Opinion: Destined to be a lame duck

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J. Frommer.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering an award for information about two wildfires in southern New Mexico that left two people dead, prompted the evacuation of thousands and scorched more than 24,000 acres. The agency is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the “person or persons responsible for starting the fires” near the village of Ruidoso, N.M, the agency said in a statement. asked for the public’s help in identifying what sparked the blazes. Margot Cravens, a spokeswoman for the F.B.I.’s field office in Albuquerque, declined to comment on Sunday evening but confirmed that the agency was assisting with the investigation. The South Fork and Salt fires began on June 17 amid sweltering temperatures and were still burning on Sunday evening.

When reports spread that Pope Francis had used an offensive anti-gay slur while speaking to Italian bishops at a conference last month, many Catholics were both shocked and baffled. How could a pope known for his openness to and acceptance of L.G.B.T.Q. people use homophobic slang and caution prelates about admitting gay men into seminaries? But the question, and the apparent inconsistency in Francis’ messaging, reflect the deep contradictions and tensions that underlie the Roman Catholic Church’s and Francis’ relationship to homosexuality. The church holds that “homosexual tendencies” are “intrinsically disordered.” When it comes to ordination, the church’s guidelines state that people with “deep-seated” gay tendencies should not become priests.

The Gaza War Is Dividing the L.G.B.T.Q. Community

In the upscale gay resort town of Fire Island Pines, colorful flags honor L.G.B.T.Q. history makers like the actress Wanda Sykes and the drag queen RuPaul in a small park near the harbor. For a few hours this month, one flag also honored Representative Ritchie Torres, the first openly gay Afro-Latino member of Congress. Before he put on the glittery neon yellow tasseled jumpsuit, donned the yellow wig, and lip synced and danced onstage under colorful spotlights, Paul Hidacan went through his preshow routine in a busy dressing room. “I grew up in my church,” said Mr. Hidacan, 21, who has attended service in cropped tops, skirts and boots, and started performing in drag last year. “I know there are some who raise their brows when they see me, but the pastors accept me.”In many places in the Philippines, drag is becoming more mainstream, and more popular. Drag queens are on fashion magazine covers, and are pitching name-brand products like MAC Cosmetics, Shell gasoline, Durex condoms and Samsung phones. Students of at least one public university recently held a drag competition.

I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

The same could not be said for their sprawling entertainment businesses. The three men meet occasionally to discuss the state of the industry, and lively disagreements have a been a staple of their discussions. But by the time they met on the yacht, they had all agreed that the money-losing status quo in the streaming business was unsustainable. “There was peace in the valley for a period of time,” Mr. Malone mused in a rare recent interview, recalling the days before video-streaming upended the lucrative cable business. But there’s another reason: middlemen known as pharmacy benefit managers, or P.B.M.s. But in their quest for higher profits, they are quietly driving up prescription drug costs. Your pharmacy benefit manager is often invisible to you unless you’re having trouble filling a prescription. (You probably rely on one of the big three: CVS Health’s Caremark, Cigna’s Express Scripts or UnitedHealth Group’s Optum Rx.) Today, we published a story about these companies, how they affect drug spending and how they amassed so much control with so little transparency.

Companies known as pharmacy benefit managers, or P.B.M.s, are at the center of a system that can make it extraordinarily difficult to get your medication. These companies are hired by your employer or your health insurer to manage your prescription drugs. We just published an article explaining how P.B.M.s work, and we’re continuing to report on this subject. We want to hear about your experiences — positive or negative — with these companies. Maybe they put up roadblocks that made it hard for you to get your medication.

If you’ve ever had trouble getting a prescription drug, chances are you’ve run into a pharmacy benefit manager. These companies, known as P.B.M.s, play a crucial but often hidden role in deciding which drugs you can get and how much you will personally have to pay. They are middlemen in the maddeningly complex American health care system, working on behalf of your employer or government insurance programs like Medicare, which cover most of the costs of prescription drugs. is to save money on your medications. But The New York Times found that the three biggest P.B.M.s are often making you pay more than you should.

Uncle Nate was Jewish. German war records told a different story: Nate was taken prisoner and died of his wounds at a German Airforce hospital. “Did they find Uncle Nate’s femur yet, Mom?” my daughter Naomi would ask while eating her salad. And after the match: “Have you picked Uncle Nate’s coffin yet?” Asher wants to know. Uncle Nate fought for our freedoms, and his death reminds us that freedom is never free.

