June 13 (Reuters) - Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios's comeback match following a five-month injury layoff ended in defeat after he was beaten 7-5 6-3 by China's Wu Yibing in the opening round of the Stuttgart Open on Tuesday. The 28-year-old Australian underwent surgery on a knee injury in January and had not competed this season. He was forced to delay his comeback and missed the French Open due to a foot injury he sustained during the theft of his car last month. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY SportsJune 13 (Reuters) - A day after Novak Djokovic won his 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open, Serbia had another sporting hero to celebrate on Monday when Nikola Jokic was named Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals after leading the Denver Nuggets to a first championship. "It's got to be," smiled Jokic, when asked if this was the golden era for Serbian athletes. Jokic was the clear choice to win the Bill Russell Trophy as the NBA Finals MVP after the Serbian big man averaged 30.2 points, 14.0 rebounds and 7.2 assists. The 41st pick in the 2014 NBA draft, Jokic becomes the lowest-drafted player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP and the first player drafted outside of the top 15 to win the award.

Haddad Maia first Brazilian to reach WTA top 10
  + stars: | 2023-06-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, June 12 (Reuters) - Beatriz Haddad Maia became the first Brazilian woman to reach the top 10 of the WTA rankings on Monday following her dream run to the semi-finals of the French Open. The 27-yaer-old beat Tunisia's Ons Jabeur in the last eight in Paris to become the first Brazilian woman in 55 years to reach a Grand Slam semi-final. Brazilian women's has had precious little success since the days of Maria Bueno who claimed seven Grand Slam titles between 1959 and 1966 -- long before the advent of the WTA rankings which were introduced in 1975. Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten reached number one in the men's ATP rankings in 2000. Haddad Maia will take a ranking of 10 into the grasscourt season in which she impressed last year and will feature in this week's Nottingham Open as build-up to Wimbledon begins.

PARIS—Most of Novak Djokovic’s opponents on a tennis court never see an opening to beat him. But a select few, usually ranked among the top 10 players in the world, carve out a chance. They briefly muscle Djokovic onto the ropes and test his 36-year-old legs. Some even take a set or two.

If Djokovic could wait this long to hold this record, he certainly could wait for the half-hour or so it took to straighten out his strokes in the French Open final. He has won 10 trophies at the Australian Open, seven at Wimbledon and three at the U.S. Open. Djokovic came close to pulling off that feat in 2021, when he won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon and made it all the way to the title match at the U.S. Open before losing to Daniil Medvedev. This was the third Slam final in the past five events for Ruud, a 24-year-old from Norway, but he is now 0-3. He lost to Nadal at the French Open a year ago and to Alcaraz at the U.S. Open last September.

Many of those "visitors", however, failed to take their seats. Several women's matches were played in front of half-empty stands, making for poor footage as TV cameras hovered above the stadium. A year before the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the French federation's (FFT) stands were almost empty throughout a women's doubles wheelchair semi-final. And if a match is boring, and I've seen some and will not name and shame, you might want to go and see another match," FFT president Gilles Moretton told reporters on Sunday. "We can do better on the night matches," Mauresmo said without elaborating.

Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud in the French Open final. Clive Mason/Getty ImagesIt is not just the grand slam records that he now holds. Victory at this year’s French Open moves him back to his familiar spot of world No.1. He also became the oldest ever French Open champion. After coming so close to landing a blow during the long opening set, Ruud seemed deflated when he walked back onto court and lost the opening three games.

On an historic day on Court Philippe Chatrier, Djokovic won his 21st consecutive Grand Slam tournament match to become the only man to capture each of the four majors - Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open - at least three times. "Obviously a Grand Slam is a Grand Slam," Djokovic said. "It's no coincidence that I won the 23rd Grand Slam here in Paris, because this tournament was really in my entire career the toughest to win. Victory meant Djokovic has won the first two Grand Slams in a year for a third time after similar runs in 2016 and 2021. "Another day, another record and another day you rewrite tennis history," Ruud said, addressing a beaming Djokovic.

