Deutsche Bank AG is a German multinational investment bank and financial services company headquartered in Frankfurt. Deutsche Bank on Wednesday snapped a 15-quarter profit streak with a narrower-than-expected loss, as it made a provision for an ongoing lawsuit over its Postbank division. The long-running lawsuit by investors alleges Deutsche Bank underpaid to take over the retail banking giant in 2010. Other highlights included:Profit before tax excluding the Postbank provision was 1.7 billion euros, up from 1.4 billion euros in the second quarter of 2023. Provision for credit losses was 476 million euros, up from 401 million euros a year ago.

CNN —Insurers have begun calculating the financial damage caused by last week’s devastating CrowdStrike software glitch that crashed computers, canceled flights and disrupted hospitals all around the globe — and the picture isn’t pretty. The estimates come the same day that CrowdStrike issued a preliminary report on how it inadvertently caused the widespread IT meltdown. Numerous Fortune 500 companies use CrowdStrike’s cybersecurity software to detect and block hacking threats. Only a small portion, around 10% to 20%, may be covered by cybersecurity insurance policies, Parametrix added. The company routinely tests its software updates before pushing them out to customers, CrowdStrike said in the report.

CNN —Rare footage captured by a camera strapped to the back of an endangered shark shows the jarring moment it was struck by a boat — prompting the animal to dash into deep waters and rest for hours. It’s not clear whether the massive 23-foot (7-meter) animal, known as a basking shark, ultimately survived the collision. The basking shark is a massive creature, growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) long, and is among the largest fish in the world — second only to the whale shark. But the video and study findings that came out of the incident are timely for the shark research community, noted Dr. Christopher Lowe, the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. One person survived the Saurya Airlines crash, the Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement. The Saurya Airlines plane caught fire at the airport in Kathmandu, Nepal on July 24, 2024. Last year, Nepal saw its worst plane crash in more than 30 years when at least 68 people died when a Yeti Airlines flight went down near Pokhara. Israel faces a strategic dilemma over how best to retaliate for the drone attack on Tel Aviv claimed by Yemen’s Houthi militia, which is based thousands of miles from Israel’s southern borders. The attack, which struck an apartment building early on Friday near the United States diplomatic compound, killing one person and wounded several others, has heightened concerns in Israel about the threat of Iran. Tehran funds and encourages militias opposed to Israel throughout the region, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, in addition to the Houthis in Yemen. According to military experts, those factors make it harder for drones to be tracked by radar and intercepted by surface-to-air missiles. Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defense minister, has vowed revenge for the attack, but analysts said this weekend that Israel had few obvious options against a militia that shares no common border with Israel and has appeared undeterred by earlier displays of force by Western powers.
