The effect of pay transparency laws on states
  + stars: | 2024-11-13 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The net effect for employers and employeesWhile only a minority of states require employers to provide pay transparency, their laws are having a domino effect on employers across the United States. “The majority of top-performing organizations (57%) embrace pay transparency and share pay ranges even when not required by law,” Payscale’s report noted. How pay transparency is helping individualsWhile there are federal laws prohibiting wage discrimination based on gender and other protected classifications, most states also have their own pay equity laws on the books. Wieselthier considers pay transparency laws a subset of pay equity because they provide a tool people can use to ensure they’re being paid fairly. “The whole purpose of pay transparency laws is to empower the candidates to negotiate,” Seikaly said.

Reuters —Satellite TV provider DirecTV said on Tuesday it will abandon its planned acquisition of EchoStar’s satellite television business that includes Dish TV by Nov. 22 if bondholders don’t agree to a debt exchange. “A successful exchange was a condition for acquiring the Dish video business,” a DirecTV spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement. “Given the outcome of the EchoStar exchange, DirecTV will have no choice but to terminate the acquisition of Dish by midnight on Nov. 22.”EchoStar and Dish did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. As part of the two-step transaction, DirecTV was to pay $1 to buy the pay TV business called Dish DBS that includes Dish and Sling TV, while agreeing to assume about $9.75 billion of Dish’s debt. Dish and DirecTV launched an exchange offer at a discounted rate for the debt to help extend the maturities.

New York CNN —Larry Summers has some unsolicited advice for President-elect Donald Trump: Don’t keep your campaign promises — unless you want to send prices skyrocketing once again. “If he carries through on what he said during his campaign, there will be an inflation shock significantly greater than the one the country suffered in 2021,” Summers told Kate Bolduan on CNN News Central on Wednesday. “I hope that he will get the message from this election and adjust his programs so that it’s not inflationary,” Summers told CNN. “In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs against China that created jobs, spurred investment, and resulted in no inflation,” Karoline Leavitt, a Trump transition spokesperson, said in a statement. Amid a presidential loss and hand-wringing over the wreckage, congressional gains for Democrats in New York state are one of the small bright spots shining out from the party’s bleak results. The Democratic Party lost five competitive House races in this blue state two years ago — the exact margin by which they lost the House majority. The annual U.N. climate summit began on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan, with many country delegations concerned that Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5 will hinder progress to limit planetary warming. Trump has promised to again remove the United States, the world’s most significant historic greenhouse gas emitter, from international climate cooperation and maximize the country’s already record-high fossil fuel production. “For those of us dedicated to climate action, last week’s outcome in the United States is obviously bitterly disappointing,” Podesta said at the summit. “Let’s dispense with the idea that climate finance is charity,” he said at the Baku stadium. “An ambitious new climate finance goal is entirely in the self-interest of every nation, including the largest and wealthiest.”This year is on track to be the hottest on record.

Among other findings, it warns that several key climate tipping points appear more likely to be reached than previously thought. Ice loss from the Thwaites Glacier, also known as the “Doomsday” glacier because its collapse could precipitate rapid Antarctic ice loss, may be unstoppable. These are just a few of the stark findings from more than 50 leading snow and ice scientists, which are detailed in a new report from the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative. The report highlights a shift in consensus: Scientists once thought tipping points — like the collapse of AMOC — were distant or remote possibilities. Even if they were on track, those commitments are insufficient to reach global climate goals, the authors say.
