Wall Street rose on enthusiasm over a rally in U.S.-listed shares of Chinese companies, while copper climbed on hopes of increased demand from China, its biggest consumer. "The realization that China is going to be back online and producing product will help bring down inflation and that's a good thing. Treasury yields rose as investors awaited a report next week on inflation and the Fed meeting. Global bond yields, which move inversely to price, have tumbled in recent weeks on expectations of slower growth or recessions will curb the rise in rates. Gold prices edged higher as the dollar eased and investors positioned themselves ahead of the U.S. inflation data and the Fed's policy announcements.

This year, it’s the Democrats with a noteworthy shakeup to the 2024 primary and caucus calendar. Biden finished a distant fourth in Iowa and fifth in New Hampshire and was seen as dead in the water. Perhaps what makes Iowa even more problematic for Democrats is that it has moved out of the political center. In 1988’s Democratic caucus, it is still arguably unknown who really won: the declared winner, Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt, or Illinois Sen. Paul Simon. Perhaps what makes Iowa even more problematic for Democrats is that it has moved out of the political center.

President Biden has already seen 85 of his judicial nominees confirmed. President Biden is primed to make federal judicial appointments a continuing priority during his next two years in office after Democrats retained a narrow Senate majority in the midterm elections. Mr. Biden took office following four years in which former President Donald Trump left a significant conservative mark on the federal judiciary, placing judges in roughly 230 life-tenured positions, the most in a single term since the Jimmy Carter administration. That included three Supreme Court justices and 54 judges for the powerful U.S. appeals courts.
The $50 Stanley Quencher boasts a double-walled design that puts an end to melting ice and frequent refills. Its real achievement might be solving a less technical problem: how to show off in today’s casual, hybrid workplace. Put the Jimmy Choo shoes and Armani suits back in the closet. The new on-the-job status symbol is a tumbler only slightly smaller than hockey’s Stanley Cup and nearly as valuable to some. Sometimes going for two to three times its retail price on the secondary market, this desktop trophy allows its owner to flaunt a combination of trendiness, disposable income and, presumably, bladder control.

The U.S. Energy Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, or ARPA-E, aims to develop a dozen projects to recycle spent nuclear fuel. "I don't see many really looking seriously into reprocessing," Grossi told Reuters in an interview late on Wednesday at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter had halted reprocessing of nuclear waste in 1977, citing proliferation concerns. "Nobody will be doing reprocessing without the IAEA being involved," he said, noting that any nuclear waste recycling North Korea is undertaking is an exception. The United States has spent billions of dollars over decades on a project at Yucca Mountain in Nevada to store nuclear waste.
Nov 9 (Reuters) - Michael Kors-owner Capri Holdings Ltd (CPRI.N) on Wednesday lowered its sales and profit forecasts for the holiday period, blaming a slow demand recovery in China due to persistent COVID-19 curbs and uncertainty about the global economy. Luxury goods companies have managed to pass on higher costs to affluent shoppers, but China remains a sore spot as Beijing's "dynamic zero-COVID" policy hampers the return of consumers to high-fashion stores. COVID disruptions in China have also weighed heavily on Kering's (PRTP.PA) Gucci, Canada Goose Holdings (GOOS.TO) and L'Oreal (OREP.PA). Capri, which also owns Versace and Jimmy Choo, cut its holiday-quarter sales forecast to $1.53 billion, from $1.65 billion, and lowered its profit forecast to $2.20 per share from $2.45 per share. It forecast fiscal 2023 revenue of $5.70 billion, compared with its prior estimate of about $5.85 billion.
New York CNN Business —Tuesday’s midterm elections come at a time of economic vulnerability for the United States. Americans are feeling the pain of rising interest rates and are facing a winter filled with geopolitical tension. If Republicans get the House, tax hikes are dead in the water,” said David Wagner, a portfolio manager with Aptus Capital Advisors. Biden’s stock market record is the second worst since Jimmy CarterThe stock market under President Biden started with a boom, but as we head into midterm elections, markets are going bust, reports my colleague Matt Egan. By contrast, Biden’s two immediate predecessors headed into their first midterm election with stock markets surging.

