[1/2] Workers lift a solar panel onto a roof during a residential solar installation in Scripps Ranch, San Diego, California, U.S. October 14, 2016. "This historic boost in solar investments will advance millions of residential solar projects nationwide, protect people and the planet, deliver environmental justice," said EPA Administrator Michael Regan. Regan announced the launch of the "Solar for All" grant program in Vermont, where he joined Independent Senator Bernie Sanders to tour a residential solar project. The awards will help communities develop low-income solar programs that will provide financing and technical assistance like workforce development and ensure that low-income households receive the benefits of rooftop solar, including household savings, community ownership and energy resiliency. The program will guarantee a minimum 20% total electricity bill savings for households.

When Melinda Katz ran for Queens district attorney in 2019, her principal opponent in the Democratic primary was a public defender and democratic socialist with a platform of ending cash bail and eventually abolishing the police. With endorsements from progressive prosecutors around the country — as well as from Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — Tiffany Cabán, a first-time candidate, lost by fewer than 60 votes after painting Ms. Katz as a regressive Democrat. Four years later, the strongest challenge to Ms. Katz is coming from George Grasso, an opponent running to her right who has accused her of being soft on crime. It’s not the only contest in the city where moderate Democrats are facing opponents on the right in primaries on Tuesday. In several City Council races, from the Bronx to southern Brooklyn, moderate Democrats are being challenged over public safety, affordable housing and education by more conservative members of their own party.

The $9.2 billion low-cost government loan for the BlueOval SK joint venture is the biggest ever from the government auto lending program that will help finance construction of three plants in Kentucky and Tennessee. The joint venture is building battery plants in Kentucky and Tennessee. The UAW and Senator Bernie Sanders in April criticized a General Motors (GM.N)/LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) joint venture battery plant for paying workers much less than GM assembly plant employees even though it benefits from hefty U.S. government tax credits. Union workers at a nearby Ohio GM assembly plant that closed in 2019 made at least $32 an hour. The Energy Department last year awarded $2.5 billion to help finance construction of Ultium's new lithium-ion battery plants, including Warren, from the same program used for the Ford loan.

What you’ve got to do to get more money from wealth is just let your money go out there and make money on its own. darrick hamiltonYeah, the extent to which our tax code incentivizes wealth and capital growth, it centers on existing wealth and capital growth. $50,000 to the most wealth-poor person seems like a big number, but we need to put that number in context. Biden said he discussed human rights and other democratic values with Modi during their talks in the White House. In reports on human rights and religious freedom, the State Department raised concerns over treatment of Muslims, Hindu Dalits, Christians and other religious minorities in India while also listing a crackdown on journalists. India has become a black-hole for religious minorities," said protester Raqib Hameed Naik, the founder of Hindutva Watch, a group that monitors reports of attacks on Indian minorities. Senator Bernie Sanders said Modi's "aggressive Hindu nationalism" has "left little space for India's religious minorities." The U.N. human rights office described a 2019 citizenship law as "fundamentally discriminatory" for excluding Muslim migrants.

WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) - Rights advocates in Washington demanded that President Joe Biden publicly call out what they described as India's deteriorating human rights record, saying the U.S. approach of raising the issue in private with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a failure. In a press briefing on Wednesday, activists and academics also called for hearings in the U.S. Congress about human rights in India under the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Modi, who is on a four-day visit to the United States. Critics of the Modi government's human rights record have cited less press freedom, restrictions on minority religious rights and other forms of discrimination and backsliding on democratic rights. The White House may bring up human rights concerns but it said that Biden will not "lecture" Modi on the issue. CNN —Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday launched a Senate investigation into working and safety conditions at Amazon warehouses, adding to federal scrutiny on the labor practices of one of the country’s largest employers. In 2018, following heavy criticism from Sanders, Amazon announced it was raising its minimum wage for US employees to $15 an hour. In his letter Tuesday, Sanders argued that Amazon warehouses “are uniquely dangerous,” and cited recent citations from the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration against Amazon. After inspecting three Amazon warehouse facilities, OSHA issued hazard letters in January related to injury risks from workers lifting packages. An Amazon spokesperson at the time said the company “strongly” disagrees with OSHA’s claims and intends to appeal.

