Former President Donald Trump has delivered a barrage of lies and distortions about the federal response to Hurricane Helene. While various misinformation about the response has spread widely without Trump’s involvement, the Republican presidential nominee has been one of the country’s leading deceivers on the subject. The chief targets of his hurricane-related dishonesty have been Vice President Kamala Harris, his opponent in the November presidential election, and President Joe Biden. Kemp told reporters that he had successfully called Biden right back. Kemp added: “He just said, ‘Hey, what do you need?’ And I told him, you know, ‘We got what we need.

The United States is experiencing yet another divisive campaign season, but there may be a place where Americans can find calm and camaraderie: a vice presidential debate. "Saturday Night Live" followed up a historic, Season 50 premiere with more satire as Tuesday's debate between nominees for vice president, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, and Democratic Gov. The "SNL" recreation had repertory player Heidi Gardner playing CBS News' Norah O'Donnell, who introduced the running mates. Walz, played by comedian Jim Gaffigan, is a former teacher and high school football coach tapped by Vice President Kamala Harris (Maya Rudoph) as her Democratic running mate. Vance (Bowen Yang) was asked by debate cohost Margaret Brennan (Chloe Fineman) how he'd address the crisis in the Middle East.

Trump's campaign blamed the media for the renewed focus on January 6. "Did Kamala Harris censor Americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 COVID situation?" Harris' campaign soon cut what Walz described as Vance's "damning non-answer" into an attack ad. One boy, who is 12, was charged with second-degree gang assault, and the other, a 13-year-old, was charged with third-degree gang assault, the police said on Saturday night. Both boys, accompanied by their parents, turned themselves in to the police, according to Sean Darcy, a spokesman for Mr. Paterson. A third person, also a minor, went to the police but was not charged in the Friday night attack in Manhattan, according to an internal police report. Mr. Paterson, 70, said at a news conference on Saturday that he was punched in the shoulder and several times in the face, while his stepson Anthony Sliwa, 20, was knocked to the ground and needed stitches to his lower lip.

The storm is quickly strengthening, already boasting winds of 65 mph, according to an update Sunday morning from the National Hurricane Center. It is forecast to intensify into a hurricane by Sunday night — and a major hurricane by late Monday. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be issued for parts of the western Florida coast on Sunday — with dangerous storm surge expected for some areas just slammed by Helene. “This is something that potentially would be greater power outages than what we just saw with Hurricane Helene,” the governor said, noting the state’s residents still have a couple of days to get ready. Elon Musk is joining Donald Trump for a rally in Pennsylvania. Musk has become one of Trump's most prominent supporters. As president-elect in late 2016, Trump announced Musk would join his economic advisory board, but Musk would later cut ties with the administration over disagreements on climate change policies. At a Trump rally, Trump called Musk a "bullshit artist," after which Musk suggested Trump should not run for president again. Trump retaliated, saying Musk would be "worthless" without government subsidies and that Trump previously could have made Musk beg on his knees for government support.

Buttigieg was replying to a post from Musk that falsely claimed the Federal Aviation Administration was shutting down airspace in the disaster zone and "throttling" flights transporting supplies. An FAA spokesperson told CNBC, "There are no airspace restrictions in place in North Carolina as rescue efforts continue because of Hurricane Helene. And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, but one that they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade and tested for the past six months. Days later, the Michigan state party chairman also plugged 10xVotes when he rolled into Traverse City, Michigan, alongside Trump running mate JD Vance. But rather than courting those voters, Trump’s campaign is in search of new ones. Trump’s campaign has also tried to seize on discord within the Democratic coalition.
