I moved from the US to South Korea in 2013, and there are some things I don't miss about America. Here are nine things I don't miss about living in the US. There's a large US military presence in South Korea, and many Americans have brought their tipping habits with them overseas. For example, in South Korea, I've seen candidates ride around in the bed of a truck blasting their campaign theme song. When I travel outside South Korea, I'm often stunned by the slow internet speeds and spotty public WiFi.

From coast to coast, the minimum wage is falling short of how much Americans need to comfortably afford average rent prices in major cities. The federal minimum wage has sat at $7.25 for the past 15 years. Fair market rent is based on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's fair market rent standard. Under this model, around 40% of similar units in the area rent for less than the listed fair market rental price and 60% rent for more. Here's how the minimum wage in 15 large U.S. cities compares with the hourly wage you'd actually need to earn in order to comfortably afford a one-bedroom dwelling at fair market price, per Clever Real Estate's data.

Carol Applebaum charges $125 an hour and helps her older clients downsize. "It'll be perfect for when she has a baby girl of her own," the woman told Applebaum. "Many parents long to pass down cherished possessions to their children, hoping to preserve family history and memories," Applebaum told Business Insider. If they gave into their guilt, the children felt obliged to take stuff they neither liked nor had room for. Applebaum, who charges $125 an hour for her services, said she is in an optimal position to understand all parties.

Expect the unexpected in Friday’s jobs report

In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.

By contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris's tax plan is expected to increase tax revenues by $1.7 trillion over 10 years, but at a cost of negative 2% to long-run GDP and 786,000 jobs. The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania estimates that, including her spending proposals, the primary deficits would increase by $1.2 trillion, and accounting for adverse economic feedback effects, primary deficits increase to $2 trillion. Higher deficits and higher debts, just with different paths to get there. One candidate proposes cutting taxes to improve economic activity but increase deficits, and the other proposes raising taxes and increasing spending by even more and growing deficits. If the deficit keeps increasing faster than our economy grows, so will the debt, inflation, and interest rates.

Starbucks wants to curb chaotic and complex mobile orders. CEO Brian Niccol announced that "common sense" guardrails will soon be put on app customizations. CEO Brian Niccol said the coffee chain will implement "common sense guardrails" on app orders in the coming months as part of the company's effort to separate the pick-up process from in-store orders. Mobile orders make up more than 30% of transactions at Starbucks stores, he said. Niccol said the company is also prioritizing a new sequencing algorithm that enables accurate pickup times for mobile orders to avoid overwhelming the cafés.

The Mary Rose was one of the largest warships of the Tudor navy during King Henry VIII’s reign until it sank on July 19, 1545, during a battle against the French. The Mary Rose was one of them, and the flagship became the king’s favorite. The hull of the Mary Rose, supported by a steel cradle attached to a lifting frame, was raised on October 11, 1982. The research team used Raman spectroscopy, a nondestructive method that preserves valuable samples, to study the bones, Shankland said. “Investigating the impact of this on the spine would further our understanding of bone chemistry changes with age, but also with stress from activity.”

Merck on Thursday reported third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped expectations as the company saw strong sales from its top-selling cancer drug Keytruda, recently launched treatments and its animal health business. But Merck's vaccine that prevents cancer from HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S., posted another quarter of lighter-than-expected sales. Revenue from the shot, Gardasil, fell 11% compared to the year-earlier period, mainly due to lower demand in China. The company booked $16.66 billion in revenue for the third quarter, up 4% from the same period a year ago. The loss of exclusive rights to the medicine will likely cause sales to fall, forcing the company to draw revenue from elsewhere.

While 27% of Democratic respondents publicly agreed with the statement "I support defunding the police," just 3% privately supported the movement. While 50% of Republicans publicly said "we live in a mostly fair society," just 11% privately agreed. Similarly, 2% of Republicans were thought to privately trust the government to tell the truth, while 14% said so publicly. A lack of social trust causes people to resent each other, look for scapegoats, and become susceptible to demagoguery, he said.

Property Brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott still believe in the opportunity to grow wealth through real estate investing, but there are important factors to consider in today's market, they told CNBC's Diana Olick at a recent CNBC Your Money event. "I absolutely do believe in homeownership as a good investment," Jonathan said. One of those key factors: Individuals should only invest in property on their own timeline, Jonathan said. "As soon as you're desperate to get into a property, you're going to make a bad decision." Buyer's remorse is common among recent homebuyers: 82% of people who bought homes in 2023 or 2024 have at least one regret, a recent survey from real estate company Clever found.

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday said she strongly disagrees with criticisms of groups of people based on the candidate they support. “President Biden was very clear that he’s speaking about the rhetoric we heard at that [rally] so it doesn’t undermine it," Walz said on "CBS Mornings." But now the organization is turning its attention (and its rats’ noses) to the global illegal wildlife trade. “Unfortunately, organized crime knows there’s a real weak spot in detection methods of ports, seaports and airports, particularly in Africa.”Traffickers disguise wildlife products in a whole host of ways, he explains. This is particularly important given that much of the illicit wildlife trade comes from some of the world’s poorest regions. “I’m hopeful that (using rats) for detecting wildlife will be a low cost, low impact, low footprint operation,” says Allan. The illegal wildlife trade not only impacts populations of the trafficked animal or plant, it can have devastating knock-on consequences for whole ecosystems.

Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, framed the effort in Virginia as a commonsense way of ensuring noncitizens don’t vote. At issue are about 1,600 voter registrations that Virginia said came from self-identified noncitizens but that a US District Court said hadn’t been fully vetted for citizenship status. Noncitizens are not allowed to vote in federal elections; none of the lower court rulings had changed that fact. But documented cases of noncitizens voting are extremely rare. Those opposed to the program relied on a 1993 law, the National Voter Registration Act, which bars states from making “systematic” changes to voting rolls with 90 days of a federal election.
