CNN —For any Republican presidential candidate not named Donald Trump, making the first primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee is an essential obstacle to overcome. The Republican National Committee set minimum viability requirements that numerous candidates are having trouble meeting. But the FEC – which is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans – often struggles to agree on enforcement actions. But that perhaps is not surprising – given how large Trump, his former boss-turned-nemesis, looms over the hard-core Republican base. How is Trump making money these days?

Long-shot GOP presidential candidate Mayor Francis Suarez is campaigning off of international soccer superstar Lionel Messi's Major League Soccer debut. He's raffling off front-row tickets to the game to anyone who donates to his campaign. He's one of several GOP candidates utilizing creative tactics to increase their donor numbers. In order to make it to the GOP presidential debate stage, the Republican National Committee stipulates that a candidate must have received at least 40,000 unique donations with at least 200 unique donors coming from 20 or more states. Suarez's ticketing raffle isn't the first creative stunt that GOP presidential candidates have used this go-around to try and qualify for the GOP debate.

Mike Pence said it's "challenging" to reach the Republican National Committee's debate stipulations. Some GOP presidential candidates are offering kickbacks in exchange for campaign donations to qualify for the debate. But even with his own troubles, on Tuesday morning he mocked his rival Republican candidates for offering kickbacks in exchange for donations. "We're not offering gift cards, we're not offering kickbacks, we're not offering tickets to soccer games. According to a New York Times report from July 14, he has still yet to qualify for the GOP presidential debate in August.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams arrives for a press conference on gun violence at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner on June 26, 2023 in New York City. New York City mayor Eric Adams has reportedly pledged to correct his annual financial disclosure form filed with the Conflicts of Interest Board, after failing to report his cryptocurrency holdings. It is unclear how much Adams' crypto holdings are worth. Miami mayor Francis Suarez's progressive crypto policies drew start-ups, venture firms, and crypto exchanges to Florida during the pandemic. In a similar disclosure by Suarez, the Miami mayor reported crypto holdings of $71,321 at the end of 2022, according to documents obtained by The Miami Herald via the county elections department.

At events for Mr. DeSantis in the early nominating states, some voters have said that they wish the much younger Mr. DeSantis would run on the same ticket as Mr. Trump. “DeSantis is four years too early,” said Jim Mai, a Republican voter in the crowd for a speech Mr. DeSantis gave in Sioux Center, Iowa, in May. “Trump should run and have DeSantis as his vice president.”But a joint ticket between the two Florida men would prove logistically challenging. So if Mr. Trump picked Mr. DeSantis, or another Florida resident like Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami, who is also in the race, he would forfeit the state’s 30 electoral votes. One solution: Mr. Trump, who switched his residency to Florida ahead of the 2020 election, could change it back to New York.

Threads is integrated into Instagram, giving it potential access to roughly two billion monthly active users. Threads isn’t available in the European Union, where privacy watchdogs have long been concerned with how Meta handles users’ information. Being big doesn’t run afoul of antitrust law. Leveraging them to enhance the quality of Threads would not in and of itself violate antitrust laws, Mr. Melamed said. “The Threads example shows that big tech companies can also be valuable entrants, bringing new competitive pressure,” Mr. Francis said.

DUBAI, July 3 (Reuters) - Pope Francis said the burning of the Muslim holy book, the Koran, has made him angry and disgusted and that he condemned and rejected permitting the act as a form of freedom of speech. "Any book considered holy should be respected to respect those who believe in it," the pope said in an interview in the United Arab Emirates newspaper Al Ittihad, published on Monday. "Freedom of speech should never be used as a means to despise others and allowing that is rejected and condemned." While Swedish police have rejected several recent applications for anti-Koran demonstrations, courts have over-ruled those decisions, saying they infringed freedom of speech. MILAN, July 2 (Reuters) - Papal envoy Cardinal Matteo Zuppi said on Sunday his mission to Moscow on the Ukraine war was focused on humanitarian issues and had not involved any discussions of a peace plan. Pope Francis had in May asked Zuppi, head of the Italian bishops' conference, to carry out a peace mission to try to help end the war in Ukraine. There is not a peace plan, not a mediation", Zuppi told state broadcaster RAI. On the same day, a Vatican statement said the visit was "aimed at identifying humanitarian initiatives, which could open roads to peace". During his Sunday blessing, Francis called on pilgrims to keep praying for peace, "even during summer time and especially for Ukrainian people".

A Vatican statement on Saturday said Francis had chosen fellow Argentine Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez to be the head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF). The powerful post of DDF prefect was held by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger for 23 years before he became Pope Benedict in 2005. "The kiss is a meeting of the two in a moment in which there is nothing else besides them, and nothing else matters," Fernandez wrote in the book. The Vatican did not mention the book in the partial list of his publications it issued with the appointment announcement. Despite a recent global pledge to reach zero deforestation by 2030, tropical forest loss last year exceeded 2021 levels. Global Forest Watch assessed 'primary forests', which includes mature forests that have not been cleared or regrown in recent history. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Bolivia suffered the greatest losses of tropical forest after Brazil. The Global Forest Watch analysis found deforestation in 2022 was more than 10,000 sq km (3,900 sq miles) in excess of what would be needed to halt it by 2030. The world lost 10% less forest in 2022 than 2021, as fewer big fires burned in the Russian boreal forest, though the country still lost 43,000 sq km (16,600 sq miles) of tree cover last year.

Tree Loss Increases in Crucial Tropical Forests
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( Manuela Andreoni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
More than a year after countries pledged to end deforestation by 2030, the world is continuing to lose its tropical forests at a fast pace, according to a report issued on Tuesday. It is the first assessment to cover a full year since November 2021, when 145 countries pledged at a global climate summit in Glasgow to halt forest loss by the end of this decade. “We had hoped by now to see a signal in the data that we were turning the corner on forest loss,” Francis Seymour, a senior fellow at the institute’s forest program, said. “We don’t see that signal yet, and in fact we’re headed in the wrong direction.”The report, done in collaboration with the University of Maryland, documented tree loss in the tropics from deforestation, fires and other causes. Last year’s destruction resulted in 2.7 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions, a significant amount that is roughly equivalent to the annual fossil fuel emissions of India, a country of 1.4 billion.

There are, as of Saturday, at least 13 people running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination: former President Donald Trump; his U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, his vice president, Mike Pence; Gov. Instead, Republicans are studiously focused on the fever dreams and preoccupations of right-wing media swamps while showing an almost total indifference to the real world. In the worst-hit areas, such as New York City, public health officials urged residents to either stay inside or use masks when venturing outdoors. And this is on top of emissions produced by cars and other vehicles in an economy that still runs on fossil fuels. For many Americans, in other words, it takes little more than a glance outside the window to see a major problem of national consequence.

While all of the candidates gave a nod to the “pro-life” movement, some stopped short of supporting Sen. Lindsey Graham’s, R-S.C., proposal for a 15-week federal abortion ban, which he has called on the GOP presidential candidates to support.
