Screenshot of Johanna Michely Garcia of MJ Capital Funding, who was sentenced on Dec. 3, 2024, to 20 years in prison in a Ponzi scheme. A Florida woman who pleaded guilty for her role in a Ponzi scheme that raked in nearly $200 million was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison. Judge Jose Martinez also sentenced Garcia to three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment, plus additional restitution which will be determined on March 3, the case docket shows. "As a result, Garcia paid investors by running a large Ponzi fraud scheme, paying existing investors using new investor funds while misappropriating millions of dollars for her own personal benefit." In 2021, investors in MJ Capital filed a lawsuit accusing Wells Fargo Bank of aiding the fraud scheme by failing to follow its own anti-money laundering policies.

After giving birth, I felt detached from myself and knew I needed to make changes. Giving birth became the fuel I needed to start hormone replacement therapy finally. As my bump grew and I began to receive the excited swell of compliments, I drifted farther from myself. But 10 weeks postpartum, I began to notice I was entirely detached from my body. Transitioning postpartum has not only been a way of choosing myself, but showing up authentically makes me the parent my son needs.

One of Canada's large financial holding companies appears to be an attractive dividend investment opportunity, according to Scotiabank analysts. This development could boost Power Corporation's dividend growth rate, as Great-West represents its largest source of dividend income. "We think the value of the dividend growth is not reflected in the stock price and is underappreciated by the Street," the analysts added. Scotiabank's price target of 56 Canadian dollars ($40) is around 20% above the current stock price, with additional upside potential if dividend growth rates increase. The company recently agreed to sell its stake in Peak Achievement Athletics for around 440 million Canadian dollars, providing additional capital for potential shareholder returns.

But with Medicare Advantage plans, there are provider networks that limit the choice of doctors and hospitals from which a beneficiary may choose, he said. Call Medicare Advantage plans or medical providers directly to find out if they are still covered, as brochures can sometimes be outdated, Cubanski said. Medigap, also known as Medicare supplement insurance, provides private insurance to help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered under original Medicare plans. But experts say the choice between private Medicare Advantage plans and government Medicare original plans is largely personal. However, Medicare Advantage enrollees may need to get prior authorization before receiving certain types of care, Cubanski said.

The secretary general of South Korea’s National Assembly, Kim Min-ki, condemned the military on Wednesday morning for breaking into the legislature during President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief imposition of martial law, saying that nearly 300 troops had stormed the compound. Mr. Kim offered the most detailed official account yet of the military’s incursion. About 230 troops were flown by helicopter onto the assembly grounds, and roughly 50 others jumped fences to gain entry, he said. Mr. Kim played closed-circuit footage of soldiers entering the compound, saying that all such video would soon be made public. As the secretary general, Mr. Kim is nonpartisan, but he was a member of the opposition Democratic Party until last spring.

The Biden administration on Tuesday moved to end a program that had for decades allowed companies to pay workers with disabilities less than the minimum wage. The statute, enacted as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, has let employers obtain Labor Department certificates authorizing them to pay workers with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage, currently $7.25. The department began a “comprehensive review” of the program last year, and on Tuesday it proposed a rule that would bar new certificates and phase out current certificates over three years. “This proposal would help ensure that workers with disabilities have access to equal employment opportunities, while reinforcing our fundamental belief that all workers deserve fair competition for their contribution,” Taryn Williams, assistant secretary of labor for disability employment policy, said on a call with reporters. As of May, about 800 employers held certificates allowing them to pay workers less than minimum wage, affecting roughly 40,000 workers, said Kristin Garcia, deputy administrator of the Labor Department’s wage and hour division.

The mission assigned to Pat Gelsinger when he took over Intel as CEO in 2021 was to restore the then 52-year-old company to relevancy. Its business of designing and manufacturing chips — once industry-leading — was struggling. "By the time Intel began to work on AI chips, it was too late, and the company had basically no market share." Its line of AI chips, known as Gaudi, has paled compared to offerings from competitors like Nvidia. Doing so will require strengthening its fab manufacturing business, which The Futurum Group's Newman notes is no easy feat.

AdvertisementNew survey data from Evercore suggests Netflix has room to raise prices. Netflix's subscriber gains from its password-sharing crackdown could be waning, and some on Wall Street think it'll raise prices soon to keep its growth going. Its quarterly survey of Netflix subscribers, published December 1, showed that Netflix is in a strong position based on market penetration, satisfaction, and likelihood of canceling. Netflix's lower-priced ad tier has also increasingly kept people from canceling while giving the streamer cover to raise prices on its pricier, ad-free tiers. The last time Netflix raised prices on its Standard ad-free plan was January 2022, when it raised it by $1.50 to $15.49.

Apple is currently using Amazon Web Services' custom artificial intelligence chips for services like search and will evaluate if the company's latest AI chip can be used to pre-train its models like Apple Intelligence. Benoit Dupin, Apple's senior director of machine learning and AI, took the stage to discuss how Apple uses the cloud service. Apple uses those cloud services, too. Benoit said that Apple had used AWS for over a decade for services including Siri, Apple Maps and Apple Music. Apple has used Amazon's Trainium and Graviton chips to serve search services, for example, and Benoit said that Amazon's chips had led to a 40% efficiency gain.

It’s one thing to be rich in New York City these days. It’s quite another to be able to afford private school. This divide between the haves and have-mores helps tell the story of a city turned so upside down by rising prices that even the very upper end of the middle class is feeling squeezed. Private schools are seen by many families as a crucial ladder to top colleges and social connections. New York City private schools have turned out some of the most influential people in America, including Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken; Jamie Dimon, the JPMorgan Chase chief executive; and several generations of Rockefellers and Kennedys.
