The holiday shopping season is upon us, and our retail stocks are well-positioned to thrive, according to Wall Street research firm Telsey Advisory Group. Telsey Advisory expects value-seeking to be a key theme among shoppers this year, which puts companies with reputations for good deals on solid ground. Overall, the firm expects holiday retail sales up between 3% to 3.5% this year, compared with 4.6% growth last year and a 5.4% increase in 2022. Costco has had a good year so far, and that should continue in the final months of 2024, Telsey Advisory argued. Big picture Telsey Advisory selecting these four Club stocks as preferred names this holiday season reflects their competitive chops within their respective categories.

Unlike younger generations, who until recently may have taken federal abortion protections for granted, older women recall the era of illegal backroom abortions that preceded Roe. A fight for the senior voteNot all older women are motivated by abortion. But in a race that is expected to be decided on the margins, boosting support among women and older voters could make a difference. There are some signs in early voting data that women seniors are highly motivated to vote, said Tom Bonier, a Democratic strategist and CEO of the data firm TargetSmart. Abortion bans in many states, including North Carolina, make exceptions for ectopic pregnancies, but patients have reported delays in care.

Lindsay Roselle transformed her view on motherhood after an ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Lindsay Roselle, a 42-year-old entrepreneur and mom from Colorado who attended an ayahuasca retreat and started microdosing psilocybin. Then in 2022, I was flying to a remote part of the Amazon for a three-day ayahuasca retreat, where I ingested a plant-based psychedelic used for medicinal, spiritual, and ceremonial purposes. My mom contributed to my negative idea of motherhoodGiving up my entrepreneurial career was never an option for me. This is something I've been looking forward to as I prepare to run my first marathon on November 3. So I consulted Jena Brown, a sports dietitian specializing in endurance racing, who reviewed my plan for the week and suggested improvements. She told me I should aim for roughly 8-12 grams of carbs a day per kilogram of my body weight. After my shorter runs this week, I got a berry smoothie with 55g carbs and 27g protein (from protein powder). Cut down on fiber, fat, and spiceI used regular, refined flour pasta and blended pesto with cottage cheese to make the sauce.

Welcome to the online version of From the Politics Desk, an evening newsletter that brings you the NBC News Politics team’s latest reporting and analysis from the campaign trail, the White House and Capitol Hill. The final undecided voters could sway the election. But in a narrowly divided presidential election, voters who have put off making a decision until the last minute could find themselves with the power to decide the future of the country. Late-deciding voters broke for Trump in 2020 and 2016, with some analysts and strategists in both campaigns crediting them for electing Trump eight years ago. And it was true in 2020, when the pandemic and debates played an oversize role in the election featuring Trump and Joe Biden.

In NBC News’ early October national survey, just 4% of registered voters said they didn’t want to make a choice between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. One said they plan to vote for Trump, another that they are likely to vote for Harris, and another plans to not vote at all. How anyone could still be undecided a week out from a critical election can be difficult to fathom for supporters of either Trump or Harris. Eric Bush, a systems administrator from Florida, said he’s waiting until he is in the voting booth to make his final choice. But he is still weighing backing Harris, acknowledging a vote for Harris could lead to bigger-government policies that could help others.

A way to get around this is to split the overall estate balance equally instead of divvying up individual assets, Snow recommended. You can also liquidate the business, which will convert business assets into cash quickly. AdvertisementSimilar to a family business, these assets might hold a lot of sentimental value but might not be easily passed down. Donating collections can be an effective way to circumvent capital gains and estate taxes. Walking pneumonia infections rose nationwide as kids returned to school this fall. Look out for a persistent cough, fever, and fatigueHistorically, walking pneumonia has been most common among school-aged children. People who've recently had the flu are also at increased risk for developing walking pneumonia. In rare cases, walking pneumonia can prompt brain swelling, kidney issues, and difficulty breathing, and people with lung issues, and weakened immune systems may be especially at risk of hospitalization with walking pneumonia. Without any testing, the daughter was diagnosed with walking pneumonia, and prescribed a Z-Pak (azithromycin).

Budget airlines like Spirit, Frontier, and Southwest are struggling to turn a profit. The still-in-service airlines Neeleman founded, like JetBlue Airways, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Canada's WestJet, and Breeze Airways, largely follow this idea. Historically, these strategies have been absent from the likes of Spirit, Frontier, and Southwest, which have stuck to all-economy aircraft with little choice. Southwest Airlines boats an open-seating policy where seats are first-co,me first-serve. Low-cost airlines should continue to ditch barebones planesSouthwest shouldn't be the only one to move away from historical norms.

Julian Quinones/CNNFormer Trump administration officials have outlined the speed at which they intend to dismantle the progress the Biden administration made on climate change. Trump has publicly distanced himself from the ideological blueprint, but CNN found at least 140 authors worked in the Trump administration. But given the momentum of the clean energy train, some experts and analysists doubt that Trump would be able to derail it entirely. While the green trend in economics now has Republican states like Texas leading the nation in clean energy installations, Germany, Japan and China got there first. Trump’s plan is to undo that progress, throw billions of dollars of clean energy investment out the window and give other countries the economic opportunity, instead.

Some airlines have bought Airbus' new extra-long-haul A321XLR to replace their aging Boeing 757s. That's about 800 miles further than its predecessor and at least 880 miles further than its closest competitor: the aging, out-of-production Boeing 757. Carriers like United Airlines and Icelandair are lining up for the new jet, putting in more than 550 orders so far. Continental Airlines, now United Airlines, switched its 757-300 order to the newer 737-800 in 2003, for example. Icelandair will also replace its 757 fleet with the A321XLR, abandoning the largely all-Boeing fleet it has operated for decades.

AdvertisementSummer is over, and this Sunday it's time to turn back the clocks, ending daylight-saving time for the year. "That's how fragile and susceptible your body is to even just one hour of lost sleep," sleep expert Matthew Walker, author of "How We Sleep," previously told Business Insider. Some lawmakers want permanent DST — others want standard time year-roundThe political debate over DST is fierce, unscientific, and deeply divided. In the 2018 midterms, voters opted to get rid of the annual clock change, to be in permanent daylight-saving time. Switching to permanent DST requires a green light from Congress, but states do not need federal approval to switch to permanent standard time.

LOS ANGELES — California and Nevada voters are weighing whether to repeal legal loopholes in their state constitutions that allow slavery and involuntary servitude to be used as criminal punishment. California and Nevada would join a growing national trend that started with voters in Colorado repealing involuntary servitude in 2018. Slavery and involuntary servitude were banned nationally by the 13th Amendment with one exception — as punishment for a crime. In 2016, Shawna Lynn Jones became the first incarcerated woman to die while fighting a fire in California, according to the state corrections department.