Amazon's warehouse working conditions, which have come under increased scrutiny in recent years, are now at the heart of a congressional probe that's being led by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Steve Kelly, an Amazon spokesperson, told CNBC in a statement that the company has received Sanders' letter and is in the early stages of reviewing it. The HELP committee posted a form on its website seeking testimonials from current and former Amazon employees about their experiences at the company. Amazon faces ongoing federal probes into its safety record beyond the Senate's actions. Amazon says it's made progress on reducing injuries across its U.S. operations, and continues to invest in safety initiatives, projects and programs.

June 13 (Reuters) - General Motors (GM.N) and Samsung SDI (006400.KS) will build a more than $3 billion EV battery cell plant in Indiana scheduled to begin operations in 2026, creating 1,700 jobs, the state's governor said Tuesday. The companies said in April they would invest more than $3 billion to build a joint venture EV battery manufacturing plant in the U.S. but did not name a location. Reuters reported in January that GM had opted not to move forward with building a fourth U.S. battery plant with LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) in Indiana, but said GM could still pick Indiana for a battery plant with another partner. The joint GM and Samsung SDI plant near New Carlisle, Indiana aims to have an annual production capacity of 30 gigawatt hours (GWh). The companies are building a $2.6 billion plant in Michigan, set to open in 2024 after opening a plant in Ohio and are building another in Tennessee.

Sen. Bernie Sanders vowed to oppose President Joe Biden's pick to lead the National Institutes of Health – and any other health nominee – until the administration delivers a plan to lower prescription drug prices. Sanders, who chairs the Senate Health Committee, controls when his panel reviews nominees for the Department of Health and Human Services. A provision of the act penalizes drugmakers for charging prices that rise faster than inflation for people on Medicare. Lawmakers, researchers and advocates have repeatedly warned that drug prices in the U.S. outpace those in other nations and ultimately harm Americans who need to access lifesaving treatments. One of the top demands is a four-day workweek, according to the KPMG Talent Survey of 1,035 US adults, conducted from mid-April to May 1. According to participants, 82% of employees would be interested in a 10-hour, four-day workweek, and nearly half (47%) see it as highly appealing. "Having a four-day workweek, even if you're working longer days during those four days, enables you to have the flexibility of three days off without work. Agarwal wrote, "as productivity tools with artificial intelligence catch on and more high-ranking executives acknowledge the importance of rest, the four-day workweek could become more commonplace." Besides four-day workweeks, employees also showed when it comes to perks at work, millennials are more likely to care about perks than other generations.

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday called on the U.S. Health and Human Services Department to take action to ensure seniors can actually afford the expensive Alzheimer's treatment Leqembi. Sanders, who chairs the Senate Health Committee, in a letter to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra called the $26,500 annual price tag for Leqembi set by drugmakers Eisai and Biogen "unconscionable." Sanders said the "outrageously high price" of Leqembi "will prevent seniors who need this drug from receiving treatment." Most Medicare patients suffering from Alzheimer's would not be able to afford the 20% co-payment of more than $5,000 a year for Leqembi, Sanders said. Co-payments, along with coinsurance and deductibles, are medication and health services costs that patients must personally pay for out of pocket, as opposed to being covered by their health insurance.

The next 30 minutes of DeSantis’ speech then demonstrated how Biden might survive despite all the doubts about his performance and capabilities. In that way, DeSantis’ first swing through Iowa showed why Republicans are still at risk in 2024 from a key dynamic that dashed their hopes of a sweeping “red wave” in 2022. Many strategists in both parties believe that dynamic is most likely to recur in 2024 if the GOP nominates Trump. One reason, Republicans argue, is that the eventual nominee likely will talk about these issues less in a general election. Beset by all the difficult domestic conditions DeSantis highlighted, Biden will likely struggle straight through November 2024 to affirmatively convince a majority that his performance deserves another term.

