CNN —Donald Trump’s conviction in his criminal hush money trial last month led to the two largest single days of fundraising for his White House campaign this cycle, newly released campaign finance reports show. On May 30 and May 31 — the day of the conviction and the day after — at least $27 million in itemized contributions flowed into the former president’s main campaign committee, according to a CNN analysis of donors giving at least $200 over the cycle. Prior to the conviction, the two largest fundraising days were following Trump’s indictment in the hush money case in Manhattan in early April 2023 — his first indictment — and his booking into the Fulton County jail in late August for charges in the Georgia 2020 election subversion case. But each of those days brought in daily itemized contributions closer to $1.3 million, less than a tenth of the nearly $15 million that flowed into the campaign on May 30 of this year, the records show.

ShotSpotter, a system the Police Department uses to detect gunfire, is overwhelmingly inaccurate and leads officers to spend hundreds of hours each month investigating nonexistent shots, according to an audit the New York City comptroller released Thursday. The Police Department has spent more than $45 million on ShotSpotter since it started using it in 2015, even as cities around the country have stopped using the system. New York must decide before December whether to renew its contract with SoundThinking, the California company that owns the system, and the audit advises officials to decline until the system can be fully evaluated. Of the 940 alerts officers responded to last June, only 13 percent corresponded to confirmed shootings. And in 2022, the audit found, the system also failed to detect more than 200 real incidents of gunfire in Manhattan.

Barbara Gladstone, an art dealer whose eye for spotting talent and knack for nurturing it helped her to build one of the largest and most influential contemporary art galleries in New York, died on Sunday in Paris. She was 89. Her gallery said her death, in a hospital, was caused by an ischemic event, whose symptoms are similar to those of a stroke. Ms. Gladstone, who was on a working trip to Paris, lived in Manhattan. What brought these disparate artists together on her list was her abiding interest in them personally and the devoted way she husbanded their work.

James Chance, the singer, saxophonist and composer who melded punk, funk and free jazz into bristling dance music as the leader of the Contortions, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. His brother, David Siegfried, said Mr. Chance had been in declining health for years and succumbed to complications of gastrointestinal disease at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in East Harlem. Contortions songs like “I Can’t Stand Myself” and “Throw Me Away” filled the rhythmic structures of James Brown’s funk with angular, dissonant riffs, to be topped by Mr. Chance’s yelping, blurting, screaming vocals and his trilling, squawking alto saxophone. He was a live wire onstage, with his own twitchy versions of moves adapted from Brown, Mick Jagger and his punk contemporaries.

Elisa Marshall and Benjamin Sormonte didn't want to be overly ambitious when launching a business in New York in 2014. Some items feature "a fun twist," Marshall says: The salted chocolate cookie sandwich with white chocolate ganache resembles a fancier, French version of an Oreo. Sormonte and Marshall didn't know how much launching a cafe in New York would cost, and ended up spending $250,000. The praise brought in waves of customers, and Maman brought in roughly $2 million in revenue during its first full year. And it was great," Marshall says, adding: "Next thing you know, we're the hottest cookie in New York."

There won’t be a trial anytime soon — or maybe ever — for Donald Trump on charges related to Jan. 6. If Mr. Trump is elected, there might not be a trial at all. One of the things a trial gives you is an answer: There is an ending to a trial. But on some level even a hung jury provides an answer: Here is tangible evidence of a societal inability to resolve this issue. There won’t even be an ending like that to Jan. 6, and if you think about it, there still isn’t a clean separation between the event and the politics of 2024.

At the end of May, the Perelman Arts Center posted a clip on social media of “Jellicle Cats,” the catchy, effervescent opening number from the musical “Cats.” It showed a group of queer performers catwalking in a rehearsal room before breaking apart to freely dance and vogue. One singer wore a cap winkingly topped with feline ears; another stared down the camera and twirled her ponytail with declarative swagger. This was the first real glimpse of a new, ballroom-inspired revival of “Cats,” running through July 28 at PAC NYC, as the Perelman Center in Manhattan is known. Since it was announced nearly a year earlier, the show had been a subject of skepticism and mocking humor: “Cats” was ridiculous enough, but ballroom? Then the “Jellicle Cats” clip went viral, and jaws dropped.