PARIS, June 11 (Reuters) - Casper Ruud has now lost the three Grand Slam finals he has played, but the Norwegian believes he has earned something at the French Open this year - the respect of his peers. Ruud lost 7-6(1) 6-3 7-5 against Novak Djokovic in his second straight final at Roland Garros on Sunday as the Serbian claimed a record-breaking 23rd men's Grand Slam title. "Obviously anyone you play in a Grand Slam final is going to be a good player. I played very tough players, as you say," the 24-year-old Ruud said. Ruud, however, can look ahead with some confidence as his consistency is likely to give him another shot at a Grand Slam title.

Novak Djokovic reached the top of the tennis mountain on Sunday, dominating Casper Ruud in straight sets to win the French Open men’s singles title for a third time and so much more. With the most momentous championship of his remarkable career so far, Djokovic has staked his claim to being the greatest male tennis player in history, with a record 23 Grand Slam tournament singles titles. Djokovic defeated Ruud, 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5. On his second match point, Djokovic induced Ruud into a final forehand off the court and collapsed on his back. “I feel I have the power to create my own destiny,” Djokovic said from the podium during the trophy celebration.

Djokovic reaped the rewards of spending time with another major figure in his life, Jelena Gencic, who he called his 'tennis mother', with Pilic being the 'father'. His parents, Srdan and Dijana, were former skiers but had no tennis background, and Djokovic was grateful that they took a leap of faith with him. "He never played tennis.

For more than a year that has been Swiatek’s signature, and it’s exactly what she did to Muchova on Saturday. There was a time two years ago when she was among the most creative players in the world. Now Swiatek doesn’t build winning points as much as she seizes them, going for winners with her big, rolling forehand at the first opportunity. Swiatek had her first break of Muchova’s serve and the lead after just seven minutes. She led 6-2, 3-0 after an hour, while Muchova was still trying to find her footing.

PARIS, June 10 (Reuters) - Pressure will be immense on Sunday when Novak Djokovic faces Casper Ruud in the French Open final with a record-breaking 23rd men's Grand Slam title and his position in the pantheon of tennis at stake. In 2021, Djokovic was on the brink of completing a calendar slam -- winning all four majors in the same year -- but was beaten in straight sets in the final in New York by Daniil Medvedev. "You remember the U.S. Open final he had with Medvedev after beating me in the semis still. "I put myself in another really ideal position to win a Grand Slam," said Djokovic, who will also snatch the world number one spot from Spain's Alcaraz if he lifts the Musketeers Cup. With the fickle French Open crowd often backing the underdog, Djokovic might face a few jeers, but he could not care less.

CNN —Iga Świątek won her third French Open in four years with a 6-2 5-7 6-4 victory against the unseeded Karolína Muchová in the women’s final on Saturday. For much of the match, it seemed as if the world No.1 would dominate in the same fashion as she had done to win her other three grand slam titles. After all, Świątek had never lost a set in a grand slam final and she began by displaying all the power and consistency that has made her such a force on clay ever since she won her first French Open title as a 19-year-old in 2020. A set up, and with a 3-0 lead in the second set, Świątek was cruising to victory but Muchová began finding her rhythm, making shots that had previously flown wide or collapsed into the net, and seemingly breaking the Pole at will. After Świątek somehow lost the second set, the match lost any semblance of shape in the third, as break followed break and both players scrabbled for that decisive moment that could carry them to a title at Roland Garros.

Now, with Federer retired and Nadal injured, Djokovic has an opportunity to stake his own claim in that unending debate and win a record 23rd grand slam title on Sunday at the French Open, surpassing the mark he currently holds with Nadal. Standing in Djokovic’s way is Casper Ruud, who has now reached three of the last five grand slam finals, including last year’s final at Roland Garros where he was dismantled 6-3 6-3 6-0 by Nadal. If Djokovic can win on Sunday, he will also return to the top of the world rankings and become the first male player to win each grand slam tournament at least three times. Casper Ruud was defeated by Nadal in last year's French Open final. That semifinal performance will galvanize Ruud ahead of the final, as he seeks to upset the odds and take a first grand slam title.
