House Republicans are expected to hear from speaker candidates behind closed doors on Tuesday and vote to choose their nominee on Wednesday. A House floor vote to elect a replacement for Republican former Speaker Kevin McCarthy could come later in the week. "It's not ideal," Republican Representative Michael McCaul told CNN on Sunday. "What kind of message are we sending to our adversaries when we can't govern, when we're dysfunctional, when we don't even have a speaker of the House?" "I am not going to support anybody until the conference figures out spending," Republican Representative Ken Buck told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

Though long used to war, Israel was blindsided by the multi-pronged attack by Hamas gunmen in which hundreds were killed. One mother spoke with Reuters after giving her DNA sample and handing over a brush with hair follicles from her son, who was at an outdoor dance party that was stormed by Hamas gunmen. Outside the police center, a man prayed with a rabbi as his fiancee filled in a report for her missing brother. Its location was Khan Younis, a city in Gaza. Saturday's incident marked an unprecedented infiltration by Hamas gunmen into Israel from Gaza, and was the most serious escalation since Israel and Hamas fought a 10-day war in 2021. Israeli media reported gunbattles between bands of Palestinian fighters and security forces in towns in southern Israel. Hamas military commander Mohammad Deif announced the start of the operation in a broadcast on Hamas media, calling on Palestinians everywhere to fight. The Israeli military was aware of reports of captives, a security source said, but provided no further details. Israel's ambulance service said teams had been dispatched to areas in southern Israel near Gaza and residents were warned to stay inside.

Israel's inability to anticipate the attack was a "colossal" intelligence failure, analysts say. Israel has one of the most sophisticated intelligence networks in the Middle East. AdvertisementAdvertisementIsrael was rocked by a wave of unprecedented attacks carried out by Hamas fighters on Saturday, with reports of thousands of rockets being fired into the country and gunmen roaming the streets. Observers have noted that Israel's failure to anticipate the attack, which likely took months of complex planning, is a failure of their famously sophisticated intelligence agencies. There have also been unconfirmed reports of IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians being captured by Hamas fighters and taken to Gaza.

As many knowledgeable people have pointed out, what Hamas has done is clearly an act of terrorism, no matter what your definition. In another video, geolocated by CNN to southern Israel, near Gaza, Hamas militants are seen taking Israelis captive. Both Iran, the principal sponsor of Hamas, and Hezbollah, another Iran-linked terrorist organization committed to Israel’s destruction, praised Hamas. As sure as night follows day, Israel will retaliate, and millions around the world will blame Israel – and the Jews – ignoring what happened this bloody Saturday. But there’s no denying that what happened on Saturday was an act of terrorism, one that deserves clear, unequivocal condemnation

The spree of vandalism and arson by hundreds of settlers in several villages and towns in the occupied West Bank last month followed the June 20 killing of four Israelis by Hamas gunmen. Their goal was "to arouse fear or shock in the community through a grave blow to the sacrosanct," it said. The charges - including disorderly conduct, insulting religion, aggravated arson and aggravated assault - normally carry maximum prison terms ranging between three and 20 years. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry described the settler rampages as "state-sponsored terrorism". Israel's hard-right government includes ministers who chafe at attributing the term terrorism to settlers.