For more than a decade, Oren Alexander was one of the biggest names in ultraluxury real estate in Miami and New York City. He helped to broker the record-setting 2019 purchase of a penthouse at 220 Central Park South, a deal closed for nearly $240 million. The real estate empire that he helped to build in the sky in multimillion-dollar perches of glass and steel in both cities is now crumbling under mounting allegations of violent sexual assault. Mr. Alexander, 36, was accused in two separate lawsuits filed earlier this year of sexually assaulting two women more than a decade ago. Oren’s identical twin brother, Alon, an executive in a private security firm, is also named as a defendant in both complaints.

Coming on Tuesday, Microsoft plans to start selling new AI-enabled laptops at Best Buy, with roughly 40% of Copilot+ PCs exclusive to the retailer. We think that high-end offerings like these will give Best Buy a much-needed boost in sales and later for its stock price, too. In Monday's note to clients, the analysts also said that Best Buy can get a "volume benefit from lowering prices on previous models of the same product." That's a key reason why we first initiated our position in Best Buy earlier this year. People walk past a Best Buy store in Manhattan, New York City, November 22, 2021.

Read previewIn 2020, the first presidential debate between then-President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden devolved into a political grudge match, filled with insults. Trump largely disregarded the intended format of the debate by constantly interrupting Biden. But the 2024 election debates between Biden and Trump are poised to be much more structured and less chaotic. And microphones will be muted for both Biden and Trump when the opposing candidate is speaking. The debate will also be held just a few weeks before Trump, 78, is due for his sentencing in Manhattan.

Many forms of help are tied to the federal poverty line, which is calculated using a formula that has largely not been updated since the 1960s. The poverty line is calculated in an outdated wayThe current federal poverty line for the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC, is $15,060 a year for one person, $20,440 for a family of two, and $31,200 for a family of four. Courtesy of Melissa HeddenMuch of the resistance to changing the federal poverty line could stem from the government's desire not to inflate the number of people in poverty overnight. Kevin Mullin, a Democrat from California, has introduced legislation — called the Poverty Line Act— that would modernize the federal poverty line, taking into account actual costs of goods and how prices differ across regions. New Jersey officials revealed this week that they are looking at the licenses at his three golf courses there. Say Trump is landlord to the bar operators at one of these properties, and it's the bar operators who hold the liquor license, Pierce said. If Trump is charging the bar a flat rent, his felony status won't impact that liquor license. Trump would still have options, though, even if his hush-money conviction voided one or more of his liquor licenses.

Donald J. Trump flew into Washington last summer in a state of misery. He was there for his criminal arraignment, and he told associates afterward that the city was disgusting. He could feel Washington’s hostility, aides said. Today, he returns to the nation’s capital under much different circumstances — to flex his dominance over a political and business establishment that has been forced to come to terms with him. After years of hoping that someone else could step up to lead their party, that establishment is gradually submitting to the reality of the 2024 campaign.

Massimo Pinca | ReutersDETROIT – Since spearheading a merger to create Stellantis in 2021, CEO Carlos Tavares has been on a cost-cutting mission. "We are not in the race to transition to EVs, but in a race to cut cost on EVs," Tavares said in late May during a Bernstein investor conference. The cuts are part of Stellantis' strategic plan to increase profits and double revenue to 300 billion euros by 2030. Executives on Thursday will outline developments across Stellantis' regions and businesses, including its capital and operational disciplines, according to Stellantis CFO Natalie Knight. A perfect storm of plunging property values for aging buildings, weak tenant demand coming out of the pandemic and high interest rates for new loans and refinancing has left the $2.4 trillion office building sector wobbling. For some real estate investors, that may be a good thing. In April, a little-known firm, Yellowstone Real Estate Investments, paid $185 million for 1740 Broadway, a storied office tower near Columbus Circle in Manhattan. And this week, two real estate firms snapped up a Midtown Manhattan tower for less than $50 million, according to Bloomberg. Even though these are relatively small buyers, their emergence is a sign of the pain building in the U.S. commercial real estate market.
