HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — A Minnesota horticulture teacher remained the reigning champion Monday of an annual pumpkin-weighing contest in Northern California where his massive gourds have won the top prize four years in a row. Travis Gienger, of Anoka, Minnesota, beat his closest competitor by 6 pounds to clinch the victory at the 51st World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. His winning gourd came in at 2,471 pounds, falling short of the world record he set last year with a pumpkin weighing 2,749 pounds. “We had really, really tough weather and somehow, some way, I kept on working,” Gienger said. A National Geographic documentary crew may have found partial remains of the foot of Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, the famed mountaineer who disappeared on Mount Everest 100 years ago. The climbers were trekking Everest in late September when they spotted a disembodied foot inside of a boot that appeared perfectly preserved yet undeniably old. It is not known whether the pair ever reached the summit — an important Everest mystery among climbers and historians alike. Fisher’s documentary team, which included photographer and director Jimmy Chin and filmmaker Erich Roepke, came across the boot while exploring the Central Rongbuk Glacier on the northern side of Mount Everest. “We haven’t done DNA tests yet, so we can’t 100% say with certainty that this is indeed Irvine’s boot, but like I said, the nameplate is perfectly stitched on there.

That includes researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who are developing a set of wearable robotic limbs to help astronauts recover from falls. When the wearer falls over, an extra pair of limbs can extend out to provide leverage to help them stand, conserving energy for other tasks. Because of higher costs, employers are considering new ways to adjust their plan offerings, WTW found. Currently, employers subsidize about 81% of health-care plan costs, on average, while employees pay the remainder, according to professional services firm Aon. But mortgage rates are expected to go down next year, so it could be worth waiting if you aren't in a rush. 5-Year Mortgage Rate TrendsHere's how 30-year and 15-year mortgage rates have trended over the last five years, according to Freddie Mac data. Mortgage rates are determined by a variety of different factors, including larger economic trends, Federal Reserve policy, your state's current mortgage rates, the type of loan you're getting, and your personal financial profile. But now that inflation has decelerated and the Fed is expected to cut rates soon, mortgage rates have trended down. This means your entire monthly mortgage payment, including taxes and insurance, shouldn't exceed 28% of your pre-tax monthly income.

The education gap grows“The biggest single, best predictor of how someone’s going to vote in American politics now is education level. The real swing votersTo the extent that traditional swing voters are persuadable in this election, Sosnik argued they might be people like political independents or Nikki Haley Republicans. But there’s a second group of swing voters Sosnik argued is even more important. For Trump, these are non-college-educated White voters in general, particularly men, who “if they vote, you know they’re going to vote for Trump,” he said. Young voters, who are less reliable to cast ballots, also fall into this second type of swing voters, Sosnik said.

Oil prices fall by more than $1 on deflation worries in China
  + stars: | 2024-10-14 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices fell by more than $1 a barrel, losing over 1.5% in early trading on Monday, after disappointing Chinese inflation data and a lack of clarity on Beijing's economic stimulus plans stoked fears about demand. In the U.S. market, energy firms last week added oil and natural gas rigs for the first time in four weeks, according to a closely followed report by energy services firm Baker Hughes. The oil and gas rig count, an early indicator of future output, rose by one to 586 in the week to Oct. 11. The impact of Hurricane Milton boosted short-term demand in the U.S. as evacuations supported gasoline consumption, but weak demand dominated the fundamentals outlook. Oil major BP posted a $600 million drop in its third-quarter profit on Friday because of weak refining margins amid a slowdown in global oil use.

Woman killed by malfunctioning ottoman bed

London CNN —A 39-year-old British woman was killed when a malfunctioning ottoman bed fell on her neck and asphyxiated her, a coroner’s report said. Ottoman beds have a base that can be raised – usually using gas-lift hydraulics – to access a storage space underneath. The mattress platform on Davey’s bed fell unexpectedly, “trapping her neck against the upper surface of the side panel of the bed’s base,” Chipperfield explained. I dropped everything that I was holding and tried to lift the top of the bed off her head. The bed was no longer a soft close and could fall heavily if it was released.
