CNN —Australian teenage sprinting sensation Gout Gout recorded the fourth-fastest under-18 100m time in history on Friday, clocking in at 10.04 seconds at the All-Schools Athletics Championships in Queensland. The run, which came in the heats but was wind-assisted and therefore does not count in official records, was also the fourth-fastest ever by an Australian sprinter of any age. The fastest ever under-18 time was set by US sprinter Erriyon Knighton in 2021, a wind-assisted 9.99 seconds. Later on Friday, once the tailwind had dropped, Gout ran a legal 10.17 in the final – the sixth-fastest legal under-18 time – to beat his personal best of 10.29 and the previous Australian under-18 record of 10.27 held by Sebastian Sultana. The National Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning after a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California on Thursday. Nearly 5 million people are under that warning from Davenport, California, up to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon, the agency said. Long said the reason for that delay — between the earthquake and potential tsunami impacts — is because earthquake waves travel faster. A tsunami wave “in the open ocean tends to travel about as fast as a jet plane flies, whereas earthquake waves travel much faster,” she said. That delay means it is easier for experts to issue tsunami warnings, Long said.

He hopes to create an army of insect-machine search and rescue workers. Researchers in Australia are fusing control backpacks onto beetles and cockroaches to direct their movements. Fitzgerald says cyborg search and rescue beetles or cockroaches might be able to help in disaster situations by finding and reporting the location of survivors and delivering lifesaving drugs to them before human rescuers can get there. Fitzgerald says that although the work might seem futuristic now, in a few decades, cyborg insects could be saving lives. University of Queensland student Lachlan Fitzgerald hopes to one day use the insect-machine hybrids as search and rescue workers.

The Mexican government plans to impose a $42 immigration fee for each passenger on a cruise ship that docks in the country. Passengers would “apparently be charged the $42 fee” whether they disembark or stay on the ship, the Associated Press has previously reported. When added to a $5 per passenger fee imposed by local states, it would make Mexican destinations among the most expensive in the world, according to the Mexican Association of Naval Agents (AMANAC). It warns the Mexican cruise industry would be less competitive with other Caribbean destinations that would be less expensive to visit. He says that some cruise lines might skip Mexican ports in protest, but he thinks most will include the fee in the price of future trips.

Other judges have reversed retirement plans after electionsA handful of judges in recent years have also reversed retirement plans when they have not been able to secure a preferred successor, including US District Judge Karen Caldwell, a judge who sits in McConnell’s home state. Cogburn and Marbley are also not the first judges to back off retirement plans after an election. As McConnell himself highlighted, a district judge did the same about-face after President George W. Bush’s reelection in 2004, and another changed his retirement plans when Obama won in 2008. CNN’s messages seeking comment from the two judges submitted with the judges’ courts were not returned. But, Wheeler said that McConnell “may be having the effect he wants” if the two appellate judges are “wavering” about whether to keep to their retirement plans.

Macron was speaking one day after Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted by lawmakers in a no-confidence vote. He had harsh words for the far-right National Rally, whose leader, Marine Le Pen, has orchestrated opposition against Macron and has vowed to frustrate his agenda. “Let’s be honest, they think about one thing: the presidential election,” Macron said of Le Pen’s party, claiming their “cynical” approach had brought “a sense of chaos” to the country. Even though no Republicans voted for the bill, close to 80% of announced clean energy investments are in Republican districts. “It’s a much more targeted and much more urgent effort,” said one clean energy industry insider. But while rival European horologists vaunt the traditions of their centuries-old workshops, design duo Toledano & Chan’s new creation has a longer history altogether: It was carved from a meteorite that slammed into Earth around 1 million years ago. The Brutalist-inspired watch, dubbed the B/1M, was made from part of the Muonionalusta meteorite, the remains of which were first discovered in the Swedish village of Kitkiöjärvi in 1906. Since then, dozens more fragments — scattered around by the force of its collision with Earth — have been found across northern Scandinavia. “You often see meteorite dials; they are not uncommon on watches,” Toledano told CNN via Zoom from New York, where he is based. A slice of the Muonionalusta meteorite (not the fragment used in the watch) shows the material's distinctive structure, known as Widmanstätten patterns.

The result is that even the EPA’s alarming estimates of cancer risk vastly underestimate — by as much as fourfold — the chances of formaldehyde causing cancer. But four former government scientists with experience doing statistical analyses of health harms told ProPublica that the myeloid leukemia risk calculation was sound. The agency’s sprawling assessment shows that, among scores of individual air pollutants, formaldehyde poses the greatest cancer risk — by far. As the EPA admits, its cancer risk calculation fails to reflect the chances of developing myeloid leukemia. Nationwide, that’s the average lifetime cancer risk from air pollution; formaldehyde accounts for most of it.
