The stabbing on Friday of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd in 2020, at a special unit inside a Tucson, Ariz., prison is the latest in a series of attacks against high-profile inmates in the troubled, short-staffed federal Bureau of Prisons. The assault comes less than five months after Larry Nassar, the doctor convicted of sexually abusing young female gymnasts, was stabbed multiple times at the federal prison in Florida. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate at the Tucson prison was stabbed around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, though the bureau did not identify Mr. Chauvin, 47, by name. The agency said in a statement that the inmate required “life-saving measures” before being rushed to a hospital emergency room nearby. The office of Keith Ellison, the Minnesota attorney general who prosecuted the former police officer, identified the inmate as Mr. Chauvin.

Price drops may be needed to thaw the housing market, which could take years, Zandi said. Kelman expects home prices to drop next year, as listings are up and sellers are cutting prices. AdvertisementHouse prices may be headed lower, dealing a blow to sellers but providing relief to buyers, two experts say. The housing market ground to a halt this year, as the Federal Reserve's inflation-fighting hikes to interest rates have boosted mortgage rates to two-decade highs. "I don't expect the housing market to come roaring back here, certainly not in 2024," he said.

It was a remarkable journey for Australia, who began their campaign with back-to-back defeats yet still finished with the 50-overs World Cup in their arms for the sixth time. Shakib had already caused controversy over his appeal that led to Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews becoming the first player in international cricket to be 'timed-out'. Cummins, for one, had no doubts about the stature of the original World Cup. "I think it's the pinnacle of international cricket," said Cummins, who was part of Australia's victorious 2015 squad. AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — Australia won the Cricket World Cup for a record-extending sixth time Sunday, ending India’s dominant run in its home tournament with a six-wicket victory in a low-scoring final on the back of Travis Head’s 137. A heavily pro-Indian crowd inside the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium was silenced as Head combined with Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out ) in a 192-run partnership to chase down the target of 241. Head was dismissed off what proved to be the next-to-last ball of the match, caught in the deep while attempting to hit a title-clinching boundary. In came Glenn Maxwell and he ran two off his first ball, securing a victory that prompted fireworks above the world’s largest cricket venue. Australia finished the tournament with a run of nine straight wins, after starting with back-to-back defeats to India and South Africa.

The enormous income gap between workers and executives is a much more relevant factor in the lopsidedness of wealth distribution. The aging population is depicted as carefree, golf-playing, medically fit scammers living off struggling young wage earners. Social Security earnings are based on wages earned in a lifetime. The solution is not to raise the age limit for retirement but to eliminate the maximum taxable income for Social Security, currently $160,200. And to the authors, please stop finding ways to divide the young and the old.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — How science textbooks in Texas address climate change is at the center of a key vote expected Friday after some Republican education officials criticized books for being too negative toward fossil fuels in America's biggest oil and gas state. Science standards adopted by the board's conservative majority in 2021 do not mention creationism as an alternative to evolution. But some Republicans on the 15-member board this week waved off current textbook options as too negative toward fossil fuels and for failing to include alternatives to evolution. Scientists overwhelmingly agree that heat-trapping gases released from the combustion of fossil fuels are pushing up global temperatures, upending weather patterns and endangering animal species. She said their organization had identified only two textbooks that would not meet the standards set in 2021.
