Ahead of those meetings, defections in Biden’s Democratic coalition in Congress continued. More than a dozen Democratic House members and at least one Democratic senator have publicly called on Biden to withdraw from his reelection campaign. Speaking with reporters on Friday, Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler acknowledged “anxiety” from Capitol Hill, but insisted Biden will continue outreach to lawmakers to shore up his support. Biden, for his part, came off as chastened during the news conference and was less defiant than in previous appearances. Biden’s campaign, meanwhile, has bluntly acknowledged the challenges it has faced since his debate performance two weeks ago.

The leader of the House Democratic caucus said Friday that he had met with President Joe Biden to share opinions from his caucus about "the path forward," an apparent reference to Biden's status as the party's presidential nominee. Jeffries earlier Thursday had said he intended to poll every member of the House caucus about their feelings on keeping Biden as the party's nominee. The timeline underscores the urgency that House Democrats view Biden's political situation. "On behalf of the House Democratic Caucus, I requested and was graciously granted a private meeting with President Joe Biden," Jeffries wrote. "As House Democrats have done throughout this Congress, we will continue to work in the best interests of everyday Americans," the leader wrote.

CNN —Sex and gender are often conflated or equated in everyday conversations, and most American adults believe a person’s gender is determined by sex assigned at birth. But a new study of nearly 5,000 9- and 10-year-olds found that sex and gender map onto largely distinct parts of the brain. The researchers on the new study defined sex as what was assigned to the child at birth. They also hope to see how different cultures affect a person’s gender and their brain development. The study did not look at whether sex or gender were congruent or incongruent in any study participant.

President Biden’s re-election campaign is in jeopardy because of his poor debate performance. But lurking behind the Democratic anxiety is another factor: the polls. The average of polls has shown Donald J. Trump with an almost uninterrupted lead for 10 months, and this undoubtedly shapes the calculation of Democrats in Washington. This puts a big responsibility on polls and pollsters. While they continue to be the best way — or only way — to measure public opinion in a big, diverse country, polls have been wrong before, and they will be wrong again.

Pressures faced by lower-income consumers have been smoothed over by robust spending from the middle- and higher-income cohort. 'A shift in priorities' Even with cracks emerging in the consumer, many investors anticipate a soft landing for the economy. "They are spending, but they're being more particular than they were before in terms of what they're spending on," she added. "As more consumers shift their meal preferences to eating at home as opposed to eating out, that could provide a catalyst to lift these stocks valuations," he wrote. But a Republican win yielded a higher return at 15.3%. The S&P 500 fell 9% in 2000 as the tech bubble peaked months before George W. Bush's Republican win. This could increase the chances of a Trump win — at least, that's what the market thinks. The two graphs below from a Goldman Sachs note on July 8 indicate what prediction markets perceive as each candidate's odds of winning following the debate. On that front, consumer discretionary stocks are perceived as riskier under a Trump administration due to the threat of increased tariffs.

CNN —A piece of woolly mammoth skin excavated from the Siberian permafrost has been found to contain fossil chromosomes in a first-of-its-kind discovery, according to a new study. The new study revealed that fossils of ancient chromosomes survive in this skin sample. But the DNA from elephants was also needed to assemble the mammoth genome. The researchers hope to use the findings to assemble the woolly mammoth genome completely. “This structural information provides insights into functions of the woolly mammoth genome that were invisible using previous genomic methods,” Heintzman said in an email.

Macron had called for a new legislative nationwide vote in France after the country's far-right party made significant gains in the European Union election last month. The gamble that French President Emmanuel Macron took when he called a snap election has not paid off, according to Armin Steinbach, Jean Monnet professor of EU Law and economics at HEC Paris. Macron's centrist Ensemble bloc is set to make up the second-largest group in parliament, followed by the RN and its allies. Just because the far-right did not perform as they had hoped in this election does not mean they should be discounted for the presidential election in 2027, Steinbach added. "For today it's a loss for them, … but it doesn't tell us anything about the 2027 presidential election.
