There’s another one attacking President Trump,” Committee Chairmen Jim Jordan of Ohio said in his opening statement. “The Justice Department’s got both sides of the equation covered.”Republican Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana alleged that the public no longer trusts the Justice Department. The Justice Department works for the American people.”The hearing comes shortly after the Justice Department indicted Hunter Biden on federal firearms charges. Republicans have alleged that the Justice Department interfered with the Hunter Biden investigation. The topic is sure to stick around as Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Biden will put a particular focus on how the Justice Department handled Hunter Biden’s case.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland testifies during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee on oversight of the Department of Justice, on Capitol Hill, in Washington, D.C., Sept. 20, 2023. WASHINGTON — Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered a full-throated defense of federal law enforcement officers and the Department of Justice in testimony Wednesday before the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee. Even the official announcement of the oversight hearing underscored Jordan's political agenda, explaining that lawmakers intended to "examine how the Justice Department has become politicized and weaponized under the leadership of Attorney General Merrick Garland." Our job is not to take orders from the president, from Congress, or from anyone else, about who or what to criminally investigate," the attorney general said. Garland said, "All of us at the Justice Department recognize that with this work comes public scrutiny, criticism, and legitimate oversight."

This will be Garland's first testimony before Congress since two historic firsts: the department's criminal charges against a former U.S. president, Trump, and against a sitting president's adult child. Republicans have also been critical of the department's handling of a five-year-long tax investigation into Hunter Biden, 53. Weiss' office this month charged Hunter Biden with three counts related to purchase and possession of a firearm while he was using illegal drugs. Hunter Biden intends to plead not guilty. "Singling out individual career public servants who are just doing their jobs is dangerous," Garland plans to say.

The lawsuit against the IRS is only the latest in a series of counterpunches by the president's son. Now, Hunter Biden could be heading to trial in the midst of his father’s reelection effort. Hunter Biden, according to his memoir, tumbled into drug addiction after the death of his older brother, Beau, in 2015. Earlier this year Hunter Biden hired high-profile attorney Abbe Lowell, a legal heavyweight known for also representing Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. “And it is not even touching on the issue of whether people think that he is being prosecuted because he’s Hunter Biden," she said.

CNN —President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, plans to plead not guilty to federal gun charges, he said in a court filing Tuesday. He is also asking for his initial court appearance to be held remotely. In a letter to Magistrate Judge Christopher Burke, attorney Abbe Lowell said Hunter Biden will plead not guilty to the three felony gun charges relating his possession of a revolver in 2018 whether the appearance is held over video or in person. Hunter Biden was previously fingerprinted and had his mug shot taken when he was in court in July when his plea deal collapsed. Because it was in federal court, the photo was not made public.

White House spokesperson Ian Sams on Tuesday accused Republicans of trying to "distract from their own chaotic inability to govern" by "staging a political stunt." Sams said they had not requested any information from the White House. The House can approve formal charges - articles of impeachment - by a simple majority.

The new testimony comes as House Republicans begin an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and his family, potentially undercutting one element of that effort. At issue is an October 2022 meeting between prosecutors and case agents working on the Hunter Biden investigation. But the deal fell apart amid scrutiny from a judge, and Weiss subsequently requested special counsel status. Shapley, a 14-year IRS veteran who oversaw parts of the Hunter Biden probe, alleged in testimony to Congress there was political interference in the investigation. Last week, CNN and others reported on Sobocinski’s testimony, which prompted Shapley’s attorneys to dispute his recollection of the October 2022 meeting.

Hunter Biden will plead not guilty during his initial court appearance for three federal felony gun charges, his attorney said Tuesday as he denied that the son of President Joe Biden is asking for "special treatment" at his first court appearance in the case. Hunter's lawyer Abbe Lowell revealed that planned plea as he asked a judge to hold the court appearance by video conference instead of in person at U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware. The court appearance has not yet been scheduled. Lowell wrote in Tuesday's letter that Biden was "not seeking any special treatment" by requesting the video conference for his first appearance in court on the charges. Lowell's letter called prosecutors' opposition "puzzling," arguing that he was making a "common-sense request in seeking a video appearance.

Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the Oversight Committee chair, said Tuesday that he plans to subpoena the personal bank records of Hunter Biden , the president's son, and his brother James Biden. The House Oversight Committee will hold the first hearing on the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden on Sept. 28, a committee spokesperson said Tuesday. A spokesperson for the oversight committee said the subpoenas could come as early as this week. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-California, last week directed three GOP-led committees to launch an impeachment inquiry into Biden. The impeachment inquiry is being led by Comer on the Oversight Committee, Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan of Ohio, and Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith of Missouri.

Hunter Biden plans to plead not guilty to three federal gun charges during an initial court appearance and is requesting to hold the hearing by videoconference instead of appearing in federal court in Wilmington, Del., his lawyer said in a filing on Tuesday. Mr. Biden, 53, was indicted last week by David C. Weiss, the special counsel overseeing the case, on two charges that he lied about his drug use to purchase a handgun in 2018 and on one charge of illegally possessing the weapon, which he had for less than two weeks. The not-guilty plea was expected. The decision to file criminal charges against Mr. Biden, the president’s troubled younger son, came after the collapse of a plea deal in July that would have resolved the long-running investigation without him serving prison time. Biden also will enter a plea of not guilty, and there is no reason why he cannot utter those two words by videoconference,” Abbe Lowell, Mr. Biden’s lawyer, wrote in a two-page letter to Judge Christopher J. Burke.

Hunter Biden sued the Internal Revenue Service on Monday, saying that investigators for the agency violated his privacy rights by disclosing details to Congress and the public about his taxes and the investigation into his conduct. Mr. Biden, the president’s son, filed the suit days after the Justice Department indicted him on separate charges relating to his purchase of a handgun in 2018. investigators violated the agency’s rules on taxpayer privacy and “targeted and sought to embarrass Mr. Biden via public statements to the media in which they and their representatives disclosed confidential information about a private citizen’s tax matters.”It points to the public testimony and statements by two I.R.S. investigators, Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, who have been providing information to House committees seeking evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden and his family. Mr. Shapley and Mr. Ziegler have told House Republicans that they believe the Justice Department inquiry into Hunter Biden’s taxes was influenced by politics.

The octogenarian president is increasingly coming under scrutiny over his ability to serve a full second term if he wins in November 2024. But the trauma seizing Washington will soon intrude, transfixing the nation in a tumultuous 2024 election. The turmoil in the Republican Party is creating the kind of dysfunction and extremism that could turn off general election voters next year. In more placid times, the auto strike would be a dominant national issue defining a fraught political moment. But it’s just one of many crises threatening to overwhelm a political system that appears on the verge of a serious malfunction.

CNN —Hunter Biden sued the Internal Revenue Service on Monday, alleging its agents illegally released his tax information and that the agency failed to protect his private records. He is seeking, among other things, all documents involving the disclosure of the tax information, $1,000 for each unauthorized disclosure and attorneys fees. The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Washington, DC, does not name the two IRS agents turned whistleblowers as defendants. The IRS agents went public with their allegations concerning the Justice Department’s handling of investigation into Hunter Biden earlier this year. After the judge would not sign off on the deal, talks broke down between US attorney David Weiss’ office and Hunter Biden’s attorneys.
