Mark Zuckerberg's Threads is probably the app best poised to take down Elon Musk's Twitter. The door's now open for two billion people to start threading their thoughts in a place that's not Twitter. Meta's slated to debut its new rival to Twitter — an app called Threads — on July 6. Threads' main advantage is probably the number of people already using Instagram, or a reported two billion monthly active users in 2021. Meta's chief product officer, Chris Cox, has called Threads a response to creators and public figures who wanted a platform that's "sanely run."

Some Redditors said they'll no longer use the site after third-party app Apollo shut down. A popular third-party Reddit app shut down Friday – and some of the social network's users are pledging to walk away as a result. The app, which let Redditors access the platform through its own interface, had more than 1.5 million monthly users in June, Selig said, citing data from analytics firm Mixpanel. The Canadian developer previously said Reddit's demands for compensation were unreasonable compared with how much money Apollo made from paid subscriptions. June 30 (Reuters) - Twitter will now require users to have an account on the social media platform to view tweets, a move that owner Elon Musk on Friday called a "temporary emergency measure". Users who try to view content on the platform will be asked to sign up for an account or log into an exiting account to see their favorite tweets. "We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users!" Earlier in the month, Twitter had announced plans to focus on video, creator and commerce partnerships to revitalize the social media company's business beyond digital advertising. Twitter has also begun charging users to access its application programming interface (API), used by third-party apps and researchers.

Washington CNN —As demand for greater transparency in artificial intelligence mounts, Meta released tools and information Thursday aimed at helping users understand how AI influences what they see on its apps. These describe how Meta selects what content to recommend to users. Meta’s so-called “system cards” cover how the company determines which accounts to present to users as recommended follows on Facebook and Instagram, how the company’s search tools function and how notifications work. Previously, Meta had only offered the ability for users to tell Instagram to show less, not more, Clegg wrote. On both Facebook and Instagram, he added, users will now be able to customize their feeds further by accessing a menu from individual posts.

The FTC sued in Amazon in federal court in Seattle, alleging that "Amazon has knowingly duped millions of consumers into unknowingly enrolling in Amazon Prime." The FTC said Amazon used "manipulative, coercive or deceptive user-interface designs known as 'dark patterns' to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically renewing Prime subscriptions." The FTC said Amazon Prime is the world's largest subscription program, generating $25 billion in revenue annually. Consumers who attempted to cancel Prime were faced with multiple labyrinthine steps to accomplish the task of cancelling, according to the complaint. The FTC complaint said Amazon used the term "Iliad Flow" to describe the process it began in 2016, referencing Homer's epic poem about the lengthy Trojan war.

CNN —The Federal Trade Commission sued Amazon on Wednesday, alleging that the e-commerce giant has tricked millions of consumers into signing up for its Prime subscription service through deceptive user interface designs. “Specifically, Amazon used manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs known as ‘dark patterns’ to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically-renewing Prime subscriptions,” the FTC complaint said. With Prime, Amazon is able to generate billions in revenue from subscriptions and incentivize customers to spend more time and money on its platforms. According to Wednesday’s complaint, Amazon took some steps in April, in response to FTC pressure, to simplify users’ ability to cancel their Prime subscriptions but before then had denied customers the ability to easily cancel their Prime subscriptions online. Other than contacting customer service, Amazon offered no alternative to consumers wishing to cancel apart from going through the Iliad process, the FTC said.

Insider's investigation revealed that Amazon knowingly duped consumers into Prime subscriptions. The suit was the result of an Insider investigation in early 2022. One of those letters, reviewed by Insider, said the FTC made a Civil Investigative Demand to Amazon in March 2021. A CID is a legal document enforceable in court that seeks documents or other information related to an FTC investigation. In April 2022, the FTC sent more correspondence about the issue to Amazon lawyers, according to the letter, which cited Insider's original story from March 2022.

The FTC filed a new lawsuit accusing Amazon of "tricking" customers into joining Prime. Prime subscriptions cost $14.99 a month and generate $25 billion in revenue each year, the complaint said. The company "knowingly duped millions of consumers into unknowingly enrolling in its Amazon Prime service," the FTC said in its complaint filed in federal court in Washington state. "Specifically, Amazon used manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs known as 'dark patterns' to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically-renewing Prime subscriptions," the agency alleged. Prime members tend to buy more and shop more frequently at Amazon, driving higher sales and a more loyal customer base for the retail giant.
