CNN —Several athletes – including American star Noah Lyles – were caught up in a crash between two buggies at the World Athletics Championships, causing Jamaican sprinter Andrew Hudson to get glass in his eye. Footage of the incident ahead of the athletes’ 200-meter semifinal shows the buggies colliding at a junction outside the stadium in Budapest, Hungary. Hudson, the Jamaican champion over 200 meters, appeared to be in pain after the incident and later explained how shattered glass had got into his eye. Andrew Hudson and Noah Lyles race in the 200-meter semifinals at the world championships. Unfortunately, Andrew Hudson did seem to get some glass in his eye which was the hold-up.

Four days after winning the 100 metres, Lyles, twice world 200m champion, ran 19.76 seconds to record the fastest time in Thursday's semi-finals. Lyles' heat was delayed by 30 minutes after the golf cart transporting him and the other runners from the warmup track to the stadium crashed into another cart. American Kenny Bednarek, the Olympic silver medallist, ran 19.96 for the second fastest time, edging Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, the 100m silver medallist who crossed in 19.97. The 26-year-old Lyles is seeking to become the first man to win the sprint double since Usain Bolt in 2015. American Erriyon Knighton qualified fourth and Britain's 100 metres bronze medallist Zharnel Hughes, who beat John Regis's 30-year-old national record in the 200 this season, was fifth.

Lyles takes next step towards sprint double

The 26-year-old boldly predicted he would run 19.10 in the 200, which would break Usain Bolt's 2009 world record of 19.19, though that long shot would only conceivably come in Friday's final. Lyles was ill with Covid ahead of last month's U.S. trials. "I try to make all my races look as easy as possible, even if they aren't," said Lyles, who is seeking to become the first man to do the sprint double since Bolt in 2015. The 19-year-old Knighton has a personal best of 19.49 - second fastest in the field - and season's best of 19.72. Kenny Holston/The New York TimesThe first presidential debate of the Republican primary campaign saw eight of the top candidates criticize President Biden’s administration, attack one another and use policy details to defend their own records. Without former President Donald J. Trump on the stage, there was not a litany of falsehoods for which he is often known. But the candidates did selectively choose facts to buttress the case for their candidacies and score political points against their rivals.

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in the killing of O’Shae Sibley, who was stabbed to death on July 29 after a dispute over his dancing at a Brooklyn gas station. Mr. Sibley, a gay man who was a professional dancer and choreographer, was returning from New Jersey to his home in Brooklyn with four friends that night when the group stopped at a gas station in the Midwood neighborhood, the police said on Saturday. As they filled up their car, they played Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album and began dancing, officials said, at which point a group of men approached and told them to stop. The men yelled homophobic slurs and anti-Black statements at Mr. Sibley, who was Black, and his friends, Mr. Kenny said, all while demanding they stop dancing. Bystanders acted as “peacemakers,” and the men shouting at Mr. Sibley’s group began to disperse, Mr. Kenny said — except for the defendant.

How to Work Out Safely in the Heat

If the temperature outside is greater than 90 degrees or if the sun is shining, your body will also be heated by the environment, Dr. Kavouras said. “As you’re adding this huge external heat source, the body’s got to deal with that,” said Glen Kenny, a physiologist who studies the body’s stress response at the University of Ottawa. The main way the body sheds heat is through the evaporation of sweat, which cools the surface of the skin, Dr. Kavouras explained. This happens more easily in dry heat than in humidity, but in dry heat, sweat can evaporate so quickly that you may not notice it. “You don’t even see it and you don’t even know that you’re getting so dehydrated,” Dr. Kavouras said.

How heat affects an aging bodyThe human body has two main mechanisms to cool itself: sweating and increasing blood flow to the skin. In older adults, those processes are compromised — they sweat less and they have poor circulation compared with younger adults. A diseased heart isn’t able to pump as much blood, further reducing blood flow to the skin. And if the nerves become affected in people with severe diabetes, the body might not receive the message that it needs to start sweating. In hot conditions, that can cause them to become dehydrated faster, which is “hugely detrimental for temperature control,” Dr. Crandall said.
