs in 2-1/2 years in June, although persistently strong wage growth pointed to still-tight labor market conditions, U.S. government data showed. "The jobs report today I think is consistent with what the Fed would like to see," said Josh Jamner, investment strategy analyst at ClearBridge Investments. According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 (.SPX) lost 12.42 points, or 0.28%, to end at 4,399.17 points, while the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) lost 18.33 points, or 0.13%, to 13,660.72. Energy (.SPNY) and materials (.SPLRCM) were among the biggest-gaining S&P 500 sectors, while defensive groups including consumer staples (.SPLRCS) lagged. Friday's jobs report kicks off a busy month of data including reports on inflation and corporate earnings ahead of the Fed meeting at the end of July.

July 6 (Reuters) - Levi Strauss & Co (LEVI.N) cut its annual profit forecast on Thursday, in a sign that higher costs were weighing on the denim maker's margins at a time when its wholesale sales remained under pressure in North America. Annual reported net revenue is expected to increase 1.5% to 2.5% from a year earlier, the apparel maker said, narrowing its previous forecast range of 1.5% to 3%. Industry peer American Eagle Outfitters (AEO.N) had also cut its full-year revenue forecast in May amid weak consumer spending environment. San Francisco-based Levi's has been grappling with higher costs, more promotions and supply chain snarls despite multiple price hikes on its products. Its quarterly revenue fell 9.1% to $1.34 billion, roughly in-line with analysts' expectations, according to Refinitiv data.

Stock futures were little changed Thursday evening, as investors refocused their attention on the upcoming June payrolls report and the implications for the Federal Reserve's policy stance. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 futures were flat. That figure far exceeded the 220,000 estimate from economists polled by Dow Jones. This week's main event for economic data looms ahead: the Labor Department's June payrolls report, which is due Friday morning. Economists polled by Dow Jones anticipate an increase of 240,000 positions, a cooldown from May's gain of 339,000 jobs.

The Brussels bombings killed 15 men and 17 women from almost a dozen countries -- many of whom lived in the city which is home to European Union institutions and NATO. The accused men will have a last opportunity to speak before the jury has to answer more than 300 questions and will go into full isolation for about two weeks, unprecedented in Belgium. Six of the accused were found guilty in June 2022 of involvement in terror attacks in Paris in November 2015, which killed 130 people. One of the group is presumed to have been killed in Syria and is being tried in absentia. BRUSSELS, July 4 (Reuters) - NATO decided on Tuesday to extend Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s contract by a further year, opting to stick with an experienced leader as war rages on the alliance’s doorstep rather than try to agree on a successor. In a tweet, Stoltenberg said he was honoured by the decision to extend his term to October 1, 2024. "NATO member states have decided logically enough that the best secretary general currently on the market place is the one they already have. Others pressed the case for a first secretary general from eastern Europe. So NATO - and above all its predominant power, the United States - turned back to Stoltenberg.

At a summit in Brussels, the leaders restated their condemnation of Russia's war against Ukraine and said the EU and its member countries "stand ready" to contribute to commitments that would help Ukraine defend itself in the long term. In a text summarising the conclusions of the summit, the leaders said they would swiftly consider the form these commitments would take. Ukraine needs our commitment to continue ensuring their security during the war and after the war," he added. The final text said the EU would contribute "together with partners" and "in full respect of the security and defence policy of certain Member States". Ukraine has argued the best way to assure its own security and that of Europe is for it to join NATO.

Since, on your first nursing job, you unexpectedly found yourself assigned to the I.C.U. floor and caring for Covid patients, did you ever regret your decision to become a nurse? I wasn’t afraid to be the person watching someone die, or being with them when they were. I was good at being present as they passed, and I could work under a tremendous amount of stress. Once you were accepted into a nursing program, you realized you were one of the oldest people attending.

Trump must set aside $5.55 million dollars for E. Jean Carroll while he appeals her successful defamation verdict. On Friday, he made the unusual move of asking the court to hold the money as cash, rather than as a bond. Surety experts say the move saves Trump the price of a bond premium: just $55,000. Trump attorney Joe Tacopina filed the request Friday with US District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over the defamation and sexual assault trial. That amount could be nothing if Trump wins an outright reversal of the judgment, or less than $5 million if an appeals court reduces the judgment.

There was the silk citrine Greek goddess-style dress, a floral appliqué Estee Couture bridal gown, and a disco ball-inspired floor-length dress for the after party. “I wanted it to be a bridal look that stood out, and the bride should stand out,” said Mrs. Mihalos Sfaelos, 35, a senior director of talent relations at SiriusXM radio in New York. “You can’t just wear a white bathing suit.”Other brides seem to feel the same way, especially with destination weddings, and designers and stylists are paying close attention. Today’s bridal swimwear are not just fashion-forward white bathing suits — they are beaded and bedazzled, fancy and frilly, lacy and Lycra-fitted, and custom made.

BRUSSELS, June 19 (Reuters) - Belgian foreign affairs minister Hadja Lahbib is facing calls for resignation after granting visas to delegations from Iranian and Russian cities to attend a mayors convention in Brussels last week. State secretary for external relations & foreign trade of the Brussels government Pascal Smet resigned on Sunday over the all-expenses paid trip. I am now asking the organizers, Metropolis, to bear these costs," Smet told a press conference on Sunday. Why only three weeks after the release of Olivier Vandecasteele, she accepts that terrorists come to Brussels? And why must the name of Belgium always be sullied by foreign relations which it cannot manage to control?"

Two months into her search, she saw a post that promised a gorgeous, 42-inch walnut wood and brass dining room table in good condition. It was part of the décor at Günter Seeger, a Michelin-starred restaurant that was closing in the West Village. “I met the owners and could tell they were sad about selling these pieces.