Jimmy Kimmel is back as host of the 95th Oscars in 2023, marking the late-night star’s third time fronting the ceremony — which he last did five years ago. The “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host previously led the 2017 and 2018 telecasts, the former of which produced the famous “La La Land” and “Moonlight” best picture screw-up. “Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap,” Kimmel said in a statement. “Jimmy is the perfect host to help us recognize the incredible artists and films of our 95th Oscars,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang said in a statement. Added Craig Erwich, president, ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals: “Having Jimmy Kimmel return to host ‘The Oscars’ is a dream come true.
Net worth is 30% higher than before the pandemic, more so for those in the bottom half. Overall, the economy is expected to grow in 2022, albeit slowly, after concerns earlier in the year that it had begun to contract. The unemployment rate has averaged 3.6% since March - better than before the 2018 midterm elections under Trump, and unrivaled really since the 1966 midterm elections. But a third of both Democrats and Republicans said they had delayed a "home, office or other purchase" because of higher rates - decisions that can sting as families plan for the years ahead. But for the last year the growth has stalled, and heading into the elections on Tuesday there seems little optimism left.
Trump’s mendacity is arguably the Second Big Lie. Four years earlier, the Hillary Clinton campaign and leading Democrats refused to acknowledge the outcome of the 2016 election, by claiming Donald Trump was not a legitimate president. “He knows he’s an illegitimate president,” said Clinton, also three years later. She repeated this sentiment in 2020, telling The Atlantic the election “was not on the level,” and again when she called Trump’s win illegitimate. These two phenomena are inextricably linked: The 2016 election denial paved the way for Trump’s lies four years later.
New York CNN Business —The stock market started the Biden era with a boom. Entering Monday, the S&P 500 advanced just 13.2% since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. Of course, the stock market is not the economy, nor should it be viewed as a barometer to govern towards. Slammed by the Fed’s all-out war on inflation, the S&P 500 is down 20% this year, on track for its worst year since 2008. The underperformance of the stock market under Biden matters because many Americans have exposure to stocks, either directly or indirectly in their 401(k) and pension plans.
After oil prices soared following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, European governments already have imposed windfall taxes on their oil industries. But most U.S. lawmakers show little appetite to reverse that trend after oil companies like Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp <CVX.N. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Representative Ro Khanna, both Democrats, are among legislators who have already introduced bills to tax excess oil company profits. Democratic Senators Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona and Joe Manchin from West Virginia would likely oppose a windfall profits tax, dimming its prospects, congressional sources and research groups said. Administration officials conceded privately that it may be difficult to enact a federal windfall profits tax, and said no deadline has been set for a next step.
A Windfall Profits Tax: Energy Policy for Dummies

President Biden has the worst energy policy since Jimmy Carter , so it was probably inevitable that he would disinter one of Mr. Carter’s worst ideas—a “windfall profits” tax on oil companies. Doesn’t he know that when you tax something, you get less of it? Sorry, rhetorical question. “Their profits are a windfall of war—the windfall from the brutal conflict that’s ravaging Ukraine and hurting tens of millions of people around the globe,” Mr. Biden said Monday of oil companies reporting strong earnings this year.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) very good: $516 million versus $470 million expected.

On Oct. 15, hundreds gathered in Telluride, Colo., to celebrate the life of renowned ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson . Nelson, 49, died on Sept. 26 when she triggered a small avalanche while skiing off the 26,781-foot summit of Mount Manaslu in Nepal. The crowd read like a who’s-who from the world of climbing and adventure. Jimmy Chin, who won an Academy Award for his 2018 documentary “Free Solo,” shared stories of a long friendship. Nelson’s death triggered an outpouring of tributes from people around the world, most of whom, like me, didn’t know her personally.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, or ARPA-E, aims to develop a dozen projects to recycle the waste, also known as spent nuclear fuel, with $38 million in funding. France and other countries have reprocessed nuclear waste by breaking it down into uranium and plutonium and reusing it to make new reactor fuel. President Joe Biden's administration supports development of advanced nuclear plants to help reach his goal of decarbonizing the U.S. economy by 2050. Recycling nuclear waste "can significantly reduce the amount of spent fuel at nuclear sites, and increase economic stability for the communities leading this important work," Granholm said. As a result, the waste is now stored at nuclear power plants across the country in spent fuel pools and in casks made of steel and concrete.
