Read previewFrench authorities charged Telegram CEO Pavel Durov with six crimes on Wednesday related to allegations that the tech leader allowed illegal activity to proliferate on his platform. Durov's arrest raises questions about free speech and content moderation. Telegram called Durov's arrest "absurd" and said that the company is "awaiting a prompt resolution" of the situation. Durov's arrest has received backlash from free-speech absolutists like Elon Musk — although his track record for allowing speech on X has also come into question. AdvertisementMusk, who has been criticized for the lack of content moderation on his platform X, defended Durov and painted the Telegram CEO's arrest as a broader global threat around free speech.

Jim doesn't see a need to step in first thing Thursday morning and buy the dip. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Quarterly commentary During Nvidia's fiscal second quarter, better-than-expected sales were driven by strength in all key segments, including a Data Center segment revenue record. Regarding China, Kress said, "Data Center revenue in China grew sequentially in Q2 and is a significant contributor to our Data Center revenue. Guidance Taking a closer look at guidance, Nvidia's fiscal third quarter may not have beaten the Street's estimates by the magnitude some were hoping for, but it's far from disappointing.

While it might seem like humans and animals consume most of the world's water, heavy industry uses up to half of it. That's why business sectors are looking for new ways to recycle water, especially in the face of increased drought. The global water and wastewater treatment market is expected to reach half a trillion dollars by the end of this decade, according to Statista. "Other technologies can recover maybe 50 to 60% of water, but we can recover 99% of water," Govindan said. After traveling to all 50 US states, I've been to my fair share of major cities. Although I've loved a handful of the cities, there are some I don't plan on visiting again. I've visited all 50 states and have spent my fair share of time in nearly every major city in the United States. — A Massachusetts judge has declined to dismiss two charges, including murder, in the case of Karen Read, who is blamed in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend. Read is accused of ramming into John O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him for dead in a January 2022 snowstorm. Her two-month trial ended in July when jurors declared they were hopelessly deadlocked and a judge declared a mistrial on the fifth day of deliberations. Judge Beverly Cannone’s decision, released on Friday, means the case can move forward to a new trial set to begin Jan. 27. She could poll the jury, Weinberg said, on whether they reached a verdict on the three counts or bring in the four jurors to be questioned anonymously.

The phrase "financially comfortable" doesn't have a strict definition. In San Francisco, the net worth you'd need to feel "comfortable" is $1.5 million, according to a survey sample of 750 residents in that city — the highest amount cited among 12 major U.S. cities surveyed. Much of the difference in net worth thresholds between cities is due to shelter costs, especially in cities with severe housing shortages, like San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City. While feeling "financially comfortable" is a subjective term, the survey makes a distinction between that and feeling "wealthy." For cities, it ranges from $4.4 million in San Francisco to $2.2 million in Dallas.

CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays will resume a June 26 game that was suspended for rain in what will be the first game of a doubleheader on Monday. Back in June, Jansen, then playing for the Blue Jays, was at the plate with one out and one on in the top of the second when the game was suspended. “I don’t even know how this works,” Jansen said when asked about the suspended game after he’d been traded to Boston. The Blue Jays will have some funky developments in the game, too. Though the suspended game will end on Aug. 26, it will be officially recorded as having taken place on June 26 in the record books.

Five people have developed Legionnaires' disease following possible exposure to contaminated water droplets from a cooling tower in downtown Lincoln, New Hampshire, state health officials say. Testing by the DHHS and the state Department of Environmental Services confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria contaminating the cooling tower. Four of the five people diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease were initially hospitalized and later discharged. “RiverWalk is partnering with DHHS to address the contamination, with additional test results for the cooling tower expected next week,” the release said. However, it can cause a more serious pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease, “which can be fatal if left untreated,” the release said.

A study on long Covid fails to bring researchers closer to finding a diagnostic test. Why there’s no test yet for long CovidAn estimated 17 million people have long Covid, but identifying people with the condition still can't be achieved with one diagnostic test, researchers said this week. So “clinicians are left to continue doing what we have done in the past,” which is to rule out other potential health conditions rather than diagnosing long Covid, they said. The study is part of the National Institute of Health’s RECOVER Initiative, a billion-dollar-plus effort launched in 2021 to research causes and treatments of long Covid. The Freedom Caucus added that in the event of a stopgap bill, funding should be “extended into early 2025” to avoid passing a funding bill that “preserves Democrat spending.” Both demands would spark a standoff with Democratic lawmakers.
