Video footage shows the moment a new Russian submarine test-fired an intercontinental-range ballistic missile. AdvertisementAdvertisementRussia's new strategic nuclear submarine has successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile, it's defense ministry said, releasing video footage it said was from the test. The test involved the firing of an intercontinental-range Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) and was a significant step for the vessel. Video footage from the defense ministry that was shared by Russian state media outlets on Sunday showed what they said was the newest Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine Imperator Alexander III launching an RSM-56 Bulava ballistic missile. Russia has lost as many vehicles in just three weeks of assaults as Ukraine lost over several months of fighting in the south. In vehicle losses, the Russian assault force has lost in just three weeks what Ukrainian troops lost over several months of intense fighting in the south. "GeoConfirmed characterized the Russian effort near Avdiivka as the costliest Russian effort thus far in the war in Ukraine," ISW wrote. It took Russia roughly three weeks fighting for Avdiivka to do the same. Avdiivka has been largely ruined by constant fighting, but the devastated area may not be entirely pointless to Russian forces, or Russian leadership.

Israeli forces mounted a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip in the early morning hours of October 28. AdvertisementAdvertisementAn advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of the ground invasion, telling MSNBC's Katy Tur on Friday that "tonight we are starting payback." Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel expects a long and difficult ground offensive into Gaza. Israel has said it aims to crush Hamas' rule in Gaza and its ability to threaten Israel. Though 120 countries, an overwhelming majority of the United Nations, voted Friday for a resolution to call for a "sustained humanitarian truce" in Gaza, Israel has so far refused international calls for a cease-fire.

Google Maps is expanding preexisting features and unveiling some new ones, according to a Thursday announcement. The company said artificial intelligence allowed for improvements to Google Maps' EV charging station feature, more specific recommendations of nearby activities and more in-depth visualization. New ways to search for things to doGoogle Maps is offering new ways for people to search for activities to do near them as well. Instead of getting a random list of activities near you, Google Maps will return a categorized list of activities grouped by topic. Russian troops continue their offensive in Avdiivka, in Ukraine's east, and surround some Ukrainian troops on three sides. A video shows a Russian flag near Avdiivka planted in a waste pile, but any small gain comes at a high cost. Experts at the The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) confirmed the advancements on Wednesday in geolocated footage but noted: "Russian forces largely claimed that Russian forces controlled the Avdiivka waste heap, as did a Ukrainian military observer. Ukrainian Avdiivka City Military Administration Head Vitaly Barabash denied claims that Russian forces control the Avdiivka waste heap and stated that the waste heap is a contested 'gray area.'"