Cornel West, the progressive activist and professor, announced a presidential campaign on Monday with the People’s Party, a third party led by a former campaign staff member for Senator Bernie Sanders. “I enter in the quest for truth, I enter in the quest for justice, and the presidency is just one vehicle to pursue that truth and justice — what I’ve been trying to do all of my life,” Dr. West said in a campaign video posted on Twitter. In the video, Dr. West said he had decided to run as a third-party candidate because “neither political party wants to tell the truth about Wall Street, about Ukraine, about the Pentagon, about Big Tech.” He called former President Donald J. Federal funding helped keep more than 200,000 childcare providers afloat in recent years. Unless Congress acts, many parents could face even higher childcare costs. During the pandemic, Congress provided over $52 billion to states to support the childcare system, which helped 220,000 childcare providers stay afloat, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. "The American Rescue Plan provided critical funding that made child care available to millions of children and allowed child care programs throughout our country to stay open. Many Democratic lawmakers are unhappy with the debt-ceiling bill that just passed the House. But some of them will vote for the bill anyway because they say a default would be far worse. "The macro alternative is absolutely indigestible," Rep. Jamie Raskin told Politico. On Wednesday night, the House easily passed Biden and McCarthy's Fiscal Responsibility Act with a bipartisan vote of 314-117. Other Democrats feel the same — but fear a default on the nation's debt would be worse than signing the bipartisan debt-ceiling bill into law.

The Senate made surprising progress Thursday night on the debt ceiling bill, passing it 63 to 36. The bill now heads to President Joe Biden's desk, where it will be signed into law. Leading up to the votes, a number of Democratic senators were unhappy with a range of provisions in the bill. And while other Democratic lawmakers agreed with Sanders' points, they felt a default on the nations' debt would be worse than passing the bill. Now the legislation heads to Biden's desk, where he will sign the bill into law to suspend the debt ceiling through January 2025.

WASHINGTON, May 31 (Reuters) - A divided U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to suspend the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling on Wednesday, with majority support from both Democrats and Republicans to overcome opposition led by hardline conservatives and avoid a catastrophic default. The measure, a compromise between Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, drew opposition from 71 hardline Republicans. Progressive Democrats - who along with Biden had resisted negotiating over the debt ceiling - oppose the bill for a few reasons, including new work requirements from some federal anti-poverty programs. Senator Bernie Sanders, a progressive independent who caucuses with the Democrats, said he would oppose the bill due to inclusion of an energy pipeline and extra work requirements. The debt-ceiling standoff prompted ratings agencies to warn that they might downgrade U.S. debt, which underpins the global financial system.

The debt deal clears the HouseThe debt-ceiling deal is a step closer to becoming law after its breezy passage in the House last night, making the prospect of a U.S. default all the more remote. Investors expressed relief, sending global markets and U.S. stock futures higher this morning. The bill now heads to a final vote in the Democratic-controlled Senate. The House vote was always seen as riskier, but the bill’s passage in the upper house is by no means a fait accompli. And some fiscal hawks in his party see the deal as a betrayal.

DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union appears ready to take a hard line when it comes to national negotiations this year with the Detroit automakers, warning of strikes or work stoppages, if needed. UAW President Shawn Fain said the "union will not accept any concessions" from General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis – a lofty mission in such negotiations. Contract talks between the union and automakers usually begin in earnest in July ahead of mid-September expirations of the previous four-year agreements. Union leaders, led by Fain, are largely newly elected officers that ran on platforms of standing up to companies and reforming the organization following a years-long federal corruption scandal that partially involved prior negotiations.
