Circuit Judge Stephanos Bibas sets the stage for what could be one of the first trials related to the unauthorized use of data to train AI systems. "This case continues to be about Ross’ theft of Thomson Reuters proprietary commentary, analysis, and organizational system," the spokesperson said. Thomson Reuters' 2020 lawsuit accused legal research company Ross Intelligence of copying Westlaw's "headnotes," which summarize points of law in court opinions. Thomson Reuters accused Ross of misusing thousands of the headnotes to train its AI-based legal search engine. Bibas also said he could not decide whether a ruling for Ross or Thomson Reuters would best serve the public interest.

Australia is working with the US and UK to build nuclear-powered subs and other military technology. It can be intentional — for example, a foreign intelligence service spreading election conspiracies on social media — or unintentional, as when someone unwittingly shares the foreign intelligence service's social-media posts. Australian officials look at the Collins-class submarine HMAS Collins in September 2021. Those Australian intelligence officials echoed worries that US officials have about foreign efforts to compromise AUKUS. US intelligence officials estimate that Chinese espionage steals US economic secrets worth between $200 billion and $600 billion a year.

Slamming the tentative labor deal between Hollywood writers and studios, media mogul Barry Diller on Tuesday laid out his biggest bone of contention with generative artificial intelligence. "All we want to do is establish that there is no such thing as fair use for AI, which gives us standing." Generative AI and language-based model systems index entire bodies of work within their knowledge base, a violation of fair use, some argue. Altman, who also served on the Expedia board with Diller, testified before senators in May to discuss regulations on AI. Altman also said that Shutterstock was critical in the training of OpenAI's generative media AI, DALL-E.

A representative for Warner Music (WMG.O), which is a defendant in the case, declined to comment. Hines first sued over the songs in 2019, arguing they copied part of the introduction to his song. Strike signs await striking SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) outside Disney Studios in Burbank, California, U.S., July 25, 2023. The WGA, which represents 11,500 film and television writers, described the deal as "exceptional" with "meaningful gains and protections for writers." While writing may resume, the SAG-AFTRA actors' union remains on strike. Efforts to restart daytime talk shows without writers, such as "The Drew Barrymore Show," collapsed this month, in the face of criticism from striking writers and actors. Even as studio executives celebrated the end of the longest-running writers' strike since 1988, it is only half the labor battle.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. said Monday that it's pausing construction of a $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan until it is confident it can run the factory competitively. The move comes as the company is in the midst of national contract talks with the United Auto Workers union, which wants to represent workers at battery factories and win them top wages. In February, Ford announced plans to build the plant in Marshall, Michigan, employing about 2,500 workers to make lower-cost batteries for a variety of new and existing vehicles. But Ford spokesman TR Reid confirmed Monday that plant construction has been paused and spending has been limited on it. Earlier this year Virginia dropped out of the race for the same Ford plant after Republican Gov.

How companies are embracing generative AI...or not

New York CNN —Companies are struggling to deal with the rapid rise of generative AI, with some rushing to embrace the technology as workflow tools for employees while others shun it – at least for now. Some companies are enacting internal bans on generative AI tools as they work to better understand the technology, and others have already begun to introduce the trendy tech to employees in their own ways. Among media companies that produce news, Insider editor-in-chief Nicholas Carlson has encouraged reporters to find ways to use AI in the newsroom. Of the companies currently banning ChatGPT, some are discussing future usage once security concerns are addressed. “I don’t think it’s that companies are against AI and against machine learning, per se.

Hong Kong CNN —Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo says the US government has no evidence that Huawei can produce smartphones with advanced chips “at scale,” as it continues to investigate how the sanctioned Chinese manufacturer made an apparent breakthrough with its latest flagship device. On Tuesday, Raimondo told US lawmakers that she was “upset” by news of the launch of Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro during her visit to China last month. “The only good news, if there is any, is we don’t have any evidence that they can manufacture 7-nanometer [chips] at scale,” she told a US House of Representatives hearing. That surprised many because SMIC, a partially state-owned Chinese company, has also been subject to US export restrictions for years. The following year, the US government expanded on those curbs by seeking to cut Huawei off from chip suppliers that use US technology.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday warned investors not to get caught up in the sense of "gloom" shrouding Wall Street — especially in September, a historically down month for the market — that is bringing down stocks of companies he sees as solid. "Once we get through this seasonally tough period, things will feel very differently, and the gloom will finally lift." Cramer explained that sometimes factors unrelated to the actual health of a company cause stocks to fall. He also said gloom is clouding Wall Street's perception of Nvidia — which finished Tuesday down about 1% — saying there isn't any solid reason the stock is going down. Cramer also pointed out Starbucks ' recent decline and analyst downgrade, due to concerns about its performance in China.

As a financial planner, I have to be honest with you and say passive income is a bit of a myth. This is a realistic, achievable, and accessible way for most people to build passive income. Start a business (or invest in one)You can create passive income if you can build a business that operates without you. This path to passive income is one of the most narrowly available to a small group of people, though. But if your goal is passive income, earning royalties provides an avenue to achieving that for your future self.
