They are among the swelling ranks of older people who are homeless in New York City. According to a report released on Thursday, the number of single adults ages 65 and older in the city’s main shelter system more than doubled from 2014 to 2022, growing nearly three times as quickly as the number of younger single adults in shelters.

New York CNN —New York City officials have agreed to restore more than $111 million in funding to libraries and cultural institutions, the City Council announced Thursday. “We are proud to announce a full restoration of funds to both our libraries and cultural institutions in the upcoming budget,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a statement Thursday. Crypto firm Consensys has been added to the SEC's list of targets, as the regulator continues its industrywide crackdown. "Consensys violated the federal securities laws by failing to register as a broker and failing to register the offer and sale of certain securities," the court filing alleges. In April, Consensys, which provides blockchain software, tried to preempt the SEC's action with its own lawsuit, alleging overreach on the part of the regulator. The 10-year-old company said its suit followed three subpoenas issued last year, plus a Wells notice from the SEC that claimed Consensys was violating federal securities laws. Consensys said in an emailed statement Friday that the action is part of an "anti-crypto agenda" at the SEC.

Many merchants and trade groups including the National Retail Federation opposed the accord, saying card fees would remain too high, while Visa and Mastercard would retain too much control over card transactions. Elected officials who prefer not to discuss the fact that New York City has one of the most segregated school systems in the United States could soon have no choice. At the same time, in Brooklyn, a public school district that covers both poor and affluent neighborhoods has shown it is possible to integrate schools — without rancor or a mass exodus of white families — when parents and school officials value integration as a benefit in itself. As my colleague Troy Closson explained last week, the remaking of Brooklyn’s District 15 began several years ago, when parents expressed a desire to integrate middle schools that were among the most homogeneous in the city. Schools adopted targets to admit certain numbers of disadvantaged children.” Middle schools set aside seats for students who were from low-income families, living in temporary housing or still learning English. In Brooklyn, a State Assembly race has attracted the involvement of marquee figures like Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, and Letitia James, the New York State attorney general. In East Harlem, race and ethnicity have cast shadows over another contest, with the question of whether the neighborhood should be represented by a Latino. And in Westchester County, a Democratic primary fight has included ugly accusations of lies, betrayal and purloined emails. If there was any illusion that Democrats in New York would play nice until November’s all-important general election, these contests for the Assembly in Tuesday’s primaries suggest otherwise.
