NEW YORK (AP) — The Biden Administration is easing its restrictions on banking giant Wells Fargo, saying the bank has sufficiently fixed its toxic culture after years of scandals. Millions of unauthorized accounts were opened, severely tarnishing the reputation of Wells Fargo, once among the most sterling in banking. The decision is a major victory for Wells' management and Charles Scharf, who took over as CEO in 2019. There remains in place a Federal Reserve consent order against Wells as well as a requirement by the Fed that Wells grow no bigger than its current size until it fixed its sales culture. The Fed did not immediately respond to comment, but the OCC's decision is likely to pressure the Fed to make its own decision regarding its restrictions on Wells.

CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested “an agreement can be reached” with the United States to release detained American journalist Evan Gershkovich, as he brought up the conviction of a “patriotic” Russian hitman in Germany. Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was arrested last March while on a reporting trip in the country. When Putin said Gershkovich was working with US special services, Carlson did push the Russian president, saying: “This guy is obviously not a spy, he’s a kid. In fact, journalists have repeatedly been requesting interviews with Putin, but the Russian President had declined to grant access. The Russian President suggested that the path to ending the war in Ukraine was through direct negotiations between Washington and Moscow.

The concept behind "Mixers" is to offer creators and brands the ability to train their own AI models. Around the same time, another survey found that over half of creators had been asked to use AI by brands.

For the year, UBS took in $77 billion in new assets across its wealth-management and personal and corporate banking segments. The Congressional Budget Office in 2022 estimated that the tens of billions of new IRS funding provided by the IRA would increase revenues by $180.4 billion from 2022 to 2031. The IRS now says that if IRA funding is restored, renewed and diversified, estimated revenues could reach as much as $851 billion from 2024 to 2034. However, House Republicans built a $1.4 billion reduction to the IRS into the debt ceiling and budget cuts package passed by Congress last summer. IRA funding "is enabling the IRS to reverse this trend,” Leiserson said. The tax gap — which is the difference between taxes owed and taxes paid — has grown to more than $600 billion annually, according to the IRS.

And there’s a good chance that all three legal dramas see major movement next week. New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking a staggering $370 million penalty from Trump. Trump is already siphoning a portion of his political donations to pay legal fees associated with the 91 criminal charges filed against him in four indictments. In 2023 alone, The New York Times reported , Trump spent roughly $50 million in donor money on legal bills and investigation-related expenses. The results will either buttress Trump's claims of massive wealth or expose him as a poseur. The biggest potential judgment comes in the civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The court has already determined that Trump committed fraud by securing loans through false financial statements – including inflating the value of his properties. The fraud case is more complicated, experts say, since there was no clear victim identified. Judge Arthur Engoron, who will deliver the judgment on financial damages as well as the fate of Trump's businesses in New York, hasn't been sympathetic to the idea that Trump's fraud caused no harm.

The executives in charge never seem to pay a price for the pain they cause, and here are several reasons why. AdvertisementFor these companies, cutting 10,000 employees saves them in the neighborhood of a billion dollars a year in costs. More importantly, boards see handcuffing the executive to the stock price roller coaster as a good thing. If they take action that increases the company's value and its stock price, everyone wins. The difference then is the stock package and the stock price — just what the boards of these companies want.

While demand for artificial intelligence applications is seeing rapid growth, several non-tech companies are well-positioned to benefit directly from the AI boom over the next few years, according to Scotiabank. This is because although GPUs, the specialized chips that power AI applications, are more efficient, they consume more than twice as much electricity to operate compared to non-AI chips such as CPUs. The Scotiabank analysts named six stocks that they think are well-positioned to capitalize on surging demand for data centers and renewable energy from AI applications. Meanwhile, earlier this week, fellow data center firm Equinix launched a new cloud service that will allow companies to manage their Nvidia AI supercomputing infrastructure to build AI applications. Due to their massive, power-hungry data centers, Scotiabank noted that the tech companies are the largest corporate consumers of renewable power.

In the US, romance scams resulting from catfishing have among the highest reported financial losses of internet crimes as a whole. A 2019 study found that young LGBTQ+ men in rural America experiencing catfishing on dating apps felt angry and fearful. She also emphasized the need to recognize today’s loneliness epidemic, which “leads people to perhaps be more susceptible to catfishing scams,” she said. “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” Ryan Gosling said. Her first three films as a solo director — “Lady Bird,”“Little Women” and “Barbie” — have all been nominated for best picture. One likely factor: the increasingly international composition of the film academy. After Ben Affleck went unnominated for directing 2012's “Argo,” voters rallied around his movie, ultimately handing Affleck the Oscar for best picture. Whether the same effect could follow “Barbie" will be one of the biggest questions leading up the Academy Awards.

Musk appeared to give Tesla's board an ultimatum on Monday, saying he wants 25% voting control at Tesla or he'll stop growing AI development at the electric-car maker. One way of getting that would be via a dual-class stock structure.
