U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has authorized the military to reinforce its presence in the Middle East with "defensive" air-support capabilities and put other forces on a heightened readiness status, the Pentagon said on Sunday. "[Austin] increased the readiness of additional U.S. forces to deploy, elevating our preparedness to respond to various contingencies," Pentagon spokesman Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder said in a statement. The statement did not detail what new aircraft would be deploying to the region. "Secretary Austin made clear that should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every necessary measure to defend our people," Ryder added.

As Tehran watches its most prized non-state ally take a beating, questions are mounting about how it may respond. Israel then began an air assault that killed several Hezbollah commanders and led to the highest number of casualties in Lebanon in almost two decades. The Israeli military has claimed that Nasrallah has been killed, but Hezbollah is yet to comment on the matter. But it’s not an easy option as they will (become) targets, and they don’t understand Lebanon.”Under what circumstances would Iran intervene? This week however, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that his country would not remain “indifferent” if a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah erupted in Lebanon.

Earlier this summer, Roan also shared thoughts on her fandom after her meteoric rise, and certain people she felt have been invasive. CNN —The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to appear on New York’s presidential ballot even though he suspended his campaign last month and backed former President Donald Trump. The high court turned away Kennedy’s longshot appeal without comment and there were no noted dissents. I want you to vote for Donald J. Trump,” Kennedy said. It’s the second presidential ballot access appeal to reach the Supreme Court in recent weeks, underscoring the spoiler role third party and independent candidates can play in tight elections. On Friday, the Supreme Court denied an emergency request from the Green Party to ensure presidential candidate Jill Stein could appear on the ballot in the battleground state of Nevada.

CNN —Federal prosecutors say New York City Mayor Eric Adams engaged in a “long-running conspiracy,” accepting luxury travel and gifts from foreign businesspeople and at least one Turkish government official. Adams, who’s been indicted on five federal public corruption charges, has denied wrongdoing and says he is being targeted because of his positions. Federal agents search Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the mayor of New York City, on September 26, 2024, after Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on federal criminal charges. That Adams, a Democrat, has been charged by prosecutors in the Southern District of New York on corruption charges does not, on its own, disprove Trump’s point. Adams remains defiant in the face of the charges, but they are clearly having an effect on New York politics.

CNN —A New York appeals court is set to hear arguments Thursday in former President Donald Trump’s bid to have the $454 million civil fraud judgment against him dismissed. The appellate hearing is yet another legal development for Trump playing out the same time as his presidential campaign hits the homestretch. In addition to the civil fraud appeal, Trump’s lawyers have argued to dismiss the guilty verdict in the New York criminal case, the federal election interference case in Washington, DC, and the E. Jean Carroll defamation verdict – all in the past month. The judgment against Trump was for $354 million, with an additional $100 million in interest that had accrued when the judge’s ruling was issued in February. “The award of $464 million in a case with no victims, no proven injuries, and no losses is not remotely defensible,” Trump’s lawyers wrote.

It is the latest indignity for Giuliani, who has been shoved out of the legal profession after promoting conspiracy theories about the 2020 election following Donald Trump's election loss, and was previously disbarred in New York. The Washington, DC, Court of Appeals handed down the disbarment order with "reciprocal discipline," finding Giuliani was unable to show why the New York decision to take away his law license was wrong.

CNN first reported on the US law enforcement action. Ivanov and Shakhmametov are accused of helping run “carding” websites like Joker’s Stash that sell stolen credit and debit card information. The sites have advertised financial information stolen from tens of millions of Americans, according to US law enforcement. For years, Joker’s Stash was a dominant player in the Russian-speaking criminal underground. After US and European law enforcement agencies seized some computer servers used by Joker’s Stash, the forum said it was shutting down in 2021.

CNN —China’s newest nuclear-powered submarine sank pierside in the spring and the Chinese Navy tried to conceal the loss, according to two US defense officials. The attack submarine was the first of its new Zhou-class line of vessels, the official said, under construction at a shipyard near the city of Wuhan. “It’s not surprising that the PLA Navy would try to conceal the fact that their new first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine sank pierside,” said the senior US defense official. According to the latest China military power report from 2023, the PLA Navy operates six nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, six nuclear-powered attack submarines, and 48 diesel-powered attack submarines. CNN —Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is disbarred in Washington, DC, the district’s highest local court said Thursday, a move stemming from the ethics proceedings Giuliani faced in New York because of his efforts to help former President Donald Trump try to overturn the 2020 election. Those New York proceedings led to Giuliani losing his license to practice there this summer, and because the DC Bar has a reciprocal relationship with the New York Bar, he is now being disbarred in the district. According to the new order from the DC Court of Appeals, Giuliani did not respond to an opportunity to object to his disbarment in Washington. Meanwhile, two Georgia election workers obtained a $148 million defamation judgment against him for false allegations he made about them after the 2020 election. Hurricane Helene’s massive wind field was wide enough to stretch from Indianapolis to Washington, DC, and its huge size will result in higher storm surge and dangerous winds that stretch well inland. The storm is already lashing Florida as it continues to intensify and track north toward the Florida’s Big Bend. The hurricane unleashed its fury on parts of Mexico’s Yucátan Peninsula and Cuba Wednesday. Flooding rainfall plunged cars underwater in parts of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo while powerful ocean waves pounded the coastline. Helene’s strong winds also knocked out power to more than 50,000 people in western Cuba’s province of Pinar del Río.

Trump's arguments for overturning his $454M civil fraud verdict received a warm reception Thursday. Trump attorney D. John Sauer has made this line drawing a central point of his appeal. The appeal argues that James' fraud case wrongly interfered in the decisions of "sophisticated" banks that had been happy to loan Trump money regardless of any exaggerations. Deutsche Bank relied on Trump's financial statements in loaning him $400 million to develop his Chicago skyscraper, his Washington, DC hotel, and his Miami golf resort. Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun testifies before a subcommittee of the Senate Energy and National Resources Committee on the company's safety culture, following a number of recent incidents on Boeing airplanes, Washington, DC, June 18, 2024. A U.S. Senate panel investigating Boeing 's safety culture on Wednesday faulted the planemaker's quality practices and oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration citing documents obtained in an ongoing investigation. The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which is holding a hearing Wednesday with FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker, said Boeing workers continue to feel pressure to prioritize speed of production over quality. Boeing said it has "taken important steps to foster a safety culture that empowers and encourages all employees to share their voice, but it will require continuous focus." The FAA did not comment but Whitaker said at a House hearing Tuesday that Boeing needed to undertake significant safety culture improvements that might not be completed for years.
