The United Auto Workers union has once again escalated its strikes against big Detroit automakers, this time adding a factory that makes Ram pickup trucks for Stellantis. No progress was reported with Ford, which last week said it had the best offer of the three. The union went on strike Sept. 15 at one assembly plant from each company. PARIS, Oct 21 (Reuters) - France will struggle to bring down its budget deficit to 2.7% by 2027 without "a little more effort," the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund said on Saturday. Reforms that the government has put in place such as on pensions and unemployment "will bear fruit and help (...) with the budgetary situation in France, but it needs a bit more unfortunately," Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas told France Inter. In its 2024 budget, the French government is aiming to reduce debt and to make 16 billion euros in savings. On Wednesday, the government pushed revenue legislation in the 2024 budget bill through the lower house of parliament using special constitutional powers to bypass a lawmakers' vote, after failing to gain enough support. The spending side of the budget bill, which is to be examined by lawmakers starting next week, includes plans for 16 billion euros in savings, with 10 billion coming from the end of gas and power price caps.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 17 (Reuters) - A stand-off between France and Germany over the future competitiveness of their industries will be the central point of discussion when EU energy ministers meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday, EU diplomats said. The new rules seek to protect consumers from volatile fossil fuel markets with a shift to more long-term, fixed-price contracts. Berlin fears that France, with its vast nuclear fleet, will be able to offer such contracts to its existing nuclear energy fleet - then use excess revenues generated by these contracts on subsidising industries. Central and eastern European countries that have nuclear expansion ambitions of their own are backing France. Spain, which holds the EU presidency until the year-end, has tried to find a compromise and at one point suggested axing article 19b entirely.

France's Pernod and Coke said on Monday the Absolut & Sprite canned cocktail will be launched in select European markets, including Britain, the Netherlands and Spain, from early 2024.
