Bottom line It was another terrific quarter from Salesforce with steady, double-digit revenue growth and a continued operating margin uplift, leading to a huge increase in earnings per share. Additionally, the topline growth story has some game to it, thanks to the surge in interest in its Data Cloud. By Cloud unit, the most exciting performance in the quarter came from the Data Cloud. Revenue growth accelerated to 22% from 16% in the prior quarter, and the company said it added 1,000 new customers in the quarter alone. Artificial intelligence is driving the interest in the Data Cloud, as more customers seek to use Mulesoft's integration technology to unlock data across legacy systems, cloud apps, and devices.

The tech giant said Tuesday it will launch Q — a business chatbot powered by generative artificial intelligence. San Francisco startup OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT a year ago sparked a surge of public and business interest in generative AI tools that can spit out emails, marketing pitches, essays, and other passages of text that resemble the work of humans. Amazon said Tuesday that Q can do things like synthesize content, streamline day-to-day communications and help employees with tasks like generating blog posts. It said companies can also connect Q to their own data and systems to get a tailored experience that's more relevant to their business. While Amazon is ahead of rivals Microsoft and Google as the dominant cloud computing provider, it’s not perceived as the leader in the AI research that’s led to advancements in generative AI.

Amazon on Tuesday announced a new chatbot called Q for people to use at work. The Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Duet AI for Google Workspace for business workers both cost $30 per person per month. As a result, with Q, people can discuss information that's stored in Microsoft 365, Dropbox, Salesforce and Zendesk, along with AWS' S3 data-storage service. Administrators will be able to determine whether Q can answer people's questions about general topics, said Deepak Singh, an AWS vice president. Bernstein thinks the two best stocks to do so are Microsoft and Adobe. "Within our coverage, MSFT , and ADOBE are best positioned to profitably leverage GenAI, as they control a big portion of their AI tech stack," wrote analyst Mark Moerdler in a Tuesday note. Both Microsoft and Adobe have benefitted in 2023 from enthusiasm around AI and its growing addressable market in the wake of ChatGPT's debut. Earlier this year, Microsoft debuted its Copilot, which brings AI capabilities to its Office suite for $30 a month . "While the $30/month price tag generates handsome profit for Microsoft, it might be hardly profitable for others who have to rent model as a service," he wrote.

Microsoft may have put out a five-alarm fire around its most important technology move in years. But fires leave scorch marks—and sometimes flare up again. A leadership crisis at Silicon Valley startup OpenAI over the weekend threatened to seriously singe the world’s second-largest company by market value. That is because OpenAI developed the key generative artificial-intelligence technology that has helped power Microsoft’s aggressive move into the field. Microsoft has invested a total of $13 billion into the company and already launched commercial products and services based on its technology, including a chatbot-enabled Bing search engine and a superpowered digital assistant called Copilot that can render emails, spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations.

Microsoft's (MSFT) bold move to hire ousted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman after days of chaos will help the software and cloud giant widen its lead in artificial intelligence. Greg Brockman, another OpenAI co-founder as well as its president and chairman, also departed and joined Altman to lead a new AI effort at Microsoft. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is a key AI partner of Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars in the startup. "A lot of people could be poached" from OpenAI, Jim speculated. Reception for Copilot, a generative AI tool for Microsoft 365 productivity apps, has also been very positive as well.

AdvertisementIf Sam Altman can't be convinced to return to OpenAI, Microsoft is in trouble. All of which means that the biggest loser if Altman can't be convinced to return isn't Altman. This OpenAI board is way over its head and the failed coup is now backfiring," investor Dan Ives, an analyst at Webush, told Business Insider. OpenAI only gave Microsoft a few minutes advance warning before announcing Altman's ouster, sources told Business Insider. Earlier this month the company made over 100 announcements of integrations with OpenAI tech across Microsoft's AI tools, AI models, tools in its cloud, the company told Business Insider.

The announcement left OpenAI and Microsoft workers "completely shocked," people inside both companies told Business Insider. Another shock came about an hour later when OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman announced that he had "quit" over Altman's ouster. Perhaps there were signs all was not well when it came to OpenAI's business, one Microsoft employee told BI, which Microsoft has reportedly backed to the tune of at least $10 billion. Microsoft is bringing its Copilot chatbot to Windows 10
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( Jordan Novet | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Microsoft said Thursday it will soon start testing the Copilot chatbot in an update to the widely used Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft on Oct. 31 started rolling out an update that features Copilot to Windows 11, its latest operating system. But among Windows PCs, Windows 11 has about 27% share, and Windows 10 leads with about 68%, according to StatCounter estimates. In Windows, Copilot can serve as "the everyday AI companion," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on an October conference call with analysts. It will be similar to the Copilot in Bing and won't be able to perform as many PC-related functions as the Copilot in Windows 11, because some elements of Windows 11 aren't present in Windows 10, Woodman said.

Thursday's early calls featured a retail upgrade and an EV charging stock downgrade. The analyst reiterated his buy rating and $450 price target on the stock. Microsoft's AI cybersecurity solution Security Copilot, which was only recently expanded through an early access program on Oct. 19, already has tons of pent-up interest, Thill said. The firm downgraded shares from neutral to underperform and lowered its price target on the stock by $17 to $43. He gave the stock a $50 price target — $13 higher from the previous one — which implies 23.1% upside for shares since Wednesday's close.

But Synopsys (SNPS.O) on Wednesday said it has worked with Microsoft to create its own Copilot to help with designing computer chips. Synopsys trained the system on huge troves of data it has accumulated over decades in business to help with that. "But if you're not generating (chip design work) that is over 99.9% accurate, you're introducing a bug in your chip, which is worth hundreds of millions of dollars." Fixing bugs is one of the lengthiest and costliest parts of the chip design process. Microsoft said it has already started to test the Synopsys system with its own chip design teams, which on Wednesday unveiled the company's first in-house data center chips.

Microsoft on Wednesday announced a slew of new capabilities coming to the Copilot artificial intelligence add-on for its Microsoft 365 productivity applications. There are concerns about whether Copilot for Microsoft 365 is worth $30 per person per month. Copilot will be able to create Teams chat messages and come up with tone changes. During Teams meetings, the Whiteboard tool can automatically create visualizations of ideas that people discuss. In PowerPoint, Copilot will be able to create slides that include AI-generated images based on brand assets, with the help of the Microsoft Designer app.

Microsoft said it does not plan to sell the chips but instead will use them to power its own subscription software offerings and as part of its Azure cloud computing service. Microsoft and other tech giants such as Alphabet are grappling with the high cost of delivering AI services, which can be 10 times greater than for traditional services such as search engines. The Maia chip, they said, is optimized for that work. Microsoft also said that next year it will offer its Azure customers cloud services that run on the newest flagship chips from Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Advanced Micro Devices. He said the Maia chip would allow Microsoft to sell AI services in the cloud until personal computers and phones are powerful enough to handle them.
