US stocks had one of their best days in years and hit new records after Trump's resounding win over Kamala Harris in Tuesday's election. Both of those moves make sense, said David Kelly, the global strategy chief at JPMorgan Asset Management, in an interview on Wednesday. AdvertisementThe strategy chief has been adamant that higher tariffs — one of Trump's key proposals — would cripple the US economy and endanger the global economic expansion. Related storiesMost economists condemn tariffs, which are taxes on imports, because they tend to lead to higher prices and lower economic growth. Sean Gallagher, the global head of Lazard's small-cap equity platform, made a similar point in a recent interview with Business Insider when asked about Trump's tariffs and Kelly's stance.

But after a strong October, TTWO appears to be setting up for a significant breakout that yields a healthy upside price target. After reaching a peak of around $170 in early February, the stock pulled back to just below its 200-day moving average. We can determine an initial upside target simply by measuring the price range of the basing pattern, in this case from $140 to $170. That 61.8% retracement sits right around $167, forming the upper end of the price range we outlined on the daily chart. So a breakout above $170, while an important signal on the daily chart based on the basing pattern, also represents a significant break above a major Fibonacci retracement level.

Our NFL writers addressed these topics and more in making one prediction for every team heading into the season’s second half. The fourth-year back is on pace to finish with 1,256 yards, which would be the fourth-highest total in team history. Every other NFL team has put a player in at least one of those categories during that stretch — and most teams have checked both boxes. Minnesota has one of the most productive defenses in the NFL and an offense loaded at the skill positions. And the Eagles have managed to win games despite bad luck and bad decisions.

Gavin Newsom, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, on Thursday called for lawmakers to convene a special session later this year to safeguard the state’s progressive policies on climate change, reproductive rights and immigration ahead of another Trump presidency. The move — a day after the former president resoundingly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race — effectively reignited California’s resistance campaign against conservative policies that state Democratic leaders started during the first Trump administration. California’s move is part of a growing discussion among Democratic state officials across the country seeking to protect policies that face threats under Trump’s leadership. Newsom and Democratic lawmakers said they are acting now to shield the state’s policies that have made it a leader in the nation. “He wants to be seen as a political revivalist, and so that puts him front and center,” McCuan said.

Trump defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, and Republicans claimed a majority of the Senate in elections this week. "We know kind of where the world is headed in a Trump environment because we've seen it before," said Jeffrey Solomon, president of TD Cowen, on CNBC's "Money Movers" Wednesday. One M&A advisor, who also spoke to CNBC anonymously, noted that Trump's disdain for Big Tech companies — historically active deal-makers — might keep them on the sidelines. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. That advisor noted that smaller banks had been getting gobbled up for "some time," but that the pace and size of those acquisitions would likely ramp up under a Trump presidency.

Trump’s win came about with the help of Musk and his wealthy tech friends including investors Peter Thiel and David Sacks. They boosted Trump with financial contributions, fundraising help and public endorsements on subjects such as the economy and deregulation. Few other major tech executives publicly endorsed in the presidential race, though some of them made vague comments praising one or the other candidate. Trump has a complicated history with many tech CEOs. In their social media posts, several tech CEOs used the word “decisive” to describe Trump’s victory and they employed popular buzzwords like “innovation” in an apparent attempt to identify common ground.

Next door in the 7th District, GOP state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie defeated Democratic Rep. Susan Wild, who had flipped a GOP seat in a 2018 special election. Republicans also flipped an open seat in Michigan’s 7th District, after Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin decided to run for the Senate. Because California is notoriously slow in counting ballots, some of the half-dozen hyper-competitive races there — critical to which party wins the House majority — likely will take days. In the 27th District, GOP Rep. Mike Garcia was narrowly beating Democrat George Whitesides with 65% of the vote in. In another California battleground race, NBC News projected Wednesday that GOP Rep. Major stock indexes soared Wednesday morning in the wake of Donald Trump's decisive victory in Tuesday's presidential election. The last time the Dow, which represents larger, more established firms, saw a 1,000-point jump in a single day was November 2022. NBC News is projecting that Trump will finish with 276 Electoral College votes in his defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent. Trump has promised to extend or enact sweeping tax cuts and deregulatory policies that are widely supported across the business community. That represents market pushback on one of Trump's key policy planks: A weaker dollar that would support U.S. exports.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won Maryland’s Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating popular former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and becoming the first Black woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. It also means that, for the first time in history, Maryland will have a Black senator, governor and mayor of its largest city, Baltimore. Hogan could never quite replicate the support he received from Democrats as governor in his Senate campaign. In Hogan, many Marylanders saw a Republican who represented an increasingly rare version of the party prior to Trump’s takeover.
