“Oppenheimer” continued its explosive awards campaign at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night, earning eight top trophies including best picture, best director for Christopher Nolan and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr.That caps a hot week for the period drama, which also dominated last Sunday’s Golden Globes and has since picked up key nominations from the actors, producers and directors guilds. If it wasn’t already clear, we’ve got a formidable Oscar front-runner on our hands. An appreciative Nolan used his speech to thank “all the critics who helped with convincing mainstream audiences that a film about quantum physics and apocalypse could be worth their time.”Though “Oppenheimer” won in the biggest categories at the Critics Choice Awards, it was the film’s box office frenemy, “Barbie,” that entered the night as the most nominated movie, with a record-breaking 18 citations. Greta Gerwig’s hit comedy managed six wins, including trophies for its costumes, production design and song (“I’m Just Ken”), but since most of those awards were announced in the margins before a commercial break, host Chelsea Handler “went rogue” near the end of the show and brought up Gerwig and star Margot Robbie to make a speech anyway.

CNN —Hollywood films of diverse genres have one point in common — they’re all about the most important person in the universe. That most important person could be an amnesiac assassin fighting a mysterious government conspiracy, or some guy (or girl) seeking true love. They are the main character; everyone else is secondary. The goal of life is success and self-actualization as the main character of your own dream. I saw hundreds of new films with a variety of plots and styles made on every imaginable scale and budget. The movies have ostensibly been at death’s door at least since the shift to sync sound, which isn’t to undersell the industry’s business woes. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” was “cursed,” read one headline; “‘Mission: Impossible 7’ falls short of expectations,” ran another. The moaning in the trades gave way to klaxon horns when much of SAG-AFTRA went on strike on July 14. This year also reminded us that a mass audience will happily get out of the house for movies without superheroes.

Duolingo is set to take its viral TikTok marketing to the Super Bowl. The language-learning app plans to run a five-second ad during the Super Bowl game on February 11, Manu Orssaud, Duolingo's chief marketing officer, told Business Insider. It won't be a national Super Bowl ad and instead target local markets regionally. The Super Bowl ad is also set to include a digital component and be "something surprising, something that hopefully will get people talking," Orssaud said. YouTube Shorts' audience skews toward men more than TikTok, and Duolingo is creating repeatable, series-driven content specifically for YouTube Shorts, Orssaud said.