And they are driving up drug costs for millions of people, employers and the government. The three largest pharmacy benefit managers, or P.B.M.s, act as middlemen overseeing prescriptions for more than 200 million Americans. They are owned by huge health care conglomerates — CVS Health, Cigna and UnitedHealth Group — and are hired by employers and governments. The job of the P.B.M.s is to reduce drug costs. Most Americans get their health insurance through a government program like Medicare or through an employer, which pay for two different types of insurance for each person.

She started researching and found numerous articles preaching the advantages of freezing eggs before age 35 for higher viability in the future. For the first time, egg freezing was an option for younger women worried about their reproductive future. But that also comes with a cost — and Carney doesn't plan to do another round. Other studies have found that there isn't much added benefit to freezing eggs earlier than 30. Fertility clinics have an obvious business case for trying to convince as many people as possible that egg freezing is something they should do.

Remains of the oldest shipwreck ever discovered in deep water, and perhaps the oldest complete wreck in any water, have been located in the Mediterranean Sea about 56 miles off the coast of northern Israel. The Israel Antiquities Authority, which announced the find on Thursday, said that preliminary examination of two clay jars known as Canaanite amphorae indicated that the merchant vessel, an estimated 39 to 46 feet long, sank sometime between 1400 B.C. and 1300 B.C., an epoch when the Egyptian empire stretched from what is now northern Syria to Sudan, and the boy pharaoh Tutankhamun briefly sat on the throne. Whether the galley was the victim of a sudden storm, a wayward wind or attempted piracy is unclear. No spectacular new finds have surfaced since then.

What to Know About Suicides in the U.S. Army

The Army’s suicide rate has risen steadily even in peacetime, and the numbers now exceed total combat deaths in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Here’s what you need to know about the Army’s suicide crisis:The size and psychological strength of the Army has declined. After the Vietnam War, the Army went through a period of recalibration, a slowing-down that allowed leaders to take stock of their troops and assess their strategies. This requires that the Army be able to deploy anywhere, at any time, for any reason. The Army’s mental-health care system is broken.

How worried you should be about H5N1, the bird flu virus spreading on dairy farms in the United States, depends on whom you are. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has described the current H5N1 risk to the general public as low. The risk that the virus poses is tempered by the fact that it doesn’t spread easily among people — yet. Right now public-health experts have the difficult task of urging authorities who can do something about H5N1 to take action, while maintaining public trust. Experts need to be clear that currently, the levers of action are squarely in the hands of government leaders and agricultural interests, not in the hands of the general public.

Obama enacted DACA; Trump tried to end itThe DACA policy was enacted after bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform efforts failed for the umpteenth time. Nearly 600,000 people have sought protected status under the program, which defers but does not necessarily end any immigration action against them. The Trump administration tried to end the DACA program in 2017, but the effort eventually failed at the Supreme Court in 2020. Instead, Trump hit pause on new applications, something the Biden administration then reversed. The much more modest bipartisan effort pushed by Biden earlier this year would not have helped the undocumented spouses of citizens and their children.

“Is this a political war to the knife?”I was not familiar with that term – “war to the knife” – but Bannon also recently used it in an interview with ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Ousted from White House role in 2017Bannon’s tenure in Trump’s White House was relatively short; he was fired in August 2017, part of a major reorganization under then-chief of staff John Kelly, who was brought in to control a chaotic atmosphere. As chief strategist at the White House, Bannon was known for large whiteboards full of lists of priorities – things that still ring true in the priorities he outlined over the weekend. Courts, Congress and mismanagement kept Bannon and Trump from achieving many of these goals in Trump’s first term. Read previewDonald Trump's former White House national security advisor is arguing that a second term in office should involve restarting US nuclear testing for the first time in over 30 years. No one wins a nuclear arms race, he said. Kimball called out the difference between O'Brien's argument for the resumption of nuclear testing with the Biden administration's current policy, which remains dedicated to the status quo. "Resuming nuclear testing would reduce US technical superiority over Russia and China because they would immediately follow and have much more to learn," he said. O'Brien's push for resumed testing shouldn't necessarily come as a surprise.
