Northwest Atlantic porbeagle sharks are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. The team pieced together several factors that indicated the shark had been eaten and the tag excreted by a larger predator that gobbled up the shark, Anderson said. Unusual suspectsPorbeagles belong to a family called lamnid sharks, which also includes great white sharks and mako sharks. Fast fashion retailer Shein found two cases of child labor at its suppliers last year, it said in its 2023 sustainability report, as it stepped up audits of manufacturers in China to assuage criticisms of its low-cost business model ahead of a planned flotation. Shein tightened its supplier policy last October after the child labor cases were found, so that any severe breaches — called “Immediate Termination Violations” — would result in ending the relationship with the supplier immediately. Previously, suppliers such as those that employed minors had 30 days to resolve the issue, failing which Shein would cut ties. That violation was found in 1.8% of supplier audits in 2021, 0.3% of audits in 2022, and 0.1% in 2023. “We remain vigilant in guarding against such violations going forward, and in line with current policies, will terminate any noncompliant suppliers,” Shein said in the report.

Tropical Storm Ernesto, which formed Monday as the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is swirling toward the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. The Atlantic front quickly developed into a tropical storm over the course of the day, as parts of the East Coast are still reeling from the havoc of Hurricane Debby. Ernesto is forecast to strengthen over the next few days and could reach hurricane strength by Thursday. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a 90% chance of an above-normal number of storms by the time the hurricane season concludes in November. Part of the reason for that above-normal activity includes near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic.

CNN —Tropical Storm Ernesto is slamming the northern Caribbean with heavy rain, gusty winds and rough seas Tuesday as it sets up to take a swipe at Puerto Rico. Satellite imagery captures Tropical Storm Ernesto churning over the northeastern Caribbean as the sun rises Tuesday morning. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands, including the US and British Virgin Islands. Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches will be widespread, with up to 10 inches possible in parts of Puerto Rico. Flash flooding and mudslides are possible as a result, especially in the higher terrain areas of eastern and southern Puerto Rico.
